Well if this has good WOM (which it does by moviegoers from what I can tell) Saturday numbers will be bigger than Friday numbers (it tends to work that way all opening weekends, unless the film has rotten WOM, think Hulk) and that puts it at around IMO $110 million in 2 days! Then you take in another $35 millin or so on Sunday and that is somewhere over $140 million IMO.

Damn, I don't know if Spider-Man 3 will be able to break that come May 4, now.

It's not gonna make $140 million this weekend, you pirate prognosticator. It'll drop like hell today to around 35 million and drop further still on Sunday. It'll make $115-$120 this weekend which unfortunately means it beats Spider-man's record.

Screens with pirates are packed today, The crowd reation in my showing was great, and I've oly heard good things from people who have seen the movie. This weekend will be huge.

I'm glad Pirates is doing amazingly well. Its a good movie and a great cast.

I think Superman fans were thinking it would do big numbers because Superman was the most popular superhero out of them all...about 40 years ago.

This isn't the first time Superman has been defeated by pirates.

Lol, these canines are worst than Hulk-dogs. :D

I was wrong earlier. Pirates will beat Superman at the box office. But, my opinion on the movie hasn't changed. I didn't like the book for the same reasons that I didn't really like the film.

This thread is made for discussing about the BO mainly between the two movies, and not about their quality.

My feelings about SR are mixed for the most part, and I felt that Singer really dropped the ball in several areas. I will go see POTC2 tonight and see if it holds up against the hype.

I disagree with you. POTC2 is having a huge day. I wanted to see it agian today, but when I called she said all the showings were sold out except for the 9:00 pm showing.

Wow I'm actually impressed with Pirates opening. Biggest Day Ever.

You just don't like it because for some reason you feel that if Pirates "wins" at the BO that somehow emasculates SR. Your "faith" to a summer blockbuster is not only pathetic, but laughable. I suggest to take up another hobby. I pretty much knew all along that Pirates was going to make more money. PotC has Star Wars syndrome.

^^^^Which did you prefer between SR and POTC2 Stewie ?

It seemed obvious that POTC would have the bigger opening because lets face it, Superman was the biggest hero 30 years ago but not today. People love the antihero role too much now, the whole boy scout routine is old. Flawed characters like spidey and rogues like Jack and Wolverine are far more interesting and have so much depth compared to the classic goody goodies.

I thought SR was criminal. I hated it. I wanted to like it, but Singer just doesn't get Superman. He just made Superman a Superhero version of himself...which was just wrong.

I thought PotC was very good, but there were some flaws, mainly the score and it was maybe 15 mins too long... but, PotC was intelligent with great dialogue and characterization. Clearly the best film of the summer. I don't get why it has a 52% on RT, but I think history will show that this film is a classic in a classic trilogy. Like I said before, PotC has "Star Wars-syndrome."

I was surprised how well Pirates was doing with low critic ratings on Rotten Tomatos and on Metacritc which just goes to show you, that moviegoers don't really listen.

It's more like "Matrix" syndrome for this trilogy. Matrix Reloaded did huge box office and then Matrix Revolutions came out only a few months later and not too many people cared. Only 10 more months til POTC3, I wonder if people will be Depped out and the Bloom will have fallen off the rose after such a short time between movies. This next one opens a week after Shrek 3, good luck is all I have to say.

Umm...this film just broke the record for opening day...and is set to break the record for opening weekend. So..you are flat out wrong.

No kidding, plus how can this possibly be labeled as Matrix syndrome when we haven't even seen the third film. As trilogies go, it all comes down to number three. Matrix's number 3 sucked, so the whole trilogy was somewhat tainted.

Also lets not forget, Pirates isn't trying to be this mind boggling film that challenges people's perception of life. It's a fun adventure that strives to entertain and so far has done exceedingly well at that. I would much sooner label POTC with Indiana Jones syndrome before Matrix syndrome.

I just got back from seeing Superman and I thouht it was really great. I'm not going to vote yet cuz I haven't seen POTC 2 yet so I'll give my opinion on the pirates later.

Great job by Singer on Superman & Brandon Routh did awsome too.

you make it sound like it's a bad thing. no one really gives a damn about what critics have to say anymore. and i think all the bashing on RT had to do with some SR fallout.

It will however be interesting to see what the WOM does to it's numbers, if the general public shares the (unfavorable) opinion that the critics have about POTC2, it obviously won't be good. Thankfully (for Pirates, at least), so far it doesn't look like that'll be the case.

Im really surprised that pirates beat superman. After I saw both, I see why. Pirates is a much better movie than supes. Supes is good, but Pirates is better. This is actually healthy for the BO. *claps. Lets see if spidey 3 beats it out next year.

And that's why movies like "You Got Served" are #1 at the box office? The truth is you can spin critics reviews 1 of 2 ways:
Wow the critics agree, my movie rocks.
Wow the critics don't agree, but I never listen to them anyways because they don't know what they are talking about.

I could care less either way. I was just posting it as a statement of fact or for informational purposes. I am probably going to see Pirates just not this weekend.

But with top grossing movies, critics usually agree with the amount of people going to see it. There are few exceptions.
