Mortal Kombat XI returns to its bloody roots

Because it was based off a fighting game and no matter how hard one tries to argue, a fighting games story can never be anything more than mediocre, also, Conquest was really, really corny.

MK has a pretty extensive story, and when you leave out all the non-essential stuff, you'd have a pretty good story for a TV series or Movie.

Now Conquest though, that's based on a period in MK history, where we don't know much about what's going on. We know Kung Lao won MK 9 times in a row and not much else. But Conquest never even went past the first Tournament. And yes, it was really, really corny.

Mini series sounds cool. Better than nothing at all! :)

Yeah, MK has a very solid story. I think writing it off as "it's a fighting game" is really doing a disservice to the story.

Fighting games in general aren't that involved, as the storylines are just there to provide a reason for them to fight. Granted, they hire writers and the original creators to flesh it out via comics, cartoons, movies, and books, but they never started out like that.

I agree. I'd go as far to say that MK is the first fighting game to focus on story. I think most of the lore started with MKII.

True, as the first MK was essentially "Enter the Dragon" with a dash of supernatural.

true

as far as i could remember, other fighting games from around the same time as MK like Killer Instict, Tekken, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, etc. did not have a story/lore. the characters themselves may have been given background/bios, but a story within the game was non-existant. just a bunch of characters beating the crap out of one another.

MK was indeed the first. Street Fighter tried to follow with that horrible movie with Jean Claude Van Damme. Bison a world terrorist, really? :whatever:

IDA on Tekken. The story may be confusing but it most definetly has a story and lore to the series with fleshed out characters. I would say it rivals MK but MK gets the edge bc its characters are more iconic and mainstream

Tekken might have story and lore, but it's without a doubt more crazy, corny and cheesy than MK's.

Let's see, Tekken, Heihachi throws Kazuya down a cliff, Kazuya returns only to do the same to his father, now Heihachi is the one to return and dumps Kazuya in a volcano. What. the. hell?

LOL, sounds like it could make for a great comedy

Again please stop posting about a subject you clearly know nothing about. Mortal Kombat has a rich and engaging mythology. DEAL WITH IT.The story was the only reason people kept coming back last generation because MKDA, MKD and MKA were clearly NOT good fighting games.

Kung Lao didn't win 9 times. He won once. Outworld has to win the tournament 10 times in a row to gain entry into Earthrealm. Kung Lao was then beaten by Goro and then Goro wins 9 more tourneys and then is defeated by Lui Kang ( in the film he's defeated byJohnny Cage.)

No. You dont pop in quarter after quarter in a cabinet to listen to the story. Stop trying to pretend the "story" in MK is anything more than an expanded beat em up. It's just as corny and thin as every other fighting game, MK just happens to have cooler looking characters than the rest which is why ppl claim to pay attention to the "story". AT the end of the day, people will buy this game to rip someones head off, period. This is NOT, nor will ever be, a Metal Gear Solid or Mass Effect.

Cant wait to play the game tho....

Even if people don't play it for the story, the fact remains that, out of all the fighters that I know, MK has the most extensive and interesting history and lore.

I'm really interested about the story mode in the game, so the story is a big deal to me.

Since when did people pop quarters in anything? What is this? The early 90's? I buy games for the story/gameplay. Luckily MK has both.

So this isn't really a 'reboot,' but an alternate timeline where they've kinda smashed the first 3 games into one excellent package?

as i've explained it before, think of it as the new star trek movie, which is reboot of the franchise, but is technically an alternate time-line of the original series

I thought this was in the same continuity as the other MK games but that it would involve time travel, hence why MK1-3 was being revisited

Since when did a video game have to feature Hideo Kojima's redundant poorly edited ******** or Bioware's precious dialogue trees to have a decent story?
