Movies That Aren't Classics,But Should Be.

I wouldn't change any, per se, but I'd throw in some others that are on par with some of these, for maybe a top 20 list (I realize the AFI list does extend through the 20s and beyond). Just throwing some out before I look at the rest of it).

The Sting
Spartacus
Battleship Potemkin (not as well known, but IMMENSELY important)
Cabaret
The Bridge on the River Kwai

Why? And the follow-up question is it because you don't like musicals and epic long character studies?

I didn't like Lawrence of Arabia or Singing In The Rain,Gene Kelly was great though.I do admire Lawrence of Arabia but me personally,I didn't care for it,too long and boring but well made and acted.

The Sting and Bridge of River Kwai are on there.

What movies that aren't considered classics, but should be? AFI Top 100 Movies of All Time's top 10 list is.
1.Citizen Kane
2.Casablanca
3.The GodFather
4.Gone With The Wind
5.Lawrence Of Arabia
6.The Wizard Of Oz
7.The Graduate
8.On The Waterfront
9.Schindler's List
10.Singin' in the Rain

In your opinion, what should be the top 10 classic films of all time be?
I'd get rid of The Graduate, put The Empire Strikes Back there, move it up to 3 and make The Godfather #4.

Top ten... of all time? Yikes...
..There are so many films that accomplish something timeless, and do it flawlessly. Every film on this list could not have been done better in any sense. But there are certainly more.

Reluctantly:

10. Annie (1980)
9. The Dark Crystal
8. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
7. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
6. Sunset Boulevard
5. Doctor Zhivago
4. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
3. Willow
2. 12 Angry Men (early 90s version)
1. Princess Mononoke. Absolute greatest film of all time.

Are they your personal favourite ten or what you think are the greatest ten?

I actually caught Roger Rabbit on TV last night. I hadn't seen it in about 15 years at least. It wasn't as good as I remembered.

That movie never loses its quality, it deserves to be on the list because it was such a breakthrough with Film, something like that has never been done before and it was done amazingly well.

Song of the South (1946) about 40 years earlier :)

COTPB should be on there. Good fun movie. AWE too for that matter, but I think some found it too wierd.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic, too. It is terrible that this movie's viewed as emo by those who've never seen it.

That aren't classics but should be?

In no order:

The Naked Prey
Sword of Doom
U-Turn
Laugh Clown Laugh
White Oleander ?spelling?

I'm fairly happy with the list. I've seen all of the movies on there, except I've only seen parts of Lawrence of Arabia (I don't have a lot of time to devote a whole afternoon to watch one movie. Maybe I will this summer though.) What I did see though, was superb. The only movie on there that really didn't wow me was The Graduate, but I see why it needs to be there.

If it were up to personal choice, North by Northwest or Rear Window would be there. North by Northwest more or less created the James Bond formula and set the stage for countless other spy movies. Its influence can still be felt in movies that deal with mistaken identity (A History of Violence for example). And of course, like all Hitchcock movies, the cinamatography is top knotch. And Rear Window was very inovative in the fact that it featured only one setting through the entire picture. Yes, it looked out into other settings, but it was stationed in the apartment. It also provided good commentary on the average movie goer who spends their time looking in on other people.

Since when hasn't GodFather been considered a classic?
really godfather is the orignal gansta movie.
and they should add norbit. lol jj
but honestly they should add star wars

Too late. Star Wars is like #11. I think people today really take for granted what Star Wars did for the Science Fiction genre. It did things that most filmmakers wouldn't think up in their wildest dreams, so it was very innovative. It was also the first movie to ever have such a scale. As a whole it did a lot for the film industry.

To Shuley: Did you intend this to be movies in the top 10 or just on this list? Because you and other people keep pointing out when people name a movie in the 30s or something as if they did something wrong.
