Horror Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist | Blumhouse

The Exorcist has so many knock off and demonic possesion inspired movies that it will be hard to
I almost feel like the most promising sign that he’s not going to just regurgitate all the same **** as the other Exorcist sequels/Exorcist-inspired films is looking at what he did with The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher.

Didn’t really adapt either in a straight forward way (and after a certain point, horror sequels are at least 90% adaptations of the original films anyway) and twisted both Shirley Jackson’s book and various works of Poe to craft his own narrative. And if he’s gonna take those kinds of liberties with stories that haven’t been beaten like a dead horse, I feel safe in saying that “Oh look, another possessed adolescent girl” probably won’t be the crux of his film.
I agree. We already have Exorcist prequels, sequels, tv spin offs and a number of other demonic possession Exorcist influenced movies.

Evil dead rise did the demonic possession family drama thing pretty well.

I feel like the Exorcists biggest strength was the vibe it had.

There's even one coming out this weekend.

Your Exorcist has been described as a “radical new take.” That’s a bold promise. Where does the confidence come from?

We aren’t making this easy on ourselves. (Laughs.) But I’ve always felt that there’s no point in going into a franchise or into a property that monolithic unless there’s something new you can bring. I chased The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something that I could add. This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia. I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.
Not built on nostalgia, ehh…?

Bold claim for him to say this will be his scariest film ever.
Hoping for something unsettling & unnerving, something that stays with you after you've seen it, rather than jump scares.

Flanagan’s thoughts on the only good (cinematic) follow-up to The Exorcist could provide some interesting perspective on what he may do.

I’m going to go crazy trying to remember what it was about, but I feel like just recently I read about a possession-themed project that the studio didn’t want to involve a possession.

I don’t think it was The Exorcist, but I really can’t recall…

Makes you think that Doctor Sleep was such a lucky happenstance that it even got made.

Like I get The Omen series isn't as widely popular as The Exorcist series, but everyone should look at what Arkasha Stevenson did and got away with in The First Omen.
