Damon a Factor in New Eastwood Drama
Source: Variety
June 4, 2008

Matt Damon has committed to star in Human Factor, joining Morgan Freeman in the Clint Eastwood-directed film for Warner Bros. Pictures, says Variety.

Shooting will begin early next year in South Africa.

Damon will play rugby star Francois Pienaar, who created, with Nelson Mandela, an event that gave whites and blacks in South Africa a common cause to rally around as the country was trying to heal from the wounds of apartheid.

The Anthony Peckham-scripted drama is an adaptation of John Carlin's book "The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World."

The role Morgan Freeman was born to play. The question is, with Freeman in the lead role, who does the narration? :p

Photos have surfaced from the set of The Human Factor, the Nelson Mandella biopic directed by Clint Eastwood that is currently shooting on location in South Africa. The pics show co-star Matt Damon outfitted as Francois Pienaar, captain of the all-white 1995 South African rugby team that took the World Cup
and “capped Mandela’s miraculous 10-year effort to bring 43 million South Africans together in an enduring bond.” Morgan Freeman, who is co-producing with Eastwood, will play Mandella primarily during the years following his 23-year imprisonment, in which he served a term as president after the fall of apartheid. Set for release in December, the film is based on the book Playing the Enemy by John Carlin. Photos via TB&U. One more after the jump.

Also of note, Eastwood’s previous directorial effort (and possibly his last as an actor), 2008’s Gran Torino, continues to hold at the box office in lieu of being blatantly shut-out of the Academy Awards and dividing /Film’s staff. As of yesterday, it has taken in a massive $142 million plus, the biggest domestic gross of his career.

Clint is directing this movie?????????

Cool. I know he and Freeman are great friends. I think this is great role to showcase Freeman's acting talent.

Geez, Matt Damon could have put on some weight, Francois Pienaar wasn't that thin a player.

They still making this? I thought this project was dead.

Seriously can't wait for this, Clint and Freeman are both favourites of mine. :D

I didn't realize they'd already started filming this, It's the perfect role for Morgan Freeman and another string to Damon's bow.

I can't wait til Mandela 2: He Runs The Country Into The Ground And Creates A Total Hell On Earth And The Media Ignores It

I'm actually really happy that I'm not the only one on the boards who doesn't buy into the folk hero/martyr vision of Mandela.

Shekar Kapur is a friggin moron for not getting up off his ass and directing this piece... he had over 15 damn years to get this movie off the ground and now he's lost it... I'm so glad Eastwood is doing the film now, Kapur is so frustrating sometimes... it's like he commits to a project then doesn't do **** about it
