MCU Thor Respect Thread (Spoilers!!!)

While Captain America is my favorite superhero I would say that Thor is 2nd. The arc he has gone through in all the MCU movies has been great. As with many adaptations Thor is way more powerful in the comics. However seeing Thor having a better representation of his powers and abilities in Ragnarok and in IW has been truly great to see. Yes his entrance in Wakanda is blazingly awesome and when he jumps into the air and lands with the massive lightning blast its like-To Thanos and minions= Welcome to loserville A-holes!!
The issue I have going forward is how in interviews that Feige keeps saying that Captain Marvel will be the most powerful hero in the MCU. If thats the case where does that leave Thor? I have issue with that. In the comics Thor has been one of if not the most powerful hero in the 616 comic universe. Now he will be outclassed by Captain Marvel? I just dont see that as right. Its like Thor is being relegated to 2nd tier again. And no I am not sexist or anything. How can you do right by Thor and then take it all away again?

There are several problems with Feige declaring that Danvers is the most powerful hero in the MCU. First off, he has violated the "Show, Don't Tell" principle that ought to guide storytelling. The audience hasn't even seen her in action yet, but we have witnessed Thor (and Hulk) not only demonstrate their power but also grow stronger over several films. We've gone on a long journey with Thor as he has earned and accepted his role as King of Asgard and All-Father. Danvers should have a similar journey, as the audience would have time to become familiar with her as she proved her power.


The second problem is that, as you said, Captain Marvel is nowhere near being the most powerful superhero in the comics. She has a massive powerset, yes, but she isn't on the level of Thor or the Hulk. Giving her a power boost for the movies is fine but one could argue that almost every other top-tier hero has been nerfed in the MCU. It feels as if Feige felt the need to place Danvers above everyone else in order to automatically make her the Avengers' leader. That is not only unnecessary, it also slights the other heroes.

Thank you for the response. I am looking forward to Captain Marvel very much but she should not be the most powerful. I loved Thor being a badass in this film. I hope Feige can explain this and not tick off fans like us that appreciate Thor and the other heroes.

It may be that I'm biased because I'm a big fan of Thor (both in the comics and the movies) and I like that he's finally getting the hype that he deserves, but at the same time the last thing I want is for Feige and co to make Carol into a Mary Sue type that is automatically better and stronger than everyone else just because they're trying to overcompensate for not having a female-lead movie until this late in the game. As a woman, give me a flawed and interesting Carol Danvers that proves her mettle over an automatically perfect, more powerful than everyone Carol Danvers any day.

It also reeks of "Look, this new toy is bigger, badder, and even shinier than the others toys so come play with it" type of marketing which is pretty cliche' and unnecessary.

You summed up my concerns with 'Mary Sue' --- there's why I've been uncomfortable with those descriptions and you nailed it... wow, you think what you have enjoyed and invested in for a decade was cool? Well, check this out, your guys are nothing compared to this!

Thor has finally gone from being underpowered to showing what he can really do, the other characters have grown into their roles and strengths, and to have that undermined would be pretty sad. For me, it would be devaluing my MCU experience so far and distance me from Captain Marvel (who I really want to enjoy)... but I will always be there for more Thor, even if he is not the most powerful.

The character arc is the reason people choose a character. The reason why Thor became one of the most liked characters in the MCU is because he finally developed a character arc.

What if she starts of really powerful. Defeats Thanos but something happens that weakens her? Then in the captain marvel sequel we see her trying to adapt and find her place in the world now that she isnt as powerful.

You almost would have thought Feige would have learned something from SW: TFA and them making Rey so powerful so fast.

I dont have a problem with Rey becoming powerful almost right away. The issue with Thor and Captain Marvel has to do with the source material and how its represented in the films. In the comics Thor is one of if not the most power hero in the 616 Marvel comic universe. With him being an badass (and rightfully so) in Infinity War they established Thor as being very powerful. All his feats have already been well represented in this thread and it was great to see as a Thor fan and Avengers fan. Now its like lets take that away with Captain Marvel. What?! Plus I hope to see even greater feats out of the Hulk in Avengers 4. But nerfing them to introduce Captain Marvel.. that just does not work for me.

I think i found some of the inspiration behind a few Thor moments in Infinity War. For example:

A weakened Thor being subdued by Ebony Maw with the metal debris from the asgardian spaceship. Check out the "Neutron Star" names being dropped here too.

Also when Thor lights up the furnaces in Nidavellir, it looks like something taken out of the time when Thor used his strength to reverse the World Engine.

I think what made Thor the stand-out character in IW (after Thanos) was a combination of:

- the strong emotional beats like the scene with Rocket talking talking about his personal losses,

- the advancement of his story arc that ties in with previous movies (losing Loki, forging a new weapon after losing Mjolnir, etc.),

- and coupled with great visuals / execution, e.g. arriving in Wakanda in spectacular fashion.

It really couldn’t have been done any better. That scene with Rocket was a great touch.

IW was terribly convoluted but they did Thor right.

About the power levels, I don't get bothered too much; I understand that they want make CM the most powerful (even though she's nowhere close in the comics). However, I'm curious to see how this is gonna be shown. It's hard to imagine a hero being that much more powerful than the guy who could've stopped Thanos by himself!
