Lets hope something gets worked out, in favor of the X-Men team franchise! Check out the article:

Our source at Marvel Entertainment gave us the latest update on the ongoings of the X-MEN franchise, and what the future may hold for our favorite mutants:

Recently at the company’s web-site, we posted the latest on what was going on with all our movie projects during our last web-cast, which is available for downloading at Marvel.com. At one point during the conference, It was brought up that the future of both the X-Men and Spider-Man movie franchises will depend on how talks between Marvel, The Sony Company, and Fox will go next.

Since then some talks have taken place, and I must say that at the moment, It tends to favor Spider-Man more. Sony is so confident that Spider-Man 3 will be a hit that both the studio and Marvel are in active talks about doing more movies with the current cast and film crew. Talks between Marvel and Fox have not gone so smoothly.

I am not saying that it is hopeless, but there tends to be more disagreement on what to do next with The Children of the Atom. There is really no firm deal on the table as to what to do next. At the time of X3’s release, it was widely reported “well this is the last movie” despite the last scenes that were shown. Then the Box Office results kind of made Fox change their minds, at least all of a sudden they became more open to the idea of doing an X-Men 4.

But Marvel has an alternate plan for the future of these movies. One that Fox is reluctant to take seriously. However, they may have little choice in the matter because ultimately the X-Men are Marvel’s characters and with Marvel making even bigger steps to control and have more say in the production of their movies, the news on the future of the X-Men movies (which will be revealed in good time) I’m sure will come as a pleasent surprise to both the long time X-Men readers and those who have just recently got interested in them because of the movies.

I'll try to get further updates as they become available!

restart? To me, it screams that... I want an X4 :(

OMG I need updates on what's Marvel's plan!!!!!!!

but thank you ant for the info

i've commented in the x3 thread but please no restart i understand if the movie was made years ago and there was no hope of a returning cast but not in a situation like this

I don't want anymore cinematic adaptions of the X-men. Its too easy for hollywood hacks to come in and corrupt it.

As for Marvel trying to get more power to save their characters and have faithful translations I say this...

Too little, too late

Unlike the Batman movies, this trilogy was not so far off the mark that a relaunch is neccessary. They can rotate the roster and bring on some X-men we really haven't seen yet and move on. :)

That won't work because if they do that it will be just like another teen superhero flick like Sky High. What they need to do is bring back the old cast.

They need to keep going with the current story line and the current characters. A total restart would make the first 3 movies seem pointless.

But even with the obvious holes in the story let me spell it out to all you X-Men fans out there and this is a quote from the studio themselves, “20th Century Fox owns the rights for perpetuity, which is a fancy word for forever” and it's the studio who controls the films.

from IESB.net

 :(

the studio would say that- read the fine print- its dependant on them continuing to actively pursue an x men movie- and spin offs

Considering all of the spinoffs that are being considered, anyone know how the legal rights work with all the various X-characters? Does Fox own the rights to all X-books and characters? Or just anything called X-Men?

So could another studio do a Generation X movie, if it didn't deal with the Xavier Institute and X-Men? Or if New Line finally did the Deadpool movie, could Cable appear in that or does Fox own the rights to Cable since he has been an X-Man?

At this point I wonder how a relaunch would do and if so, where would you start in the comics?

The very first class? As someone pointed out you'll get Sky High with a Marvel spin.

The classic Claremont? You'd have to recast all the major roles, and then the actors and actresses would be under the scrutiny of who played those characters before in the franchise. (except for a few cast changes I'm sure we probably would like better).

I'd like to see what Gary Gray has to give us in an X-men film. I think he did a good job managing a team-driven movie in Italian Job.

what's the point in rebooting? certainly not at this stage. the batman series was flawed from the get go, SERIOUSLY MAJORLY FLAWED, but this series has been a huge success, so why would they wanna reboot? and who else at this stage could possibly play professor x? stewart was born for the role.

Right.

It's not as if they raped ALL main characters of some of their most important attributes.

It's ot as if Logan was little more than an obnoxious a**hole in the movies.

It's not as if Cyke was little more than the guy who has to look bad so Logan can look good.

It's not as if they'd make Jean seem like wise slightly older woman and not give her a temper.

It's not as if they'd turn Storm into a mindless weather witch who keeps whining to Logan about making the right decision. Feel free to insert any hair joke here.

It's not as if they switched one of the two main characters of a classic storyline.

It's not as if they decided two incorporate TWO storylines in one movie and ended up botching the two of them. Badly at that.

Oh well. Just for the record, this isn't me starting a flame war...

I just don't get how any can't get that X3 pretty much raped the original material to death only to dig up the corpse and go at it again.

Well said but you could have used another word for rape that wasn't as emotionally charged for the wrong reasons

Al lthe raping aside, I still liked X-3, but a fourth one needs to be made to justify somethings or..i dunno i felt like x-men universe needs to be expanded upon further, that X-3 didnt conclude everything for me.

Screw changing the cast. Everybody blew chunks at some point. New direction and a BRAND NEW WRITING STAFF would fix alot of the problems. Case in point. Worse lines in the trilogy.
4. Storm: Do you know what happens when...(Thanks J. Whedon for that one.)
3. Wolverine: Hold this line!
2. Scott: Jean, how?
Jean: I dunno. [SHRUG!] {talk about a mood killer :whatever:}

And the worse line that ever came out of a cast member's mouth...

1. Cyke: Storm, fry 'em. {No wonder why the man died. He's had a death wish since the first movie. Yeah, that's right, I went there.}

Getting rid of crap like that will fix alot of the problems with the cast.

5. Im the Juggernaut *****
6. Best defense is a good offense
7. Class Dismissed
8. (Wolverine acting like a leader)
9. Warren Worthington II: This is what we want
Angel: No Its what you want

I'm sorry I am a die hard X-men fan, and regardless of how crappy III was I still bought it on DVD. They are the X-men, and if yer a fan regardless of how stupid they sound or stupid crap they did in the movie it is in their history now. We have to accept it and move on. We shouldn't focus on how crappy III was but how GOOD 4 needs to be as well as all the spin offs.

The film got OK reviews, the characters weren't THAT off the mark. The franchise at this moment is definitely salvagable. It will require a couple of new actors, a solid writing team, and a terrific director.
Also, Fox can give a bit more control to Marvel, just to straighten the dumb things out, but they definitely shouldn't pass all the creative control to them. The comics just wouldn't transfer to the big screen very well as-is, and I'm afraid a comic book company may not grasp that.
Since movie companies tend to dilute, the best compromise is to get a creative team that's loyal to the comics yet capable of transferring the books to film.

It's very possible, and very doable.

You know, I'm finding it hilarious that people think a reboot will guarantee a more faithful approach to the X-Men on film. Comic book films have been "unfaithful" for years. It's not a new thing, and it's not only FOX who does it.

Why the hell would FOX reboot, in the middle of an established and successful franchise? Because they feel they didn't do Cyclops, Storm, Iceman and Rogue justice? It's entirely possible to make the X-Men even more faithful and flesh them out further in a fourth film. It just takes a little imagination.

I wouldn't say "guarantee". More like better odds.

On a side note, I'll agree most comic book movies so far did little justice to the source material. Christ, I've been disappointed by most of them so far.

Two words: wistful thinking. It's little more than that, really. We're painfully aware they most likely won't.

Possible, yes. Likely, no. :D
