Distinctive Living, April 2007 Issue; by Jenny Peters
Julian McMahons biorhthms are definitely up. For while he may be recovering from a nasty flu at the moment, his career is feeling just grand, thank you.
The strikingly handsome Australian actor just laughs when it is suggested that hes really hitting his stride in 2007, starring in three high-profile films this year as well as the hugely popular F/X series Nip/Tuck.
Ive been working for a long time, you know? So for me, success is always surpirins, he chuckles. No matter what place you get to, success has so many unpredictables put into it.
However it is pretty easy to predict the success of those upcoming films, starting with Premonition, the new supernatural thriller that co-stars Sandra Bullock along wiht McMahon. Opening in mid-March, the fim follows the lives of a family during a fateful week, a week that plays out in a very strange and inexplicable manner.
Theres a married couple, the husband gets hit by a truck. He dies, and the next day hes not dead anymore, McMahon explains.
Sounds odd, right? Right.
I kind of feel like its one of those movies that should just never be explained, he adds. Its kind of a fine line when youre jumping days and timelines, and somebodys alive and somebodys not alive. Its really kind of surreal, and to really understand it, I donT think theres a real possibility of that.
What McMahon found easy to understand about Premonition was that it was a real opportunity for him to do something completely opposite from Dr. Christian Troy, the amoral plastic surgeon that he has played so convincingly on Nip/Tuck for the past four seasons.
I felt like it was an opportunity to play something I really hadnt had the opportunity to play before, and a character that people never see me as. Nobody ever casts me as a family man, god knows why not, because I am one.
And ultimately it was Sandy (Bullock) who made me want to be in the film. Definitely, theres no doubt about that I really felt like I could see the two of us together in those roles, as husband and wife, I felt like we fit quite well together.
While that choice was infused with the desire to change things up, doing Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silversurfer, McMahons other big film coming this summer, was the result of opportunity knocking a second time.
Going back to Dr.Doom in Fantastic Four was important to me, he remembers.I was contracted to do it, but there was talk of me not being able to do it because of my commitments with Nip/Tuck. But they are both Fox, so there was a bit of political pull involved, and I got to do them both. Ive gotta be honest, when there was talk of me not being able to do it, I started getting really kind of pissy. About the fact that somebody else might be taking over my Dr.Doom - I just wouldnt have it!
But that meant a workload that most people would shudder to consider.
I shot Premonition for the first five months last year, then I went right to Nip/Tuck and Fantastic Four, I shot them at the same time, he grimaces. Wed finished shooting the show at six oclock in L.A. and Id be on a flight at eight oclock to Vancouver, and then theyd only have me for a day or two days, and Id leave for L.A. again!
Add in the making of his third film due out this year, the psychological thriller Prisoner, and McMahon may just fit the definition of the word workoholic, but he says it really isnt so.
I just am always looking for the chance to do something I havent done before, so when the opportunity happens and I have the time, I take it.
Working non-stop would slow down a weaker man, but Julian McMahon keeps himself fit and ready for whatever comes along.
I was very disciplined when I was growing up, when referring to my sport, and I worked out a hell of a lot. I guess its part of my makeup, says the actor, who is pushing forty years old but looks much younger and very strong.I feel like Im twenty still! I still thrive on it. If I dont work out, I dont feel good.
To keep that impressive physique (that he shows off in just about every episode of Nip/Tuck), the 6′3 actor combines a routine of running in the mountains and working out at home, I have a gym in my house with eating what I want.
Its a good life, and one that McMahon shares with his young daughter, the result of his second marriage, to actress Brooke Burns. The couple divorced shortly after their daughter was born, but are both committed to raising their child together. My ex- wife and I get along very well, and were co-parenting our beautiful daughter and we love each other very much. But I wasnt good at being married, he admits wryly.
I thrive on doing different things. The ability to live different lives is kind of part of the reason that you do it. And also the ability not to commit to one certain life, McMahon admits.
I was at the dentist yesterday and they said, oh this will take six months, and I said, I cant do something for six months! I mean, I cnt commit to myself for six months, let alone to the dentist - and then I started to think about what kind of a personality does that take to not want to? I just thrive on the gypsy life of an actor. And I feel like when Im stuck for too long, I get claustrophobic, and get kind of - not depressed, but down on the whole. I feel like Im getting swallowed, when Im doing the same thing.
Which is why hes feeling so great about having such a banner year of 2007, having created four very distinctive characters in four extremely diverse projects.
I feel like Im doing pretty good these days. Ive been around for a while, Ive been working hard for a long time, and I always felt like, if you werent the kind of twenty-year-old shooting star, then it was about a war of attrition in this business. And Ive just been standing around long enough. I love what I do. And I work hard at it. So I hope Im doing good work, I should be! If Im not - somebody should kick me in the ass and tell me to get the hell out of here!

