Tom Dey to Direct 2012

Director Tom Dey is reteaming with his Failure to Launch screenwriters Tom Astle and Matt Ember on the broad family action-adventure 2012 for Paramount Pictures' Nickelodeon Movies.
Dey will develop with an eye to direct, while Ember and Astle have signed deals to pen the script.

The storyline revolves a family who goes on vacation in December 2012, just as the Mayan calendar is coming to a close. Over the decades, many have prophesized that the world will end when the ancient calendar ceases on Dec. 21, 2012.

Dey is in talks to direct another film before tackling other projects, 2012 included.

Astle and Ember penned the script for Warners' upcoming Get Smart and are writing the direct-to-DVD spinoff Get Smarter: Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control.

Michael Bay seems to love his "Transformers" and "The Island" screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman as the pair are already at work on Bay's next film - "2012: The War For Souls."

Talking with Rotten Tomatoes, Orci spoke of adapting famous alien abductee Whitley Strieber's book into a Warner Bros. tentpole film - "It is his latest theory of what's going to go down in 2012 based on the Mayan calendar and based on factual astronomical convergences are going to happen on that day" says Orci.

The book will only provide a basic framework, as the screenwriters will address the needs of a film before the needs of Strieber's theories - "We really like the initial concept. We always try to be extremely free with what the dictates of the live action story need to be. If it ends up being extremely similar to the book, great. But we don't stick to anything just because it's there. We question everything."

Yeah, I would agree. And when they say they're going to address the needs of the film before the theories that are presented, it sort of defeats the purpose and makes me question whether they just don't grasp the theories Strieber is putting forth and are therefore going to go off and just do their own thing instead (a concept that frightens me because their take on the subjects covered in "The Island" and "Transformers" are simplistic at best).

I'm a big Bay fan but it seems like WB are approaching this wrong,it should be some $30M thingie if they are gonna follow the book closely.
