Miami Vice

I wouldn't be surprised if they release the original version on HD first, and then a couple months later, they'll do a Peter Jackson and release the Director's Cut.

Unfortunately, it's how it has, is and always will work. :(:(

I dunno about always. I think there's the offset chance that someday the whole "order films to your tv" thing (think ON DEMAND) could evolve into something many years down the road, which could re-balance the whole DVD thing. But, yeah......always is certainly possible. They do make a lot of money this way, though....so, you kinda can't blame them for exploiting it.

Still sucks to have it happen though.

lol.

I keep wishing that eventually, some studio will just not hold back and just cram a good DVD with tons of stuff. Just tons. I hear the James Bond redux DVDs have done that, which is good. But most of those films are like 40 years old.....so, takes some time.

I think the whole Sequel thing counts too. If Vice gets a second go around, you just know that a month or two before it's release a Special Edition Miami Vice DVD will hit. It's like another way to promote a film now.

Well I hope they both...

I wonder, all that practice Farrell and Foxx did, practicing drug deals and talking with the DEA and retired Vice cops....I think we saw some of that stuff on the HBO special.....that'd better be on the DVD. I mean, it looked like pretty cool stuff.

Then again....this is just a single disc release, right? No 2-discs this time around.

Damn my anticipated review went unnoticed,i thought that was why CBB kept bumping this:csad::oldrazz::cwink:

Man definitely left it open for a sequel and i'd love to see where he would take the characters and how he would keep the narrative tight with the first movie while expanding

Yeah, I meant to reply to your review, man.....but sometimes this thread can reallllly disappear into the midst of pages. This section is like a train that keeps on movie, lol.

I think you were pretty much spot on. Some of the dialogue might have been a bit off putting, I think in a way it does the same thing that THE WIRE does, which is use street talk/lingo that ppl who don't know about can get lost on.

But, I think it was all about the realism that Mann was trying to get to. The movie doesn't ever seem to glam it up or make it look specatcular. It's gritty, realistic and serious.

And yeah, the movie is open for a sequel.....but not neccessarily to follow up what happened in the first one. It felt like the end of a Miami Vice episode, actually. Where things are kinda left done, while there's still a chance at that villian returning and stuff.

And, something I think would be very welcomed is keeping the next film all in Miami. I would have liked more of Miami in this one, which is actually one of the few gripes I've got with the film. But, making it more "back to basics" type stuff would be cool.

Now....I wonder, if the studio releasing the DVD's like this....single disc only, and with 2 versions and all that.....anyone think this is a sign that the studio is confident that it will sell? Unless they didn't think it'd make money on DVD, I think they'd probably just go all out and shove these DVD's with everything they got. I know the movie made quite a good bunch of money at the BO.

I'm just really pissed off about that shoot-out being left off of the DVD. I love me a good MM shoot-out.

I think they're going to sit on us and make us wait for that one. Bastards.

It's almost become like a legendary myth by now. I'm beginning to wonder if it actually exists.

I don't know where you guys stand, but I feel this is Micheal Manns worst movie

I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't by any means definitive Mann

I dunno.....I don't think it's his best film, but I don't think it's his worst.

I mean, Ali was good I thought....but that might fall below Vice for some. The there's LA Takedown.....atleast IMD credits him with that, and I've never seen it....but look kinda bad.

Says how high you hold Mann, though that you can still enjoy it. That's pretty cool, I think.

Of the five I've seen...

1. Heat
2. Miami Vice
3. The Insider
4. Collateral
5. Ali

Although MV might slowly climb its way past Heat. Dunno.

I can't wait until the DC comes out on Tuesday.
I actually thought it came out last week, so I was asking all of the mall people.
I ended up buying Supes Returns because it wasn't there.

Miami Vice was pretty good. I can't wait to see the Director's cut on HD-DVD. Already ordered it so it should be coming in a few days now.

And I don't know why The Insider rarely gets mentioned as one of Mann's best films.

Holy crap, I forgot. That's a great movie.

