Action-Adventure Mortal Kombat 2

Yeah, I cannot agree that Johnny sucks in MK95. That moment where they pump in the music from his fake movie, Gore crushes his glasses, and Johnny says "Alright, let's dance" before split punching him the balls....that's all time awesome. It's an amazing setup and payoff. So well crafted in a way nothing in the newer movie was

Yep, I love that scene. I honestly never cared for Cage as a character until I saw the movie. I always played Scorpion or Sub-Zero in the games and ignored Johnny, but he’s great in the movie.

I wish :

No a minor role for LiuKang. Its already scandalous we dont have love interest between Kitana/luiKang

Kano will have his metal face eyed. Too scandalous if he wouldnt have his thing after 2 movies

Hope Noob and QuanChi secretly work for Shinnok.

Raiden vs Kahn remake. We know Raiden beats him in earthrealm, but in Outworld he is weak. In original games, no one can beat Raiden on earth except Onaga. the deadly alliance defeated him indeed, as the 2 sorcerers were powered up by quantity of souls
About Noob vs Scorpion, fortunately the movie will give us this fight! In original games they never fought. Noob stayed in shadow in MK2 MK3 storyline, Shinnok just ordered him to spy events of earthwarriors vs outworld.
MK4 , fight against earthwarriors in Shinnok's army
MK5 (tournament édition) after Shinnok defeat, he joined Kahn's army
MK6 (Deception) he wanted to building his own army
he never seeked revenge against Scorpion all along

Crazy to think that we were way more progressive in 1995 for this series lol

gotta give paul ws anderson credit for giving robin shou the lead.

having a relatively unknown asian actor as a lead in a big american film is rare even now - back in the 90s?
probably insane.

but they still have not topped this casting. still the best liu kang we got.

i-know-its-probably-just-me-but-i-would-love-to-have-robin-v0-o1p6pbdthspa1.jpg

I will agree that Liu Kang should have been the lead, and I think that had Johnny Cage not been our fish-out-of-water for this sequel, I think that this probably could've been Liu Kang's time to shine.

More so considering both Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn are alive, and if we're finally getting a tournament, then Liu Kang needs to best one or both of them.

Just a random thing but I watched Fight or Flight yesterday and now I’m just imagining Josh Hartnett playing an older Johnny Cage. That would have been awesome. I’m sure Urban will be fine but damn something like that could have been way better.

So much of the first movie rocks, but then Cole is just there to undermined it. Especially with Liu being right there, being awesome, ready to be the main character.

New one looks like a lot of fun. Just kill Cole early and act like he never existed!

I don’t want Cole to be cut mainly because Lewis Tan can bring so much more to the table. I’ve said before, but just make him a version of Takeda and do an Anakin/Vader type character turn. Have him fight for Outworld because he blames Raiden for his family getting slaughtered or something.

I think it would have been better if they found a way to fuse Cole & Hanzo., Or Cole be Hanzo's "Vessel"

I don’t get it either.

I’m much more invested in the Edenians. Their stories are DEEP.

Yeah like how can you be crazy for Johnny Cage when Ermac, Mileena, Baraka, and Sindel exist? Hell Quan Chi should have been the main movie's focus. That dude is basically Doctor Doom and Loki combined.

Hot take: the Mortal Kombat franchise is at its best when it’s full on camp, has fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The more dramatic, edgy, excessively gory and “deep” it tries to make everything, the less interested I become. The stories of the last few games have shown that the more it tries to move away from what made it what it is and attempts to aim for higher and more lofty narrative aspirations and writing, it just ends up falling flat for me. It wants to be Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, but in actuality, it’s just Big Trouble in Little China with more fantasy and gore.

Now, am I saying that the characters, story and world shouldn’t receive proper flashing out and development? Absolutely not. But pretending that this series is some sacred and serious holy work of fiction that deserves to be honored, never strayed from and that any change in adaptation is sacrilegious is frankly absurd. People didn’t come to the franchise because of it’s deep lore, story and character backstories. They came to it because they like seeing memorable and colorful characters fighting and beating the crap out of each other in various ridiculous ways in a tournament in a bunch of crazy environments.

That’s why when the new trailer for MKII was released and people online started complaining, it had me perplexed. I mean, it has Johnny Cage being Johnny Cage, Shao Khan being Shao Khan by being cheap and wrecking fools, Kitana, Jade, Baraka, Jax, Sonya Blade, over-the-top and bloody fatalities, unique and crazy environments/stages, Scorpion fighting Noob Saibot, Scorpion shouting “Get over here!”, etc. All of the trademarks of the franchise are there. Not exactly the same as in the games, but they’re there.

It looks like big, dumb gory fun, which is what the franchise is at its core. If you’re a longtime fan and it’s not meeting your expectations, I sympathize. Those being fans of this franchise for so long and not seeing it adapted on screen at least close to the way that you envisioned it sucks (like the whole Cole Young debacle, which I totally agree was dumb). I can relate on some level (see Michael Bay’s Transformers films). However, even I’m open to different takes on that franchise as long as they get what it’s supposed to be about. I don’t always like all of them, but because they miss the point and are just badly written, not because they tried something different. And that’s okay.

As someone who has only a casual and passing interest in this property, I just don’t see what the problem is and I’d like to understand why.

The issue for a lot of folks is that including all the trademarks does not equal a story and from what we’ve been shown, we’re basically getting the same story as the first film. And that’s a shame because MK has a lot of lore to pull from that can be easily adapted.

Also, I love Johnny as much as the next guy but he’s perhaps the least interesting character to structure a film around. Now I’m open to seeing what they do because it’s Karl Urban, but there are so many other characters that would’ve provided a more interesting POV.

Its the lore from all these fighting games just completely mishandled from every adaption for the silver screen. Just give a descent budget and make it a tv series at this point. Wether thats MK, SF or Tekken, there doing a complete disservice making these half hearted attempts.

Its all the untapped potential that does my head in when it comes to these 30 year old fighting games. Nuts they have barely scratched the surface.