Anyone else see this? You see there's a FF2 article in it. Hence Jess as Sue in the corner.
Oh i didn't know it was old . ijust saw it a few days ago and thought it was new.I bought that a couple of weeks ago..... my input is probably a couple of pages back. Not much new to report, except the Doom/Thing photo gets a 2 page spread.
Not saying much new but thanks anyway. Two year ago, cosmic radiation exposure transformed five people into super-human mutants. Now, four of them think they are the only ones left, but unfortunately, they're wrong. The Fantastic Four now have to wage a battle against the Silver Surfer and Galactus, a planet eating monster. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" has more speed, explosions, and burning clothes than before to keep audiences engaged right up until the fiery conclusion. Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evan, and Michael Chiklis star in this fantastic thriller opening everywhere on June 15.

Dressed to kill, from left: Julian McMahon, Thomas Haden Church and Timothy Olyphant
2007 Summer movie preview
Axis of evil
No one embodies villainy this season better than Thomas Haden Church, Timothy Olyphant and Julian McMahon. An exclusive Q&A.
By Jeffrey Ressner
It's the unspoken rule for blockbuster summer movies: You can't have a supercool hero without a supercruel villain. And in this season's biggest sequels, the evildoers aim to wreak way more havoc. Whether it's Thomas Haden Church playing the Sandman in "Spider-Man 3," Timothy Olyphant as a cyberterrorist in "Live Free or Die Hard" or Julian McMahon's returning Dr. Doom in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," the nasty bits somehow seem a bit nastier this time around.
Speaking with all three actors before our cover shoot, we had hoped to engage them in a deep discussion about the nature of evil in these troubled times. But these erstwhile bad guys got way too giddy to ever get really serious.
Every actor seems to say it's more fun to play a villain than a hero. Why?
Julian: You get an opportunity to say nasty things you want to say or do things you never get to do.
Tim: Yeah, like, why don't I just hit this guy? It just came to mind. [Laughs.] You know Justin Long, that actor in the Apple commercials who plays the Mac? He's in the new "Die Hard," and I figured I should go ahead and smack him. I've been watching those commercials for a while and, representing PC users, I always wanted to take a shot at this guy. It's a nice thing to have that sort of freedom.
What kind of bad-boy mischief have you gotten into off-screen?
Tim: Nothing fit to print, I imagine. [Laughs.]
Thomas: I used to fight a lot when I was younger. There's nothing good to be gained from that -- it's all about ego. I also fractured my pelvis riding a bull. I don't know how you quantify being a badass, but every extreme thing you can do, I've tried.
Was it difficult to get into your character's head?
Julian: I studied all the classic bad guys, from the Hitchcock movies to Darth Vader. Then, I tried to dissect the comic book character. But I realized I was way too inside my head and I needed to chill out a little and just play it.
Thomas: Yeah, if you're playing someone villainous, you're going to perform emotions that you don't necessarily go through on a day-to-day basis.
Tim, in the new "Die Hard," you play a terrorist, although not the Islamic radical type. Is it different playing any bad guy in a post-9/11 world?
Tim: Well, that was something we definitely talked about. But there have been other terrorists. Timothy McVeigh did not necessarily look at himself as a bad guy.
Thomas: He thought he was a patriot, retaliating for a terrorist act by the government. It's not terribly far afield from what a lot of Islamic extremists believe: that they are only retaliating for terrorist acts against them and their culture. At some point, it's definitely a warped philosophy.
I brought the American Film Institute's "100 Years ... 100 Heroes & Villains" list. Are any your personal favorites?
Thomas: The Wicked Witch of the West ["Wizard of Oz"] is a good one. She still freaks me out.
Julian: Some Orson Welles characters [like Harry Lime in "The Third Man"]. And Jack Nicholson in "The Shining."
Tim: Frank Booth [Dennis Hopper] in "Blue Velvet." It's amazing it made that list because it was such a small movie.
There are so many more men than women on the list. Why are males usually the villains?
Tim: Madonna didn't make that list? [Laughter.]
Thomas: For "Truth or Dare?" For backing out of having a baby with Dennis Rodman?
Tim: That evil -- !
Thomas: Well, Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction" is on there. She was definitely a villain, and a damn good one.
Tim: But you're right. They don't make a James Bond film and have the villain be a chick petting a cat.
Thomas: I'm assuming that some of it is because you've got to be able to have a physical fight with the hero. A dude fighting a chick is not hugely appealing to the studio. [Laughter.]
Tim: In my film, Maggie Q and Bruce Willis go at it, a full-on fight. She comes from martial arts films, so she's used to the fighting.
Thomas: Those "Kill Bill" movies, with Uma Thurman. There you go.
Tim: Oh yeah, those chicks were mean.

I picked up the Starlog and Sci-Fi magazines that feature the FF.
Both articles were nearly identical to the Wizard article, and even the photos were all ones we have seen 100 times.
They must have done some sort of Press Day when the were on the Shanghai set and a bunch of magazines all ended up with the same story.
The most interesting bits were in Starlog when Ralph Winter mentioned that they created a book of 500 images from the comics that they used as a guide. I thought that was very cool.
Also Tim mentions that he might be interested in the Puppet-master, Mole-Man, Inhumans or Skrulls for the third film.
