Modelling and Painting

Now's the time. While you have extra time on your hands... :cwink:

Well, I got everything C3PO related finished. I've just gotta wait a couple of days for everything to dry and set. Then he will take up residence alongside a Sideshow 1/6 scale R2D2...

I hope that my other materials arrive soon, I want to finish K.I.T.T. :D

I need to get back into modeling I have been away far too long I have a model of the NTE (not the enterprise) Protector from Galaxy Quest what is neat about the model is the section of the ship that detached from the ship in the movie does the same on the model and it is attached to the whole ship using mini magnets a nice touch.

When you do stuff like this is it all just what comes with the kit or do you use references and the like to get more detail and color matches etc. and get supplimentary materials to finish as you want it?

I'll always look at reference material to see if I can get whatever I am working on to look more authentic... With regards to C3PO I did the inside of the hands with some black detailing because Anthony Daniels wore black gloves with metallic finger pieces over that, and I wanted to capture that look.
Sometimes I might do a little something that is not necessarily screen accurate, but I feel that it makes the model look more interesting. But I'll never do anything that really takes away from the original. Just enough to put my own stamp on it.
If that makes sense... :D

For example with K.I.T.T, even though the instructions say to paint the roof and rear windows smoke grey, that didn't seem right to me. In photos from the show the over head glass panels seem to have a black tint.
So I've bought some transparent black paint (that seems to not make sense!) and I will airbrush on a tint to those windows, because I think it will look way better and can still be seen through.
And, the model doesn't come with door windows, so I am going to cut some 0.005" clear styrene sheet to fit to those openings and see if that looks better.

Sorry, this post was way longer than I thought it would be... :cwink:

No need to apologize. I'm sure I'm like a lot of fans. I marvel at the detail and effort folks like you put into these sort of things. As should be expected after seeing your cosplay skills.

They’re all growed up!
Any others have to be on a (very) short leash... :oldrazz:

Still waiting for materials, so lets get on with something else that won’t take too much time to do... :yay:

It’s 3D printed, but not by me, it was a surprise prezzie from my better half... :D
I see lots of sanding and filling in my near future!

in K.I.T.T news, I have sourced a ready made scanner that will fit my model and only costs $18.
Delivery to the UK pushes that up quite a bit, but hey ho. It’s still cheaper than what it would cost for me to build one...

In case you were wondering... Here is where the modelling magic happens, in my workshop. Converted from a leaky shed! :D

Might I add that it is not always so tidy... :yay:

A bit broke off while I was sanding...

2020-05-13 07.19.13-1.jpg
so, I filled and waited for it to set...

2020-05-13 09.11.05-1.jpg Sanded and primed...

Everything that needs a silver base coat now has one... :D

Metallic black for the "metal" part of the handle grip and gun metal grey for the blaster nozzle. I think it looks better than a silver or lighter steel colour... And it's my blaster so there! :oldrazz:

I'm working on the handle grips and I have a ways to go yet, so nothing to report yet...

So, this is my start point with the pistol grips... They have to end up looking like wood.

A montage will follow at some point once I figure out how to do it and indeed, do it...

There are some great looking pieces in here. But speaking of modeling, I think I’ll quit my job and become an Instagram model.

Just remember the current 2m distancing rule though... :funny:

Here we go, start to finish...

Naked plastic... :cwink:
2020-05-12 10.41.55-1.png

Sanded, orange filler primer, then grey primer applied
2020-05-12 16.54.58-1.png

My base coat of colour, chocolate brown with some dark red and a splash of yellow

Each layer of colour after drying had a matt clear coat applied. When this was dry, another layer of the same paint mix (but made progressively darker colour) was applied.

Do it again... I forgot to take pictures after each application of colour. Sorry!
2020-05-13 13.24.20.jpg
And after four layers of gradually darkened colour alternated with matt clear coats, a final wash of black applied all over and into the grooves. Once that all dried, a final layer of matt clear coat.
Yes, that picture below is when it was still wet! :D

Below is pretty much the final result. It's weird, even though I did exactly the same on each grip? The one on the left is a tad darker than the other. But I guess that adds to the authenticity as cuts of wood are never exactly the same shade even when taken from the same area. That's what I am going with, it's better than admitting I am incompetent!

Is it as good as I had hoped? Nah, but I'd give it an 8.5/10
A 9/10 if you pushed me... :yay:

That'll do for now. :woo:
