From knowsbleed:
Why do you think The Hype has changed so much in just a few short years. Circa '04-'05, the Community and different sections of the Hype were very interesting forums to post, and now it's sort of... neutered. Why has moderation cracked down so so very much on aspects that were, in the past, overlooked as being said for the sake of... *OMG*... a good laugh?
Hmmm, good question. I think there are a number of reasons.
1.) The staff has gotten much larger so threads are more frequently policed and monitored.
2.) We also have a lot more female moderators and as such it's no longer a mostly "boys club" (Dew was more understanding/liberal with the lot of you but even she had her limits of toleration of silliness). Threads like "Hot Thickie Women" (or whatever it's called these days) are simply not going to sit well with the female moderators because those threads objectify women, exploit them and cast them in a trashy, disrespectful light. Sooo..those threads--and their subsequent creators--are gonna get heavy focus from the female moderators. Us male mods may not be as bothered by them because we appreciate the female form. But we are only a segment of the Hype Population--we have a lot of girls posting here too. Not saying I agree with it (it's basically an online locker room for male Hypesters), but I do understand it. For example, if I was a more conservative mod and saw a bunch of female Hypesters posting half-nekkid men and it offended my sense of taste and ettiquette I'd crack down on it too. [BLACKOUT]However, since I am often without a shirt myself in real life I really have no room to talk.[/BLACKOUT]
3.) The Hype Secret Wars of 2005-2007 (ya know, the one between the users and mods that resulted in many jumping ship and the creation of LSP) I think had a
huge impact on the culture here--as well as the overall morale. Not necessarily better or worse, but I think it made a huge impact. If you subtract certain eccentric and colorful posters here from the equation you're left with a very different site. Again, not saying the results are better or worse (although I miss a number of them)--it's just a different combination of personalities here now. When that all went down there was so many conflicts, and cries of bloody war on both sides...everyone was calling foul. So as a result, people left and there were a lot of hurt feelings and frayed nerves I think...whether some choose to admit it or not.
4.) Finally, I think that when a number of users started really attacking the moderation here (and I know that there were some interesting judgement calls made that warranted some--though not all--of the uproar) some of the mods became a lot more cognizant of being uber-fair. Not that they weren't in the past, but the sensitivity was so much more heightened than before. For example, look at how a police force reacts when it comes under fire/criticiscm from the media or taxpayers who accuse them of foul play or political moves. Now they have to go
above and beyond to make sure all future "T"s are crossed and "I"s are dotted.

Hence the unbelievably expanded rules, infractions systems, and all the other stuff that was put in place to prove that we are all about being fair--and to check moderator's behavior.
So I guess the moral of the story is: Kids, be careful what you users wish for--you might just get it and a whole lot of other stuff you don't want. "Freedom" comes at a price.
I hope that answers your question; that's just the way I see it.
