Lounge of Justice - Part 90

So I just read the script for Villeneuve's Dune and quite frankly I think it will flop and would have flopped even without Covid. Dune fans will love it (me included) because it is very close to the (first half of the) book but it doesn't quite work as a movie. Tons of exposition but little payoff. And it's relatively light on action. Again, this is a good adaptation of the source material but I don't think it'll work for the GA.

So basically like most Denis Villeneuve films so far...critically well-received but considered a disappointment at the box office. I enjoy his films though so I'll be contributing to the small B.O. numbers.

Villeneuve definitely put this script together hoping he would get to make the second one. He includes stuff that would only become relevant in part 2 and even teases events in the later books. But if you're going into this expecting any sort of closure then you're **** out of luck. I foresee people walking out of the theater (if theaters still exist lol) going "what was that all about?".

Is the ending of the first movie going
to be Paul's meeting with the Fremen & Chani along with hints for sequel?

Villeneuve films are basically detail challenging for average audience. It's (Dune) not going to do gang buster at the box office mainly because Herbert's novel contain very little actions and long on concepts.

Been watching a few old sci-fi classic, I was again remined about Fritz Lang's 1927 Metropolis influences on modern sci-fi cinema, most especially Ridley Scott's 1982 Blade Runner.

This is great -

Dune is one of those properties where I'm honestly not sure how you can market it as a general market movie for mainstream audiences. I'm amazed (in a good way) Villeneueve got a huge budget to do this.

A few episodes into ''Queens Gambit''.

Anya Taylor Joy can make chess seem exciting.

Yup. I think Villeneuve should've only signed up if Part II was a guarantee shoot back to back. Only way that sequel will happen imo. I also can't blame him, dude is legit a fan of the books.

Depp just lost his libel claim. No justice here.

Edit: The Sun now saying Depp beat Heard 12 times. WTF? I don't believe this for a second. Depp's career is now officially dead though.

The Sun is a tabloid last time I checked.

i feel ashamed that i have not yet watched metropolis.
No worry - you still have time. Just make sure that you watch 'The Complete Metropolis (2010)' version with a run-time of 2.5 hrs. Also as flickchick85 mentioned, Lang's 'M (1931)' and 'The Testament of Dr Mabuse (1933)' are worth a look especially in term of cinematic influences.

While we're on the subject of German Expressionist cinema, check out 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)'.

There is no concern. There is a conspiracy theory that WB came up with the music claim to soften the blow, but that makes no sense. Like any. If they were secretly planning to stealth cancel the movie there'd be no need to make the music excuse since they'd eventually have to address the lack of movie down the line anyway.:funny:
