Major Season Ten Spoilers Thread - Part III

It's actually all music from John Williams' "Superman: The Movie" score. In fact, I believe it's all from the track "The Planet Krypton." There's no statement of the heroic "Superman" fanfare theme, but what you are hearing at the end is a statement Williams' theme for Krypton.

So awesome that they used it.
See now that has me thinking that they might actually use the Superman theme in some capacity in the Finale. Wouldn't the CW have to receive permission to even use the music at all? So if they received permission to use it in a promo, wouldn't they have gone all the way and request to use the music in the Finale as well? Makes sense to me! :super:

@DamianLovesTV
you guys, just wait til you see the INSIDE photo of Tom and Erica in the new issue. It's major. #Smallville #TvGuideMagazine
Nice cover, but that's what I'm waiting for!

Possibly. That was my first though/hope. Of course, it all comes down to money. I'm assuming it would cost less for usage in a :20 second spot as opposed to multiple uses and variances throughout a 2-hour finale. Maybe, though, with the reboot on the horizon and the Donner-verse seemingly being left to the past, they're easing up on restrictions for using the Williams music on the show.

Which leads me to my next question. Do you think that we might get a different opening than the normal "Somebody Save Me"? I would say no, because of the money issue. Why use some on a new opening when they could apply it toward the VFX or something.

I hope we get one last "Somebody Save Me" that has definitely become a Superman related song that will now forever be associated with The Man Of Steel :super:

I'm going to guess "No." That is Smallville's theme song. It's always been part of the show, and they're not going to ditch it in favour of something else in its final hour(s).

I absolutely agree with you. In fact my 5 year old knows what I'm watching when she hears the song. She will ask, "Daddy, are you watching Smallville again?!" I was watching it one day, and out of the blue she says "Clark is a cutie!" LOL I thought to myself "Oh geez, here we go".

It's funny because I used to play the Superman Returns soundtrack when she was a baby, when I would take her to Daycare or something and she absolutely LOVES Superman now. Even the old movies with Chris Reeve.

Hmm... so is everyone pleased w/the photo because it's the cover of TVGuide, or is it the photo itself?

Because to me it just seems...unimaginative? Boring? The folks at K-site love it, and I'm glad for the show (good press), but it really feels like the Kool-aid ran out before it got to me.

That's barely a good Christmas card. I wasn't expecting/didn't want the suit, but whoa, such a wasted opportunity to create something iconic. That's not an image anyone's going to reference in 10 years.

I must agree. It sort of looks more like a wedding invitation photo than anything else. I guess for me, it was hyped to be something great, and made me expect more. But hey, at least SV got one final mention before it ends.

Or a wedding photo.

you mean something like this ?

Really nice cover -- very interested to see what the inside pic is all about. Would be cool if it was a close up of ED with a blue arm around her and maybe a bit of red cape flowing behind.

THAT would be a good tease for the end...

The music kind of reminds me of Star Wars.

Actually zorex they can't fully use williams stuff. Legal reasons and producers have gotten in trouble before using bits. Also it was nice cw did at least make a promo for pilot reairing.

I know that the show got in trouble in the past (how they were able to do it at all, if they weren't supposed to, is surely an interesting story that I would love to hear...), but what I'm saying is that maybe things have changed. Maybe. I don't know. What I do know is that I heard that entire :20 second spot scored by Williams' "The Planet Krypton" track, from front to back.
Well John Williams is the composer of the Star Wars saga so yeah their are a few similarities in Superman that sounds like The Skywalker theme from Star Wars .
I think he was making a joke. ;)

If I'm not mistaken, SV HAS used notes from the memorable Williams Superman theme for two episodes in Season 2.

1. Rosetta (CR Introduction into the series)
2. Exodus (Season 2 Finale)

However, I had heard that they had gotten in trouble from the film department for even incorporating those themes back then so they weren't allowed to use it. I mean from what I've read, it would cost them a good amount of money for them to be allowed to use that music in any type of way now.

I seem to recall an interview where it was said that they had been given permission to use the Williams theme and about how excited/thrilled they all were...but then they wound up using it too much in subsequent episodes and got in trouble.

Probably because they screwed up their budget in extra monies that WB TV/CW extra had to shell out to the film division, Williams or whoever.

Would be cool zorex but not really needed. Louis can surely make something good himself.

SUPERCOUPLE: Welling calls Durance "a fantastic partner. We have a lot of fun when we work--I think that comes through. We've sort of developed this really crazy idea that our characters would actually enjoy each other. Durance, who joined the show in Season 4, says that "from the get-go, Tom's been incredibly kind to me and made me feel at home, and you don't forget that."

Tom: "This show, to me, has always been about Clark Kent--it hasn't been about Superman. And it was very important at the end that we make sure that we wrap up the Clark Kent story."

That's not to say we might not get a red- blue- and yellow-hued surprise. "I will just say to keep watching through the whole two hours" executive producer Kelly Souders says of the finale. "There is a very, very special moment that we love, and everyone who is looking for that moment won't be disappointed."

"The timing between the two of them [Lois and Clark] has never been easy," Souders says. "And there are definitely some ups and downs to be had before the end."

"When we were first introduced to [Lois], she was alone and had a lot of insecurities and rough edges," says Durance. "Then as she found out what she was meant to do by becoming a journalist, and who she was, she started to calm down and become more grounded. She meets up with this crazy, wonderful Clark Kent, and I think he helped make her who she is as well."

Having Michael back on set for the first time in three years "was a lot of fun," Welling says. "It was like he never left, but it was also like he'd been gone forever."

“I’ve been amazed at how well the writers have been able to keep that relationship going without it actually coming together,” Welling says of Clark and Lois' journey.

It’s not all joyous reunions for Clark, who must vanquish this season’s foe, the mysterious Darkseid. The extraterrestrial despot has been using his minions to sew fear and hatred among the people of Earth. “I’m really excited about the way the Darkseid story climaxes,” Peterson says. "Because it doesn’t overwhelm the plotline in these last few episodes—it stays in the background and hits right when it needs to.”

Most recently, Darkseid targeted Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), whose ultimate challenge comes in the Phantom Zone. There, he and Clark encounter Darkseid’s newest ally, Kandorian power monger Zod (Callum Blue), not seen since last year’s season finale. Knowing Ollie is struggling with the darkness, Zod tries to tempt him down the path of evil.

Hartley who made his directorial debut with the episode says, “All that anyone’s been able to tell him, including Clark, is that you really can’t beat it. Ollie’s got to find a way—or die.”

Of course, Clark has faced death many times—and might once more. “There are some beautiful, heartwarming, emotional moments, and there are a couple of moments of tragedy that we can promise,” Peterson teases of the finale.

Alas, the Grim Reaper has nothing on Lex Luthor, Clark’s most notorious nemesis, who makes his long awaited return in the finale. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Clark’s onetime best friend for the series’ first seven seasons, finally agreed to a guest spot after a long dramatic courtship. “I did everything I could,” says Welling who’s also an exec producer on the show. “I teased him, I called him, we went to dinner.” Though Rosenbaum once Tweeted that a guest spot was “not gonna happen,” he had a change of heart in February. “We’ve been in countless conversations with him over the last couple of years because obviously we love him and we wanted him back,” Souders says. “To Micheal's credit, I think he wanted to be a part of the final chapter of the story.” This time however, he opted for a bald cap rather than shaving his head.”

HAVING ROSENBAUM BACK ON SET for the first time in three years “was a lot of fun,” Welling says.” It was like he never left, but it was also like he’s been gone forever.” Of the pairing of Ollie and Chloe, Mack says both superheroes without having any superhero abilities that makes for a really dynamic, exciting, and sexy team.” Tess “gets so much deeper, especially in Season 10,” Freeman says. “A total switch around and I’ve loved being able to play all sides.”

Another burning question for fans is how things will wrap up for Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack), Clark’s longtime friend, superhero computer whiz and one of the few characters who didn’t originally spring from the DC Comics mythology. A series regular for nine years, Mack signed on for just five episodes this season. Though she completed theat obligation this winter, she decided to come back for the finale. “It was important for me to pay homage to the character, the people I’ve work with, and the fans,” Mack says. “I had a realization, while I was doing the give episodes that this has been such a huge part and I am so blessed and so lucky to have had the opportunity. I wanted to make sure that I was respected.”

Mack won’t say much about Chloe’s fate, “she ends in a very healthy and levelheaded way. I love that the writers have respected my character for a long time, and she goes out with the same attitude (?) she came in with.”

AlMiles' original ending wouldn't have worked now that the show has 10 seasons.
It sounds like 2 people may die in the finale here. I hope Chloe doesn't have a big role in the finale because she already had her arc in the middle of the season. Please tell me Clark doesn't die in the finale because that would be hard to swallow when he hasn't become Superman yet.

I'm looking forward to Dominion where Clark and Oliver are in the Phantom Zone encountering Zod. I wonder if Slade returns in this one. This would mark Oliver's first time in the Phantom Zone. :super:

Really nice to get a clearer idea of "Dominion." I'm happy to hear, for certain, that we'll be revisiting the Phantom Zone, and running into the Zone's General Zod.

I think Clark on a quest is in Dominion and could continue in Prophecy. I'm glad that they will address Oliver being marked with the Omega symbol since Masquerade. :super:
