Fantasy Mike Flanagan's Adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower'

‘The Dark Tower’ Series Adaptation Not Going Forward At Amazon – Deadline

Deadline has heard that executives "felt like the pilot was not on the level of other large-scope elevated genre series the streamer has in production/pre-production like Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of the Rings."

Ffs. I cant believe Amazon wont just go forward with new scriptwriters and a new showrunner. Surely Amazon can see the potential and wont just dismiss the properties potential.

O Discordia

I seriously question if the pilot was lackluster. Great cast and crew they assembled. But let's face it, it is an esoteric property, and Amazon is already in deep with Wheel of Time and LotR. Probably smart of them in a business sense not to compete against themselves too much.

As a fan, though, this just sucks. Hurts. I had been following this so closely and now will we ever get to see this pilot, at least? Ugh.

Article says the producers are gonna shop the scripts around to see if they can get someone else to pick it up.

There are other streamers than these.

Should’ve just done a straight forward adaptation of the first book. Why the **** is this so hard to grasp? Incredibly disappointing.

Everything I heard about this sounded lame but I kept an open mind. Not surprised about this. Starting with a young Roland is idiotic. Just do The Gunslinger right off the bat.

They should have made a two hour Gunslinger adaption. Give it a $50 million - $75 million budget. Do a limited theatrical release and a simultaneous Amazon Prime release. If the reception is good then do the rest of the books as a series.

I figured Amazon would pass on it because there's been silence for quite a while. Can't say I'm surprised Amazon found it lackluster because Stephen Hopkins is not someone I'd hire to direct my pilot...

Hopkins' stuff is a bit all over the place. He did the 24 pilot which was a huge hit. Californication piIot. Won a Gemini for his direction on Thorne. From his movies, I really liked Blown Away and The Ghost and the Darkness, personally. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is one of the more acclaimed TV movies ever (pre-streaming movies), won a ton of Emmys, won the Golden Globe for its category, and nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

But then he also has terrible stuff to his name like the Lost in Space movie and The Reaping. And also some okay mediocrity with stuff like Race and House of Lies. And then whatever it is you think about Predator 2 or Elm Street 5, ha.

One thing with him is you really never know what you're gonna get in terms of style and quality. I was very curious to see what he would do with The Dark Tower. Now, I guess, we'll never know.

[Cue gif of all the times Henry Cavill's Witcher said "F**k."]

This news is really disappointing. I was wondering if something was up because we hadn't heard **** in so long. I was really looking forward to this. So infuriating that we've had so many false starts with The Dark Tower over the years. But hey, we got one s***ty cash grab movie by Sony, right? Ugh.

My God. This week we lost The Dark Tower and Watchmen, but found out that they're REBOOTING WALKER TEXAS RANGER.

We really do live in hell. I blame Trump for all of this. The world is f***ed.

I actually wouldn’t advise hard against that. The first book is a bit slow, and not all that much happens. The series picks up with the drawing of the Three, and I would start there. Since flashbacks play such a heavy role already, just treat the first book in flashbacks.

I wouldn’t say we lost Watchmen. We got an amazing season that ended on top instead of dragging the story out when they had no ideas.

I will always support the latter over the former. Always.

Yeah, I just mentioned Watchmen as a bit of hyperbole. I'm okay with it not continuing (though I think it definitely could have) if Lindelof doesn't feel he has anywhere further to go with it. But I'm legit angry about this show getting canned. It's frustrating that we've had SO many Stephen King adaptations--even some short stories that honestly weren't worth getting adapted--and yet all we have to show for his "magnum opus" is a cheap, trashy movie that probably shouldn't have even been released in theaters.

HBO is being stupid about The Watchmen. Actinf as if Damon ****ing Lindelof is the only person capable of making a season of Watchmen. Replace his ass and make a season 2.

Isn’t he the reason why it turned out so well?

Why do people want to run something into the ground. He obviously set out for a beginning, middle and end. Talk about extending something just to extend it. Be happy.

We could use the same reasoning with Alan Moore. DC was being idiotic for waiting to write more Watchmen! Just get someone else....
Except when they did that, it was fairly lackluster.

Stories don’t have to continue just because they were good. I honestly wished Heroes had ended after season 1, because what we got after was so rough it nearly soured my view of the first season.

Really? They're rebooting a show where the whole appeal was its star? I mean, if they're making a show about 80-year-old Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking bad guys, I'm all in. But if they're not, what's the point?

Jared Paddlewacky or whatever his name is needs a post-Supernatural gig. But I have to say, he’s a good fit. I don’t know if he can kick people as well as Chuck Norris can, but at least they managed to find someone with the same lack of charisma and acting talent.

Wow, it's even worse than I thought. That Jared guy seems like a nice enough guy. And I kinda feel for him for being mostly known as the unfunny Winchester brother and the unfunny Gilmore Girls character. But to give him his own show? Sounds like a train wreck bound to happen.

He's a pretty big fellow. So, if he doesn't have the ability to imitate Chuck's martial arts skills, maybe they should go unapologetically the other way and just have him play Walker as an clumsy brute who relies on pure strength.

LOL yeah I’ve heard he’s a really good dude but he’s just the epitome of bland in everything I’ve seen him in. I dated someone for a while who tried to get me into Supernatural but my God, that was torture. I can’t fathom how a show so mediocre has lasted so long.

Fair enough I think. That movie was terrible. What a shame though because the books are wonderful

Not good news at all. I hope this series gets its due one day and wipes away the memory of the film.

For all we know this pilot could be worse than the movie and would've tarnished the brand even worse, so better to kill it now before it gets out there and cancelled after one season.

Try again in a couple of years with a series or movie. They just need the right director with a clear creative vision. Mike Flanagan seems to get Stephen King.

Right now, I think we'll be lucky if this book gets adapted into a serialised podcast.

Well that's really **** news, these books just get no luck when it comes to being adapted it seems .