Don't know if you guys know or not, but the Director's Cut has more bonus material.

heh no doubt,im surprised it's still going so long after release

That's true, cop speak and jargon is a bit leftfield but some of it just felt like it was trying to be hip at the cost of sounding credible

But, I think it was all about the realism that Mann was trying to get to. The movie doesn't ever seem to glam it up or make it look specatcular. It's gritty, realistic and serious.

I agree, the subject matter is handled with respect and there are consequences shown for what goes down

And yeah, the movie is open for a sequel.....but not neccessarily to follow up what happened in the first one. It felt like the end of a Miami Vice episode, actually. Where things are kinda left done, while there's still a chance at that villian returning and stuff.

I just got the feeling when the main man got away that the chase for him would be something that could continue into a second movie, obviously we would see what became of Trudy and how that effects Tubbs plus they could do something more with Isabella if they wanted although it seemed fairly final

And, something I think would be very welcomed is keeping the next film all in Miami. I would have liked more of Miami in this one, which is actually one of the few gripes I've got with the film. But, making it more "back to basics" type stuff would be cool.

Well they did go out of Miami in the series from time to time but i agree, more of the Miami scene and the nightlife should shown in the sequel with the focus being on what to do with the ppl actually running the drugs in Miami

Does it come with the regular version too? I heard there was an HD-DVD/ DVD combo or something.

Under the radar I think. Mann seems to be one of those Director's that is usually ahead of the curve somehow, and alot of people are still catching up, ya know? I think it just gets forgotten for some really odd reason.

Well, yeah....the extra scenes that are added. But, does it have extra features or anything?

Btw, I was checking the features...I think the "real life undercover" stuff that Farrell and Foxx did are going to be on it. I'm hoping it is, looks like interesting stuff.

heh no doubt,im surprised it's still going so long after release

lol...yeah, been a few times where I've bumped it and it was somewhere in the far back numbers. I was suprised to see that it was actually up and going since BEFORE the release. Alot before, actually. This thread is pretty much a relic I think. But, since it's the only Vice thread we got...makes sense.

That's true, cop speak and jargon is a bit leftfield but some of it just felt like it was trying to be hip at the cost of sounding credible

No doubt. There certainly was a coolness to these characters, and really....Crockett and Tubbs.....no matter how serious they're supposed to be, them being cool is part of the deal too. Part of the style and all.

But yeah, some of the lines were just there to sound cool. I can think of a few, like "We get down if the play calls for it, bud." or "Smooth. That's how we do it." Or "They didn't do the time with us, they ain't doing the crime with us."

All in one scene, actually...in the meet and greet with Yero.

I agree, the subject matter is handled with respect and there are consequences shown for what goes down

Yeah, agreed.

I just got the feeling when the main man got away that the chase for him would be something that could continue into a second movie, obviously we would see what became of Trudy and how that effects Tubbs plus they could do something more with Isabella if they wanted although it seemed fairly final

Exactly. I get the feeling that in some way, X3 was trying to do something like that. Keeping the door open while still leavin things somewhat finished....even though clearly, there's stuff left undone.

But, I think that's what I liked about the ending really. It could go one way, with tying up loose ends or go another route with a different story and it could still turn out good.

Well they did go out of Miami in the series from time to time but i agree, more of the Miami scene and the nightlife should shown in the sequel with the focus being on what to do with the ppl actually running the drugs in Miami

Well, really....this movie is inspired by the season 1 episodes "Smuggler's Blues". I mean, imagine my surprise when I read criticism saying that they never left Miami.....ever. But, after checking episode synopsis....Smuggler's Blues sounds a hell of alot like the basic idea behing the movie. I've seen most of the series, but I did miss that episode, though.

Supposedly, Mann has said that he wants to do a sequel (which would be his first ever, I believe) and that it would all take place in Miami. I hope it gets greenlit. Probably will, too- since all the major players want to make it happen. Mann, Farrell and Foxx all want to do another one. That's alot of good weight, I think.

Maybe it needed a few gunfights. Then everyone and their dog would be raving about it.
