Mask Of The Phantasm Appreciation Thread

No, but the character is visually very similar to a villain from the comics named the Reaper.

I searched the character up and they do look similar in appearance. They're both Grim Reaper/Angel of Death-type characters. What did the Reaper do in the comics?

Its been awhile since I read Batman: Year Two, but he shows up (obviously) early in Batman's career. He also kills Joe Chill, the guy who killed Bruce's parents.

If I'm not mistaken, that's also the one of the stories where Batman uses guns? It's a weird thing to see, but from reading his early Golden Age appearances, it doesn't surprise me that they done it again.

Batman using firearms always bothered me and him murdering people just kind of kills the character for me in a way. Though, it's sort of cool seeing him use them and murder people at times. I guess it's just like a novelty, just like a throwback to his bloodthirsty beginnings.

I don't remember if he uses guns or not in Year Two. I don't have a copy of the comic any more. Someone else may know.

I don't think he does though...

He does use a gun, but he doesn't kill anybody. I kind of like Year Two, since I read i as a kid...but I just don't buy the "The Reaper beat the crap out of me...time to join the NRA!"-stuff. I don't believe that Batman would resort to guns just because he lost that one battle.

Mask of the Phantasm came in last night, and I watched it finally.

It’s definitely my favorite Batman movie, Conroy steals the show, and the moment when he’s at his parents’ graves is outstanding. The part where Joker laughs when he was going to die was awesome, the explosions and him just laughing like it didn’t matter anymore. It was very Ledger-esque, and I loved Hamill’s Joker in this movie. His Joker is right there with Ledger, maybe even higher, in the great Joker portrayals.

The ending where he looks up at the Bat signal was just wow, with that score and the look, it was absolutely terrific.

Agree. I love MOTP, it's up there with Batman Begins as origin stories go. Conroy, Hamill and Delany give great performance and I wish this got Bluray treatment or even release it on the big screen but only one can dream.

Well, it was released on the big screen originally for about a week. I saw it in theatres.

As great as Hamill is... Conroy actually does steal the show in this one. He completely knocks it out of the park.

It needs the Criterion treatment.

Oh yeah. Its his best work as Batman. He's still good but I don't think he's reached that level since.

I’d definitely get this movie again if a bluray for it was ever released.

I think this is Conroy at his best; he just made this movie a hundred times better. I don’t think it would’ve been as good if someone was cast as Batman, Conroy just seems to nail the role perfectly, and he really shows his whole arsenal here.

As much I hate saying it, I like it even more than the Dark Knight trilogy to be honest.

Nothing wrong with saying that, I feel the same way.

Den Of Geek's 25 underrated 1990s movie soundtracks

15. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - Shirley Walker

[YT]C-m0ehT3_mo[/YT]

Echoing Elfman’s 1989 theme, Walker took those serious brass tones and ran with them for this animated Batman outing. Trumpet fanfares contrast with jaunty piano licks for the deformed comedy of Mark Hamill’s The Joker, while the judicious use of synth noises give the whole story a supernatural air.

Best of all, though, is the choir chanting a strange language at a scarily loud volume. Only when you listen carefully do you start to work out what they’re singing: their own names backwards. It’s exactly that sense of humour that seems to pervade Shirley’s work – somewhere between her conducting and writing, you always get the feeling that musicians enjoyed what they were playing.

Still one of my all-time favourite scenes. :hrt:

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. absoluetly killed it.

Also one of the rare times he had his cowl down.

I was watching this movie again the other day, and I noticed something, when Batman puts on the cowl at the end of the movie. He puts it on backwards then turns and does the glare, has anyone else noticed that?

Yeah, that used to bug me slightly. I figured that when they cut, Bats quickly flipped it around.
