Most overrated movie?

LOOPER.

I have to throw this one out there because I keep seeing people gush over Rian Johnson in the Star Wars forum and how brilliant they think this movie is. No, it really isn't. I've heard Johnson try to dismiss the plot holes in this film by saying something like "We introduce time travel, and then it just 'gets out of the way' so we can tell our story." Ummm, no. That's a cop out. Because your whole story REVOLVES AROUND TIME TRAVEL. You have to at least TRY to make it make sense. To me, the movie jumps the shark when Paul Dano's character fails to kill his future self. Why? Because instead of just KILLING Dano and eliminating the problem, Jeff Daniels' team decides to lure the future version of him back to them by DISMEMBERING the younger version. Tell me, what's the point of that? If you kill Dano, then the problem is solved (and they eventually do anyway, apparently). So there's no point in trying to lure the older version of him back. You could argue that they didn't want to mess with the timeline, but when you cut some guys arms and legs off, you DO alter the course of his life. So what was the point?

Unlike many things this is specifically explained in the film. Even maiming someone is less disruptive to the timeline than completely removing them.

And outside of the film Johnson has in fact talked a lot about how the time travel works, in the film it just wasn't necessary to have Inception style exposition.

Most overrated movie? Depends on what audience you are asking the question to and/or what qualifiers are attached.
Around here? The Dark Knight all the live long day by far.
Of the last year? Mad Max:Fury Road by a country mile with TFA as runner up.
Of this century? Gotta go with No Country For Old Men there.
Of all time? I'd say 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I will never understand the hate for Titanic or Avatar. James Cameron understands mass appeal, I fail to see how you can view them in a negative light aside from maybe some sub par (yet far from terrible) stories/writing EXCEPT for the fact that they were seen by loads of people and appreciated by the majority of said people. On top of that you have some of the best combinations of film making techniques in Titanic, and the introduction and development of new technology for Avatar.

If I had to guess I'd say they are too broad and that's why. Most people's favorite movies I'd bet come down to connecting with the said individual more than other movies do. The whole 'it feels like this movie was made just for me' type of deal. Titanic and Avatar are by definition the antithesis of that. They are made to appeal to no one in that way(unless you're the most conformist, generic person imaginable).

Titanic was a beautiful masterpiece. I don't think that film is overrated at all. The reason I think Avatar is overrated is because outside of it being visually stunning, its a story that has been played out over and over again. Pocahontas, Fern Gully, Dances with Wolves, etc, etc. I still really enjoyed Avatar, it was a very beautiful movie. But while watching it I always had the feeling of I've watched this before ya know.
