Message boards... on the whole

So now that I'm posting here again, I'd like to start off with a rousing, lively, intelligent discussion. Or something.

Do message boards contribute anything to your life? Are they just a momentary distraction, or do they mean anything more to you? Do you feel you've developed meaningful friendships with people just based on interaction on a message board, or is that impossible? Do you meet the people you talk to on these boards? Any horror stories on that subject?

I guess I like the idea that I'm instantly linked to all these people who share a similar sense of humour or interests. Especially when the interests are of the more niche-y variety.

Message boards bring me entertainment, and news. I have message board friends, but they're not really...close friends. I don't ever see myself meeting anyone from here on purpose. I rarely even get on AIM.

Yeah, I come here to find out some info and discuss it. I also go on here if I have nothing better to do.

Get info and talk it out is the main reason. It's also cool to talk to people who are as hardcore, or sometimes even more, than me on certain things, seeing as I don't know a ton of people who share the same intrests (though i know a good number).

Plus it's a fun thing to do with my free time as I like the sense of humor on these boards. Although my time on here will probably decrease with school and work, I still enjoy my time on here and try to stop by occasionally.

Message boards are fun. I make fun of people who spend time on message boards even though I do, I guess I like to poke fun at myself. I met a few interesting cool people, and I met one person on here who I ended up hanging out with and became friends with in real life. I get updated on comic news, movie news, and all around other news about various subjects. Not to mention I've done several trade/buying with people for supplies. Overall, they can be fun.

Good way to kill time when I'm bored. They're also a place to talk to a lot of people at once when I'm not able to hang out with anyone in person, for whatever reason.

Message boards give me information, entertainment and let me marvel at the sheer ignorance of society at times. I only really keep up with 3, but rarely post on any. Actually I think I post here more than any of the others, and I don't even post here that often.
