Master and Commander???

I've seen it once when it came out. I remember really liking it. Been wanting to see this again for a quite long time now.

I'm a big fan of Peter Weir anyway.

I don't know about one of the greatest films ever, but it certainly is a good film. Not in my absolute top, but hovering somewhere right underneath the absolute top. ;)

Its great, but the best ever? not imo. Still, it gets a solid 9/10 from me.

No, Bettany would nail the Joker. I don't care what any deluded Bat fan has to say.

Eh, still have Bettany fatigue from the Bat-boards.

I don't think after Heath made the role his own, Bettany will get a chance to do it any time soon.

Na not THE best ever, one of THE best ever. :cwink:

:D No worries, I could imagine what that feels like!

But I do think Bettany would bring a great take to the role, maybe in future franchises? He'd have to make it a personal portrayal though, just like Heath. Really delve into the character, I think he could create something really evil.

The next time a reboot comes along, he'll probably be in his 50's. I would rather see him do his magic with another character than Mr. J.

Yea maybe so. He is a great actor, I think he should play more villains though.

Films that involve the age of sail are a favorite of mine, and Master and Commander certainly is one of the best.

The other (and probably main) reason it didn't get a sequel was because Crowe didn't sign for one. Bettany did, Weir probably did, but Crowe did not.

Hmm that's strange. As someone else has already mentioned it looked like Crowe was having a whale of a time in this movie.

Too bad. That ending had me chomping at the bit for the next one, it's the reason I got into the book series.

I agree Ace, it is underrated. It had the unfortunate timing to come out in the same year as LOTR:ROTK, which means it didn't get the attention it would have received on a normal year at the Oscars.

It's so strange that this movie is considered "under-rated" now, because it did well at the box office when it came out, and it did very well with critics. Then people just sorta...forgot about it.
Actually, it was considered a major disappointment at the box office, and I heard they were supposedly gonna do sequels (it was based on 1 in a series of books, after all) until it "bombed." But you're right, it was very well-received by critics. It just never really made a splash with the mainstream at all. Hence, underrated.

And yeah, Bettany was awesome in this film. It was one of my favorite roles of Crowe's, too. I love how perfectly rousing-yet-understated his "This ship is England" speech was. I'd love to see Crowe and Bettany in another movie together, as they always have wonderful chemistry.

After ROTK, this got the most Oscar nominations that year (10), including Best Picture & Best Director, but we all know how those went. Like Infinity said, if it were any other year... :csad:

Definitely in my top 10 films of all-time. Like I said before, it's about as perfect as a movie can get, imo.

It wasn't actually based on one of the books. It's based on bits from 3 books in the series.

Its nice to see so many hypesters have an appreciation for this movie. IMHO it never got the wide acceptance it earned or deserved. It won two Oscars and was nominated for like, everything else under the sun.
Its the original Star Trek prequel. :woot:

I was under the impression that Crowe still wanted to do another movie anyway, regardless of whether he was signed.

Alas, poor Surprise (and Acheron).

Couldn't agree more!
