Black Mariah and Cottonmouth were the less obvious picks for villains. Stryker and Bushmaster are who I though they would of gone for.

I'm sure they will do a good job. Alfre Woodard is a great actress. Woodard was great as a villain on The Last Ship earlier this year.

Has it been confirmed whether or not this will be an origin story?

They said it will show things that happened before his appearance in Jessica Jones.

Daredevil and Jessica Jones had flashbacks to their past and origins so Cage probably will as well.

^Agreed. Actually I read an interview with Melissa Rosenberg where she talked about how she was deliberately leaving Luke and his backstory kind of mysterious in JJ. To avoid stepping on the toes of his own show, where some of that stuff will most likely be fleshed out.

The pressure is on (showrunner and executive producer) Cheo Hodari Coker to make Mariah and/or Cottonmouth as scary and intimidating as Kingpin and Kilgrave.

Black Mariah seems to be the same villain (or in the same vein) as Kingpin, just a politician instead of businessman. I bet she'll be outed for being corrupt just like Fisk was at the end of Daredevil. That's fine, because there are corrupt politicians, but when I think Luke Cage, I think of urban black masculinity. I want to see that explored. What does it mean to grow up in an enviornment like that? How can people change and what is the cause for change? Willis Stryker just seemed perfect because him and Luke started off in similar positions but took different life paths. The choice to use Mariah seems a little unoriginal.

I wonder if Black Mariah would also have Fisk's whole "I'm actually doing this to HELP my city, I'm not really the bad one here" belief system, or if she'd just be flat-out corrupt?

It would be nice if it showed Luke starting out as a hero for hire, going around as Carl Lucas(his real name) then slowly becoming more caring and less about the money as the show progress. Showing him meeting Jessica for th first time, having a run in with the cops, Carl Lucas becomes wanted. Then changing his name to Luke Cage to live a normal life and be a good person and opening a bar. All easily doable with 13 episodes. As long as you spread the story out and include flashbacks, it's not a superhero film/show without flashbacks.

Luge Cage is awesome.

Good question.

Maybe a blend

Love a villain who knows they're corrupt but not flat out dr. doom "i want to take over the universe"

Just happy with her corner of harlem/the city. Kinda like escobar in narcos or something, "helping" the poor but yeah he's a awful piece of trash and he knew it

Lt. Scarfe!

I have a feeling Black Mariah will find out Cage is an escaped con and send the cops after him. Misty and Scarfe probably find out he was framed and try to clear his name but are branded accomplices to a fugitive.

I wonder what will happen to Luke's relationship with Jessica on his show. He didn't seem all that relieved when he awoke after Jessica snapped the neck of Kilgrave.

And this is Misty's origin story, so it means that she did not lose her arm during the Battle of New York. If that was the case, I wonder if they are going to mention where her and Scarfe were during the battle.

I can picture it now:

"Missstttyyy."

"Yes, what is it?"

"You shoul..shoul...should."

"Should what?"

"Youuu should totally get an afro, it'd look amazing on you (dies)."

Oh. Misty looks so generic :(. The actress is amazing I'm sure but I thought she would be a bit closer to the comics

I mean, most policewomen don't wear massive afro's and Kill Bill style leather jumpsuits while on the clock :woot:. Maybe she'll go P.I. at some point in the future, she clearly has some character development to come, she appears to still have two real arms.

She'll lose her arm during the season, it's inevitable. For a pre-Misty Knight, she looks fine.

Three of the five black actresses in the MCU right now are on this show. That will all change with Black Panther, although the odds of the ladies of Black Panther recurring are probably slim at this point, unless there are sequels.

NOOOO!!!!! Not Scarfe!!!!!!!!!!! First the Shadowlands comic turned him into a bad guy, and now the show kills him off :(

Wish he had his signature moustache, and wish they kept him around for the Defenders. I remember in the old Power Man/Iron Fist books, Scarfe was the guy they turned too when they needed police info or they needed to turn in a baddie. He could've helped the Defenders. Really hoping he doesn't die.

And regarding your Black Mariah rumor, I don't think that's how it'll play out. From the press release, it said:

Simone Missick (“Ray Donovan”) has joined the cast to play popular character Misty Knight, a Harlem police detective who is determined to learn the truth about Luke Cage.

Frank Whaley (“Ray Donovan,” “Pulp Fiction”) has been cast as Rafael Scarfe, a hard-nosed NYPD detective who partners with Misty Knight in their Luke Cage investigation.

So it looks like Misty takes on the initiative herself once Cage starts making a presence in New York and has Scarfe join her. I'm sure Mariah will start getting caught up more and more as Cage fights Cottonmouth (isn't she his cousin in this series) and Misty and Scarfe will help track down the clues.

Actually, I think it would be better to take it as a slow burn. Carry Misty's journey over both Cage's and Fist's series. If she loses the arm now, where can she go from there? (Especially seeing how early this is for a lot of the characters). I think in this series, we're just going to see Misty as a cop, and with her one friend on the police squad injured or possibly dying (Rafael Scarfe), she quits. Then her story will pick back up in Iron Fist with her teaming up with Colleen Wing and she'll eventually lose her arm. Seems like a logical pacing to me.

I think you forgot Doris Urich, she was in 4 episode in Daredevil.

I'm guessing Mahoney from Daredevil and Jessica Jones will be the Defenders cop ally instead of Scarfe.

Misty may lose her arm but it probably doesn't happen until the final few episodes. At least it looks like Scarfe may go die a hero rather than live long enough to become a villain.

I think Luke Cage will feature at least four black actresses (Mariah, Claire, Misty and Reva in flashbacks).

Funny part is about Simone is she's rocked the nappy fro before, she pulls it off well. I think this will be an origin story for her just as much as Luke's.
