Ugh...sounds horrible.
That's what I don't get: Marvel characters have always gorwn and changed. Reed & Sue got married, and had kids. Peter and MJ got married. Daredevil got married. The entire cast of the X-Men grows and changes all the time. Each character on the Avengers has a rich istory with multiple marriages, divorces, kids, etc.
Conversely, DC doesn't allow much room for growth with their characters. Batman will NEVER be married. He will never raise a child (yes, I know he has a son that was raised in secret by Talia...lame). Superman married Lois Lane. Wow. We didn't see that coming. He will never have a kid, though....unless it's in a bad movie or something. Green Lantern was replaced by another Green Lantern, and they just brought the old one back.
Now, I know, these characters are ICONS....that isn't being debated. However, it does make for some damned boring comics. Superman will always win...he'll always come home to Lois Lane, and he'll always work at the Daily Planet. Batman will always be rich, he will always operate out of Gotham, and he will never be married, because he is Batman. This is just the way it is, and, every once in awhile, we get some kickass stories about these characters, and then the writer leaves, and the same stuff happens again...and then, after 10 years, there will be a crisis, and anything that has changed will be undone.
The last part is my problem. I don't want Marvel to resort to a "crisis" everytime they do something stupid. The unmasking....the "Other"....Sins Past...all these things can be undone within continuity. Hell, Marvel coudl ask about 30 people from this board alone, and they could have everything fixed.
Unfortunately, that won't sell books. They need the gimmicks, the big "shock" events. I guess it's the state of the industry, now. The 90's revolved around gimmicky covers and killing characters, and now, the 00's revolves around gimmicky crossovers and killing characters. Superman and Captain America are just collateral damage for the decades in which they were killed. Looks like Spider-man's marriage, which has stood for almost 20 years, will now fall victim to the same killer.
Yeah, I know, this may all be some "in-house" problem. The writers may be able to tell stories more easily with a single Peter Parker than with a married one. Great. How many disposable love interests are we going to have to endure. "I can't think of any ideas....let's bring in a new love interest!" It will soon come to pass. We'll get rid of Mary Jane as his wife, and then we'll watch Peter Parker shuffle through dead-end relationship after dead-end relationship....because we KNOW he'll never be allowed to have anything more than a semi-serious relationship. Ugh.
I really WANT to like One More Day. I WANT to LOVE Brand New Day. I just don't think I'll be able to do it. I honestly feel that all the talent has been put on the books as an attempt to keep the longtime fans who will leave when the marriage ends. "Hey....all the longtime fans want Dan Slott and a 'hot' artist on Amazing Spider-Man....how about we give it to them as an incentive to stay on a book that we've intentionally ruined? GO TEAM MARVEL!"
I hope I'm wrong. I hope this is all misdirection, and JMS finally gives us a storyarc that reminds us of how great the Spider-Man titles can be....unfortunately, I hoped that with "The Other", as well. Fool me once, shame on you...
