Morgan Freeman is Mandela

Of course they do. They wouldn't release films like this in March.

I can understand when studios release movies on specific dates for financial reasons . Especially with blockbusters , certain dates are very important because of the cost involved
HOwever with these oscar type movies , i just feel that te movie is made purely for the oscars . Exactly what Harvey Weinstein has been doing pretty much his entire career.

There's no denying it, and I doubt you'll find anyone in any movie studio who would deny it either that the last three months are for their 'Oscar' movies. Is it right? No, there are 9 other months in the year filled with perfectly good movies that are just as deserving of recognition but because of the release date won't get a look in.

Exactly. That's why i am happy that they've decided to nominate 10 pictures instead of 5. Makes other flicks that have been released in the year equally deserving instead the oscar bait.

I think people are overestimating the Academy's ability to change it's ways. I'm gonna put money that the 10 nominees will still come from Sept onwards. As far as I'm concerned the status quo will remain and those 5 extra spots are simply there to make it look as if more films from throughout the year are a chance.

Who's playing Chester Williams?

McNeil Hendricks^

I had to write a report on this movie for my Leadership class. Well, it was extra credit,.. :p

No, they don't.

Because most of the time if they had any decent shot their studio would be looking to release in Oscar season...

You've got your Summer blockbusters and then your Oscar Season... and then in the few weeks leading into "Oscar season" you've got the horrifying empty void which is where Meet the Spartans, Babylon AD and Disaster Movie get released...

I liked DiCaprio's accent better, but that's going by the whole movie. Case is still out with Damon. And I can't imagine another actor playing Mandela, but that has to be the most unconvincing impersonation I have seen from a 30 second spot.
Personally, I thought Damon's Pienaar was spot on.

And to all those saying this was just Oscar hunting tripe... bear in mind Clint barely skimmed the surface... if he really wanted to pull at the Academy's heartstrings he could have delved deeper into the Chester Williams story, where many were questioning his role in the side (he came into the side replacing an injured teammate after the opening test of the WC against my Wallabies) and whether he was just a political emblem...

...he then came out of injury and scored FOUR tries against Western Samoa in the quarter final.

Although in the spirit of Hollywood they also glossed over the fact that half the Kiwi team had been suffering from food poisoning leading up to the final courtesy of a mystery waitress called Suzie...

Her movie comes out next fall... :hehe:

As a New Zealander and supporter of the All Blacks that 95 World Cup Final was one helluva nailbiter. Despite a number of the players suffering from food poisoning at least we still managed to take the match into Extra Time. Still laughing at the actors who played Jonah Lomu, Andrew Mehrtens and to a lesser extent, Walter Little. :p

Speaking of the so called Suzy movie, it would make me laugh if Clint Eastwood made a companion film depicting the NZ point of view ala Letters from Iwo Jima to Flags of Our Fathers. ;)

Hahahaha

You also don't need to say "as a New Zealander" and "and supporter of the All Blacks" both together. One denotes the other.

<Insert your standard sheep-related sex joke from an Australian to a New Zealander here>

You Kiwis still going on about that 'food poisoning' scandal? Some things never change. Was it food poisoning that screwed the All Blacks over in the 1999, 2003, and 2007 RWC? ;)
