Lounge of Justice - Part 90

disney had no plan.
it's actually more sad to me then what happened with JL.
because the dc characters are more resilient. always open to reinvention and reintepretation.

but star wars is only ONE canon. you screw it up, and that's it. u can't really go back and redo.

This is the part that I think some people miss. If you don't like what they've done with DCEU Superman or Batman, there's still plenty of iterations of the characters. The SW universe started with the movies. There is only one Luke Skywalker, one Leia, and one Han Solo, so even comic versions of these characters are drawing off their likeness.

So when Last Jedi so craps on what came before, there's no just rebooting. It's done, it's happened. Luke drank the blue milk from the teet of a blubbery water animal. That's why you have to be even more careful with this IP.

At least DC can say that they had a plan. Sure, their plan wasn't well executed or critically acclaimed. But there was some consistency in Snyder's approach.

Disney on the other hand just relied on the IP value for Star Wars and allowed all the wrong people to be in charge of the franchise. A red flag should have been waved the moment Kathleen said that there was no source material for them to draw from.

yup. i feel the same way about snyder almost like how i feel about george lucas in terms of his prequels.
i didn't like all the choices lucas made for ep 1-3 and how they were executed, but like snyder, i admire that they had a clear vision of what they wanted to do.

the difference is snyder's vision was so niche and divided the audience so strongly, that wb aborted his plans mid-way.

disney should've had one single writing team if not the same director for the new trilogy.
but as soon as disney bought up the rights to SW, we should've realize it was no longer the franchise many fans know and love.
it would become movies made by a committee of corporate overlords.

whenever i now rewatch a new hope and 19 year old luke skywalker goes into the family kitchen and there a cup of blue milk, i will think of how they milked it from the teet of those giant water animals.

like do they have farms of them somewhere? what is the distribution system for these like?

f***in rian johnson.

SW means absolutely nothing to me, but even I felt some kind of way when Luke threw that Lightsaber away. lol

Ben Affleck handpicked Emrata to be his costar on Gone Girl. Fincher didn't know who she was, but Affleck sent Finch a link to that blur lines music video. Fincher shot that scene with them in only 15 takes, but Affleck kept messing up, Fincher jokingly comments that he did it on purpose. From the director commentary.

At this point, the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe for all its silliness doesn't look so bad.

Just gonna sit here and remember Luke building a new and better Jedi Order, learning from the mistakes of the one that came before.
Han and Leia sticking together, through thick and thin, as he becomes a hero of the New Republic and she embraces her destiny as a Jedi.
And Lando being, well good ol' lovable Lando.

Yeah, it was a mixed bag, but when it was good it was really good. The Thrawn Trilogy alone makes for a solid Episodes 7-9.

And look at this. One image says so much, carries such weight to it.

This is Luke Skywalker.

When asked by Snyder, he also chose Gal out of all the other WW actresses. From JLo to Elektra, now to Ana, can't deny his taste.

Seeing him with Ana, it's remarkable looking at him now compared to two years ago.

He seems so much happier now. Between that, his enthusiasm to see Zack's JL come out, The Way Back winning over audiences and his return in Flash, it's great to see him doing so well.

I always found it so....interesting how Denis named Gylenhaal’s character in Prisoners Detective Loki. Are there people out there who are actually named that? :funny:

Pretty much agreed with all of this. I still can't believe that Disney also passed on bringing in this group as the new villains for the Star Wars Lore:

Instead, we had to get a rehash of the Empire, via the First Order. It's also infuriating for me, a Luke Skywalker fan, to see him made into a complete failure that never had a chance to right his wrongs or leave that island at the end of it all. To think that for the first time in the history of cinema since the introduction of SW, we are without a living member of the Skywalker family.

Furthermore, Rey (along with everyone else) had so much potential as one of the new faces of the sequel trilogy. They just had to mess it up by not only making her into a Palpatine but having her pretty take Luke's legacy and accomplishments as her own. Not to mention that they pretty much made Anakin's sacrifice at the end of ROTJ irrelevant as well. I stated before that it would have been a better idea to make Kylo Ren the protagonist of the story with Rey as the main villain. Both would struggle with the opposite ends of the force throughout the course of the trilogy.

Installments like "The Mandalorian", "Rogue One", and even "Solo: A Star Wars Story", are good examples of what happens when you have legitimate fans behind the camera and story.

There's not a single ounce of creative originality behind the so called sequel trilogy. Frankly, the only way you could salvage the franchise would be to introduce the concept of the "Multi-Verse" where the events of the ST took place in another universe/reality.

Dune was always kind of a niche thing though right? I mean the original classic Lynch film wasnt a financial success either right?

Dont get me wrong, im happy this exists and that Warner Bros is throwing money at Denis to remake these properties....but from a business perspective it makes little sense. The original Bladerunner was a big ol flop too.

I guess they seem to think that reviving old IPs would generate more mainstream interest, which could have something to do with Disney SW. Even though SW was always a cultural phenomenon while Dune and Blade Runner catered to a niche audience. Or maybe WB either likes Denis a lot or has him pegged to do something they haven't announced yet so they have him do those passion projects before that. I don't remember but has he ever expressed any interest in doing a comic book film down the line.

It sold it to women :D

We took Aquaman to billion :D

That was China.

I hope this does well because I want Denis to have a blockbuster hit on his resume, but right now I don't see it. Even if it's moved to summer, by then the competition will be tremendous. It'll be a bloodbath and I think people will choose to go to stuff like WW and BW before they choose this.

i just don't see Denis Villeneuve will have a blockbuster hit, like ever. his style is too nuanced for that imo

Yeah that and I just dont think Dune has mainstream appeal, its just so...out there haha. I predict it being a very expensive flop thats critically praised.

dune looks to be a classic sci-fi epic.

in other words, the GA won't care for it and it won't make a lot of money.

i'm wondering if it went the tv series route like game of thrones would it do better?

relatively high budget like got...not like the syfy channel series that came out some years ago.. lol

This is honestly what they should have done with Dune. We could have gotten all 6 books adapted.

On a related note, people were complaining that the trailer didn't feature Zimmer's score and used a Pink Floyd cover instead. Well, turns out it's Zimmer's own arrangement of Eclipse for the movie.

This is Luke Skywalker.
They should've never done away with the books that expanded the Star Wars universe but instead adapted them into movies.
