Marvel Now

We're going to have Marvel based around the movies. I do not like it.

I don't really see NOW as particularly movie-based. There's Black Fury, but we all knew he was going to replace Nick eventually as soon as he was introduced. Other than that, it just seems like yet another status quo that'll be here for a year or so and then completely forgotten with next summer's event.

I would say most people didnt even know there was a black Nick Fury in 616. I definetly see this move as movie motivated. Marvel has done this move in the past after a major film has released. We got to see several movie inspired influences in the X-books following release of their film almost 10 years ago. This is nothing new

Yeah, leather costumes and such. But the actual content of the comics is usually kept free of the movies' influence. Grant Morrison wasn't forced to refocus the X-Men around Wolverine or turn Rogue into a teenager. There's usually a very vague sense of influence from the movies at most.

The mansion went back to being a school but they made it different by having it become an actual academy with dozens of new students while the X-Men became active teachers during Morrison's run. That happened just as the movie came out with a similar interpretation of how they operated. Mystique , Sabes and Toad all changed their looks to be in line with movie counterparts and Toad even gained new abilities that he had on the big screen

Anyway, the one thing I do wish/want them to do is have an Avengers book that's more like the Ultimates in one, vague, respect;

Make it a simple, self-contained book that spends its time highlighting the various awesomeness of the core group of Avengers characters - like the movie did.

I'm rather disinterested in Hickman's Avengers purely because it seems so focused on these massive, continuity-connected stories with a giant assortment of cast members...I really don't want that. I want a book with Cap, IM, Thor, with the usual handful of supporting cast members.

And then outside of that, all of the other books seem to be working off of some other original premise or concept.

Yeah, I don't really see the point of calling it a new design. Opena turned in the movie costume with a few changes to the torso area. Not that I mind it, really. The main thing that bugs me in those designs is the fact that Cassaday came along and made the scalemail look like a big, poofy sweater again.

I'll wait until I see it fully colored and done by someone other than Cassaday. My early thought is that it's a bit of overkill. It should be 85% symbol and 15% military. I prefer the subtle changes like Steve Epting did....adding high lace red leather combat boots and the utility pouch belt.

I don't mind the soldiery feel. So long as the character of Captain America remains Marvel's most idealistic hero, I'm good. If he starts sliding into Ultimate D-Bag territory, then I'll start getting concerned.

I hope that won't happen but there were times when Spidey blurred the line between 616 and Ultimate. I hope and pray.

Well they were basically the same character, ultimate was more of a reboot in modern times to basically the same character, although certainly supporting cast had big changes.

It's not just with NOW, but overall, Marvel has been trying to make their comics line be just like their movie line. Fraction's Invincible Iron Man attempts to feel like the Iron Man movies, Captain America is now going to look like his movie counterpart, we now have black Nick Fury, and I won't be surprised if they make Thor more like his movie counterpart once the Dark World comes out.

The only thing that doesn't feel like the movies is the X-Men.

But those are just superficial changes except for Black Fury. As long as Cap's still written like the 616 Cap, I don't really care what his costume looks like. Same with Thor. I'd be pissed if they stopped staying true to the characters. Iron Man's having an arc reactor in his chest instead of the classic vest that prevented him from dying is not a big deal; Iron Man suddenly acting like RDJ's performance and drinking again for no reason would be. I haven't seen much evidence of really substantive changes coming from the movies, excepting again Black Fury (and at least they wrote a story introducing him and Coulson to the comics rather than just retconning them in as if they'd always been there).

I'm pretty sure we'd hate it if they put Cap in his Nomad costume again, regardless of him being written as he always has.
And I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be very impressed if the X-Men went back to those damn leather pants and puffer jackets (like even spandex isn't sweaty enough for what they do without adding all over biker gear).

Not to spark the superhero/soldier debate with Cap again, but he is part of the superhero community, has been so for more years than he was ever a soldier (even in the Marvel sliding timescale), doesn't operate in the battlefields any military are currently deployed in, doesn't operate at the behest of the US government's political or military needs (except in very rare cases), and however you think of him role-wise the guy still backflips and dives about like an acrobat so baggy pants and shoulder pad armour are just stupid.

You want to make his costume (or any Marvel ones for that matter) more realistic or reflect a different tone for that character? Design them the way the Young justice cartoon has - seams, reinforced areas (but without strapping hockey pads on). Looks good, looks like a superhero, works like it would have to in "real life".

Ha I like how they said they didn't notice the similarities between the new Cap costume and the Chris Evans one. Yeah right.

Wait they integrated a black Nick Fury into the 616 verse? I haven't been keeping up at all. I always wondered if it would happened with the popularity of the film but I never thought they'd actually do it.

Yeah - apparently Sgt Nick Fury Jr is going to be the new top cop (apparently there's no one else more qualified despite his having no intelligence community experience)

The only thing that doesn't feel like the movies is the X-Men.

They tried that once. I remember they altered the appearances of Mystique and Toad to make them like their movie counterparts with no viable explanation. It was during Claremont's 2nd run.

The backlash was huge enough and it was promptly reversed. That was back in the good old days when they would listen to fans input and not strictly go by sales numbers. :o

Aww hells no
The new Cap costume is awful.
and I'm a huge fan of Opena's art, but damn, it is just wayyyy too busy
And then Cassaday's scales look way too feathery
I would absolutely hate to be the artist on that book
Opena's hexagonal scales would be the biggest ***** in the world to draw consistently

also.... goddamn helmet with goddamn chinstraps!!! terrible terrible

Eh, every artist at some point or another gets the suit wrong and it goes from chainmail to art deco fish scales.

I agree, no need for the helmet unless he's riding a motorcycle or jumping out of a plane. The mask is a perfect fit and should never NOT be used. I've seen a ton of variations of Cap uniforms throughout the years that imposters and stuff have worn, and the thing they always had in common was the mask stayed the same.

I too don't see oh we are turning 616 into movie verse deal. Big deal on nick fury jr. The character was around for a bit right before his family ties where revealed right. And with white fury been backseat for while now was probably bound to happen. Besides that I don't see movie verse taking over main book verse.

Like others said this is probably just a new status quo that will last a yr or two and then fade away for the next big event story. I am still happy marvel isn't pulling let's reboot everything crap dc did.

It's a big deal in the sense that they are tossing a lot of the classic visual aspects of the character out the window to appeal to a potential new demographic that may or may not come aboard due to the movies.

I look at it like Marvel is basing ideas off of what Hollywood came up with instead of the other way around.
