Lounge of Justice - Part 90

That's the thing. Calling Covid "the China virus" is all about racism.

While it's not my place to tell anyone what to be or not to be offended by, I always saw this as describing the virus by merely using the name of the country it originated from. Had it originated from Athens and he called it "the Greek virus" instead, I don't believe I would've felt discriminated by it. Then there's the Spanish flu that is estimated to have killed close to 50M people. 100 years later it's still called "Spanish flu". If we have Spanish members here, I'd be curious to know if they feel offended by that description.

for me, it's not so much that he calls it the china virus, because i'm certainly not triggered by the term itself.

but it's more about how it reinforces a stereotype that asians are dirty disease spreaders (which has always been a historical stereotype in the usa).
so i'm not offended by the term itself, but by how he's using it and the baggage that's tied to it, if that makes any sense.

cuz there's direct (and possibly deadly) consequences from it.

Yep. All about context (his desire to rile his repub base). But the CCP isn't helping either. They are running away from accountability.

yea, i mean, i recently bought bottles of pepper spray for self defense just in case.
other asian americans around here have took it further and purchased firearms. and i've considered it myself.

so there's the context of all that.

funny thing is that Spanish flu didn't originated from Spain and yet 100 years later it's still called Spanish flu. Spanish have every right to be offended lol

He only changed from calling it coronavirus to exclusively China virus when he wanted to shift the blame for the virus (he’d previously praised Xi’s handling of it). The term isn’t racist by itself, and he’s not even using it to be racist. He’s using it to shift blame, which is stoking up actual racism among his supporters.

i thought i was getting batman fatigue, but the trailer got me hyped for a new batman again.

I dont know why they dont just follow the games’ templates. The first 4 games’ stories would work so well in a movie format.
Biohazard would be a great stand alone movie. That game is VR scared the crap out of me.

My worry with Trump and the CCP is that while he is taking a tougher stance on them which I wish previous US presidents had, his instension are by no means noble. He doesn't care about human rights, he doesn't care what Xi does to people in China, what happens to Uighur Muslims or in Tibet or Hong Kong. He likely doesn't care about expansion in the south Pacific or the Belt and Road programme being used to put a financial leash on various countries.
All he wants is a boogeyman, someone he can rail against. He wants to be able to say he won something, that he beat them. He'd sell all of the USA's principles down the river in exchange for something that he could claim was a victory.
It's nice to see the CCP not getting there own way all the time, but I don't think he's doing anything close to enough damage to them to justify the damage he's doing to the US.

It's Trump we're talking about here. he is at least partly using it to be racist. But yeah, shifting the blame is the most important thing here.

Looks like they're prepping the Batmobiles ahead of filming recommencing.

hope its gonna be ok.

what's everyone think of what little we saw of jeffrey wright as gordon in the trailer?
gave me strong gordon vibes but very different from oldman and jk simmons too.
i wonder how prominent will his role be in this, compared to oldman's in the nolan trilogy.

I bought it (with RE2 remake) during the last Steam sale. It'll be my first RE game... From what I read it's quite stande alone'ish so that I don't have to play the previous games in the series.

I think he's gonna nail it.

I'm guessing he will also be involved in the GCPD show for HBO Max too considering it's set a year before The Batman.

well, from the local perspective of someone living in the bay area, california, the unfortunate side effect is there's been an increase in anti-asian attacks. because some people are dumb and can't differentiate between the ccp and asian americans. lol.
and they don't care too.

just for a taste of the reality on the ground here:
- a few weeks ago a vietnamese resident here was jogging in the evening at a park near my home.
three guys waiving a trump flag were there and started yelling at the guy.
called him a chink, told him to go back to china and threatened to shoot him.
fortunately, he was able to get away and make a police report but it's left him shaken.

this kind of thing really never happened here in my city before - it's a diverse populace here where i live.

now i worry for the safety of my family. not just with covid.

the man in charge now certainly didn't invent racism -- but he's damn sure weaponized it for his own political gain.
and as @Comicbookguy339 has said - he ain't beefin with china for the right reasons. i mean, dood did ask president xi to help him with his re-election before. lol

I've still got some "Taiwan No.1" shirts at home if you need it.....j/k. Stay safe man.

We can't buy pepper sprays in NZ, I managed to sneak one back buying it from TW lol. I bought it in TW before going to China because mother in law's little brother was trying to put her house under his name, I was concerned how stupid he could become. He actually tried to break into the mom's house a few months later.

Media still call it Ebola virus, Zika virus, and US owns names liike Norovirus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme disease, Valley fever, in Mandarin there are terms called German Measles, Hong Kong Feet. WHO stopped using locations a few years ago, but a Malaysian singer said quite well, location naming could be used for people to pay respect and memory to the region, he used a Malaysian example, same with the Nuc in the Japanese city, and Chernobyl, people just, respect these places more after what they went through.

The disease should have been named SARS-COVID-19 but someone doesn't want that because it reminds people of SARS 2003 and the cover up.

Chinese state media invented the term Wuhan Pneumonia, then they called it US virus, Taiwan virus, Japan virus, virus is from France, then Italy. They got pissed when people say it's originated and was covered up there, calling it racism, then they go on to call current events like African Locus disaster, African pig disease, proceed to throw a bunch of Africans in Guanzhao onto the street for pandemic reasons and took their passports. They actually made an ad of a black handyman thrown into a washing machine and became a handsome Chinese and seduced the housewife, and made Africans play monkeys in their annual new year shows, and Tedros from WHO called Taiwan racists, praised China, and human right activist Lebron James was pissed that Houston manager supported HKers against CCP. lol. It makes me sad just typing this

They made their people believe that it was a US soldier named Benassi that went to Wuhan Military Athlete Games last year that brought the virus, and her brother a Dutch DJ also got the virus. Turned out the DJ was not related to the soldier and the DJ's Italian. All this spun out of an American Youtuber's video whose evidence was "a nurse in Wuhan told me" (no diagnosis documents etc) & this theory became the mainstream thinking in China.

Matt Pottinger who was a reporter and got beaten up in China for investigating human right stuff in 2000s joined the Trump admin and he advised him to close borders on China in Feb + calling it "Wuhan Virus" to firm up the origin of the virus as a response to CCP's attack on US army (and a bunch of other countries lol)

and Trump managed to end up calling it "Chinese Virus" :wall:
