The annoying part about the name for me is that it made me think Cinemax content would be included as well (their app is already called "Max Go" and they generally use "Max" for all their Cinemax branding), since HBO owns Cinemax, but that's apparently not the case.

The name is the one thing for me. I just don’t get why they went with it. It’s fine in the grand scheme, but it’s a bizarre choice to me.

Yeah, that's why all the moaning about the price is kind of hilarious to me. Because literally no one already paying for HBO in any form is gonna have to shell out any more money for this. Not cable subscribers, or cord-cutters like myself paying for it separately. You're just about to get a lot more bang for your buck.


...until they inevitably raise the price after a year or two, of course.

I'm just going to assume that most Supe fans don't want ''real world'' type situations in future films or even on the spinoff tv show. I mean, A superman around when there are kids in holding jails, rise of racism in certain states/cities, not to mention the now weekly shootings in america etc.

I guess its best to stay in the 'fantastical' type setting and go up against other type of villains. Tis' where the escapism comes in and whatnot, but I at least kinda admire that Snyder tried to do both, even if he struck out.

the medium is so huge these days that they can do that kind of stuff with a show like watchmen. And who's to say superman still can't tackle real world issues? they just need to bring in a filmmaker who has a much more creatively consistent track record. Sometimes someone's best just ain't what everyone else wants. It happens.

I always thought some of the stuff in Grant Morrison's Action Comics would've made for a dope "socially relevant" Superman adaptation someday.

There'd always be some segment of people who complain, but if done right you've got a lot to work with in a Superman taking on Wall Street and political corruption.

That, and either way, it's additional content. Even if you were paying $15/month for the additional content, if you watched four weekly shows, you'd be paying like 94 cents per episode. That doesn't seem excessive. Given the amount of content available, I think there's potentially quite a lot of bang for the buck there.

In a way at least they're up front about it. This whole venture is gonna be mad expensive, even by the standards of streaming we've already seen. Disney and Apple starting with super cheap prices (before they inevitably raise them down the line) is something they can afford to do since they're giant powerhouses right now. AT&T is big, but I don't think their entertainment division is gonna have the war chest Disney or Apple do for this.

Even with HBO Max being more expensive than Disney+ or Apple TV, they flat out said they don't expect it to turn a profit until a few years in.

Disney and Apple don't have half the content AT&T does. Disney is also limiting their stuff to "family friendly". Being cheaper than HBO max makes sense

HBO Warner would be a good combo.

The thing is though, how many people know that HBO and Warners would be connected. If it's going to be some extended Warners library, including what's on HBO, then they have to let the GA know what this is about. Every time I saw HBO Max, I just assumed it was some variation of HBO Go or whatever it's called.

When I see Disney+, I have a much clearer understanding of what that is. Disney is seen as a company with a lot of varied content whereas the average person just sees HBO as a cable channel.

What's funny is Superman was initially created as a fantasy response to real world stuff-- wife beaters, white collar criminals, dictators, etc.

Don't they? I'm not sure about the sheer numbers, but I think Disney definitely has the bigger IP to work with by sheer virtue of all the stuff they own now. Especially with the Fox merger and getting access to all those assets.

Other than DC and the really big HBO stuff like Game of Thrones, I'm kind of surprised WB didn't do anything Harry Potter related for HBO Max, especially since that's one of their biggest IPs.

I'd pay top dollar to see Superman crash land on a would be child predator or wife beater, etc and intimidate the entire living **** out of them and put them in their place and threaten them to the core of their living being. That's when Superman is at his best: fighting for people who can't fight for themselves. Champion of the oppressed. Superman is the ultimate big brother. WB should use him that way.
