Honestly, he's a child actor. Expectations for his acting ability are not high. Nor should they be. He needs to be passable. No one expects him to make or break the movie.

Perhaps they are simply establishing the Connors Clan in the first movie in prep for the Lizard being the villain down the line. Just saying it could be.

Possible, but even I'm willing to admit that this seems to be another nail in the coffin. Not the final one, but damn close.
