MCU Box Office

Why is no one factoring in the actors strike when looking at box office performance. A lot of the marketing, hype and heavy lifting for these movies comes with the actors doing press, red carpets, events, etc. and there's been none of that for any movie since Barbie.

Traditional ad marketing can only do so much when you can't even leverage your own cast, which is a shame especially for this one given it's fully female led. That's going to have a HUGE impact on every movie releasing for the rest of the year.

But there have been movies that have done well despite few to no words from the cast members. Granted, some have had low budgets or are outliers, but Five Nights at Freddy's, Saw X (that one especially, given the ups and downs of the franchise and Spiral didn't rejuvenate the franchise) and Paw Patrol, for example, all came out during the strike and have done very well even without the actors promoting them.

Whats alarming about this is the potential boX office success of the reboots for Blade and Fantastic 4 in less than 2 years. If someone like Ant-Man who appeared in Civil War and Endgame and also headlined two solo movies prior to this, could gross less than $500 million worldwide, what is going to happen for Blade and Fantastic 4? Blade and Fantastic 4 have no Civil War/Endgame boost, and won't play a major/supporting role in the other mcu films before their first mcu film is released.
Okkkk.. i forgot how negative I sounded back in March 2023. And who knew The Marvels is going to struggle to ewrn half of Quantumania's boX office numbers. Currently less than 170 million worldwide after 2 weekends.

-Lowest opening for a Mcu film ($46 million)
-Biggest second weekend drop for any Marvel film (78.1%)
-25th biggest second weekend drop of all time

Currently in the running for
-The lowest grossing MCU film ever (North America/worldwide), taking the title from The Incredible Hulk (134m in North America, 267m worldwide) after 15 years
-First Mcu film not to gross more than $100 million in North America
-First Mcu film to be outgrossed by a Blade/Daredevil/Ghost Rider/Hulk movie in North America

Hopefully the days of everyone being excited each time a new MCU film came out can return, even if it takes many years to do it.

I think it will take a long time. Some major changes need to happen for several years.

If Disney continues to release 3 Marvel movies per year, there is a big possibility that future MCU films, would gross as low as The Marvels.

Disney+ also needs to stop relying on Marvel content.they are eXhausting the general public with the constant mcu content and at the same time, they are also training people to just wait for the new movies to come out on Disney+. That is bad news for these eXpensive Marvel movies.

Between Avengers and Endgame/NWH is the golden era of the MCU with so many billion dollar films. Wonder if they’ll ever get back to that level consistently. (hope so)

The thing is if The Marvels can go as low as less than $100 million in North America and barely crossing the $200 million mark worldwide. The other MCU films can go much lower, especially the ones that aren't tried/tested yet. So if that 2025 slate is still moving forward, if I were Disney/Marvel studio, I'd very nervous for the boX office number performances of Thunderbolts, and the reboots of Blade/Fantastic 4. Brave New World has the best brand recognition with the Captain America label/imagery but its featuring a different actor/character in the titular role, so it is also not safe for boX office underperformance/flopping.

If all those 4 perform badly in 2025. That wouldn't help their 2026 line up which includes Avengers 5 and possibly Shang-Chi 2. They need to start winning the audience back if they really want to make a profit from the neXt Avengers, that will lead to an Avengers 6 in just 1 year. Remember when Justice League underperformed? The quality of Man of Steel/Suicide Squad/BVS had an effect on the film. The Marvels isn't even one of the worst cbms yet, its became one of the biggest bombs for a superhero film. An Avengers movie/s underperforming/flopping is certainly possible if they don't play their cards right for the neXt 3 years.

Scary to think how low something very low profile that turns out to be very bad could go.

An Avengers movie flopping would be outright disaster and put the whole franchise at risk.

Yeah I'm surprised we haven't even seen anything yet from Marvel Studios/Disney to make sure another flop won't happen. Deadpool being the only 2025 MCU film, seems like a strike related move, rather than Marvel Studios spacing out these films better. The reshoots/removing filmed footage for Brave New World sound like major red flag and it seems like that film is also affected by the current quality control in Marvel Studios, that plagued phase 4 and now phase 5.

2026 isn't that far considering all the films/shows that are currently in development/pre-production/production. I am also not sure what good it would do if they delayed both Avengers again, when less guaranteed projects to succeed at the boX office, Blade and Thunderbolts are still happening first. Surely, more people are going to be eXcited for a new Avengers rather than Thunderbolts/Blade which would probably flop if Marvel doesn't bounce back in less than 2 years.

Like someone said in the past, it takes years to get the goodwill of the public but it doesn't take much for people to suddenly lose interest. From Gotg3's $300 million domestic/$800 million worldwide to Marvels' $83 million domestic/$202 million worldwide in just a few months... and Marvel Studios have yet to give us their BVS/Fant4stic/Morbius. Just terrible.

So those Deadpool Wolverine tracking figures are looking great. Would be nice to see a CBM do big numbers again.
I think Joker and Venom would open well. But I don't really care about those, the way I care about the MCU. Kraven would likely flop, but the holidays should help it outgross Madame Web and maybe Morbius too.

Captain America without Chris Evans, I can't see it opening over 80 million in North America and we know how front-loaded most Marvel movies are, so if it opened lower than 80 million and the reviews aren't good, it might not get the average multiplier for MCU movies. I think it would open around 60 to 70 million and might struggle to hit 150 million (North America).

Thunderbolts should perform a little bit better than The Marvels because of the summer season. The Fall Guy, which flopped and opened the summer movie season this year already outgrossed The Marvels in North America. Both Brave New World and Thunderbolts should at least hit the $100 million mark in North America. Who knows about the worldwide gross.

The Fantastic 4...I feel like for superhero film/Marvel fans, this is easily the most anticipated Marvel movie next year if there's no Spider-Man movie in 2025. But I don't think the general public are interested yet to this film. So the marketing would need to be really good like attention-grabbing trailers/promos, the movie must be above average and they should imply a 100-day streaming arrival, to maximize box office numbers.

Next year should really be interesting at the box office.

They will still have some big successes, but nothing like this. When the reboot happens in the future, they can create tangible excitement that possibly rivals this again, starting over with the characters people really care about, but I doubt they ever rival this sustained level of box office success for nearly a decade. Its getting too expensive for everyone. That shouldn't be the goal anyway. Start making better movies and stop relying on old templates/formulas that worked in the past. Bring some new creative inspiration into the mix, a different approach in general. That's what they can actually control, the intention to make better films going forward. Start winning the audience back one film at a time.
