MAGAZINE Articles DISCUSSION

Inhumans, YES
Mole-Man, YES
Puppet-master or Skrulls, UMMMMMM not so much.

I agree. I've never been a fan of the "good guy goes bad" or "good guy seems to go bad" storyline, and both the Skrulls and Puppet-master lead to those storylines. It would be cool to see the classic Ben vs. FF storyline that the puppetmaster could lead to, but I'd still rather see some other villains. If they do use him, I hope it's only a side story.

I would LOVE the inhumans, but that would require a big budget to do right . . . but maybe Fox would see the possibility for a spin-off and invest the money with that in mind.

I would be very excited to see the Inhumans in the sequel......but the fact that he didn't mention Galactus, actually tells me Galactus may just be in the 3rd movie...lol

IF they do the Thing vs. the FF, it has got to be based on the all time classic issues #41-43, when the Wizard turned Ben bad!

I picked up the Starlog and Sci-Fi magazines that feature the FF.

Both articles were nearly identical to the Wizard article, and even the photos were all ones we have seen 100 times.

They must have done some sort of Press Day when the were on the Shanghai set and a bunch of magazines all ended up with the same story.

The most interesting bits were in Starlog when Ralph Winter mentioned that they created a book of 500 images from the comics that they used as a guide. I thought that was very cool.

Also Tim mentions that he might be interested in the Puppet-master, Mole-Man, Inhumans or Skrulls for the third film.
Cool!
Personally i hope the FF would have already encounterd one of them in the 2 years between FF1 and FF2.
I picked up the Chicago Sun Times for the USA supplement plus I get the Chicago Tribune home subscription. The Arts and Entertainment section's lead article is about CGI in the summer movies and even though the article doesn't mention it, they use the Surfer picture we are all familiar with as a huge focus point...it takes up almost the whole front page.

I like the title of the USA article... Axis of Evil :woot:

And I would like to see the Super Skrull, or just the Skrulls at one point, with the emphasis being on their shape shifting powers. They could ramp them up a bit to make them a bit scarier.

Thanks for the scan.

Silver screen enigma
Marvel's Surfer is appealing in his simplicity, but the effects that put him in the 'Fantastic Four' sequel are up-to-the-minute in design.

DO gods ride surfboards?

The upcoming "Fantastic Four" sequel features one of the most enigmatic and best-loved denizens of the Marvel Comics universe: the detached, philosophical and ultra-powerful Silver Surfer. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" pits the superhero group against a creature who rides the crests of cosmic waves, exploring the mysteries of existence, bringing with him salvation … or devastation.

A child of the '60s (he debuted in 1966), the Surfer is a celestial being who stands apart from humanity, appalled by its brutishness but fascinated by its potential.

"He is a Christ-like character because of his origins," said Tim Story, director of both movies and longtime fan of the comics. "We don't know much about his home planet, how he was before he became this."

The Surfer's popularity has transcended his appearances with the Fantastic Four: He has glided into several other comics, including his own; he had his own Nintendo videogame and briefly an animated show in 1998 on Fox; he is often referred to in music (including guitar hero Joe Satriani's "Surfing With the Alien" album) and movies (among them, "Reservoir Dogs" and "Crimson Tide"). Although Story was eager to get such a revered character to the screen, his main concern was "just not to [mess] it up," he said. "At the end of the day, he's simple but really beautiful — you don't have to do much."

That simplicity begins with the Surfer's look: A sleek, nude figure in shimmering silver skin on a matching surfboard.

"People are seeing the poster and saying, 'That's cool.' He's just cool, the way he moves, the way he flies," Story said.

According to John Kilkenny ("Titanic," "Daredevil"), who supervised the film's visual effects, the character's on-screen look is based largely on iconic drawings by co-creator Jack Kirby and others.

"You're going to see the Surfer in those classic poses, like you do in the poster," Kilkenny said. "We're referencing the artwork all the time."

Weta Digital, the effects house behind the "The Lord of the Rings" series, designed a new proprietary system to animate the character (Kilkenny calls it "the next step after Gollum and King Kong"). The hybrid technology allowed the filmmakers to shoot scenes with a live actor playing the Surfer, then replace him with the digital character in a much faster process than possible with previous motion-capture systems.

"We had a physical performance that Tim Story could direct on-set, and the other actors had someone they could refer to instead of playing to" nothing, said Kilkenny, adding that even veteran studio employees have been clamoring to see Surfer footage as it finishes. "We have the controls and ability to go into that level where you can see individual muscles move and flex. I guess for lack of a better term, it'll be really cool."

"I've always been a fan," Los Angeles native Story said of his superpowered charges. "When you played in the street, somebody was the Torch, somebody took the Hulk….

"I've got to tell you, to get the 'Fantastic Four' and turn it into a franchise, the first thing I thought was, 'Will I get the Silver Surfer? Or someone like [the superhero] Black Panther, who was introduced in their book, get Djimon Hounsou and go do it?' But there are so many other great villains and stories — I feel like I hit the jackpot."

Thanks for posting. Nice article.

Revlon has signed two Hollywood stars to represent the brand: Jessica Alba and Beau Garrett.

Alba will be featured in a global advertising campaign for the new Revlon 3D Extreme Mascara. The effort includes TV, print, in-store and internet placements. The first spots will begin airing in July. Print ads debut in August.

Alba co-starred in "SinCity," and as the female lead role in Marvel Comics' action-franchise blockbuster "Fantastic Four."

"She is both a dynamic and beautiful woman who represents the modern, glamorous spirit of the brand," said Elizabeth Crystal, senior vice president of color cosmetics, in a statement.

Garrett, a California girl, will represent the brand for various products to be released in 2008.

Garrett recently made her film debut in Fox thriller “Turistas”, in December 2006. She has also finished work on two independent films, "Live!" which stars Eva Mendes and the horror film "Unearthed."

Meet the Body Behind Fantastic Four's Silver Surfer

A spandex-clad Jessica Alba may be what sells tickets to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (out June 15), but it's the naked dude on the shortboard that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Creature-actor Doug Jones, 46, is riding high as the man behind the film's lustrous, CG-enhanced villain (voiced by Laurence Fishburne) at a time when multimillion-dollar digitally derived characters are sending most prosthetics-wearing mortals to the unemployment line.

You don't know his face (see photo) or his voice (Jones is usually dubbed), but you know his, ahem, body of work: In the 1980s, the 6' 4", 140-pound contortionist was the shades-wearing moon in McDonald's "Mac Tonight" ads. In 1997, director Guillermo Del Toro cast Jones as a humanoid cockroach in Mimic and, in 2004, as the seaweed-hued Abe Sapien in Hellboy. But it was Jones' dual performance in Pan's Labyrinth, as the titular talking faun and the palm-eyed Pale Man, that earned him celebrity cachet — and the film three Oscars. "I try and keep my thumb on the soul of the character," he says. "The physicality comes out of that." Next challenge? Dialog. Jones will be seen — and heard — in Hellboy 2, out next year

On playing the role of Sue Storm…
“People in the business made me feel that it was going to be a problem that I was playing Sue Storm, a blue-eyed blonde, but I didn't see any problem with it myself. Cate Blanchett dyes her hair any color that she needs to for her roles, and nobody cares. People transform themselves for roles everyday—it's called being an actor. It's no big deal—we play dress up for a living. We pretend—we tell stories for entertainment purposes. The only thing I did do was wear contacts to make my eyes blue. And as for most women in Hollywood? They're not real blondes, anyway!”
