My Newest Comic Hobby!

I had a request for my map of Civil War on another thread. I'm doing it differant than most would think. I like a lot of the story, but a lot of the stuff overlaps. Therefor I'm taking a strange approach. I'm not binding the series issue by issue, but rather page by page. Overlapping scenes and such. It sucks that I did have to get rid of some scenes I liked because the adds/pages didn't line up right, or there's a little continuity error here and there, but overall I'm happy with it. I already have it cut and ready to go and have read it straight through with the below map, I just need to get it bound.

I only included the things I really wanted, or that I felt were important to the story (which is still most of the tie-ins and such). Some signifigant things are that I included a lot of the random Frontline stuff, but took out everything including and leading into the Iron Man scandle and the crappy way they treated Cap in the end. I thought they were both disrespectful and just didn't want it. I also snipped most of the side stories from Frontline (Penance was the main one I kept) including anything Atlantean related, Norman Osborne, etc.

Some continuity issues is that Cap is beat to a tar in the first major battle and in casts and such (the battle where Goliath died) but then there's the convoy scene from Spidey/FF where he's fighting Spidey perfectly healthy, and then he's all casted up again in the next scene. I hate stuff like that but it's necessary. I also have the midnight strike against Luke Cage as the first attack on unregistered heroes, though Frontline also called Prodigy's attack the first attack. Due to previous stories that shared a page with the Prodigy fight it had to be a little bit later, so that's another continuity error, but I loved the scene and had to keep it. And that's all the big ones that I can think of. The map is as follows:

The Civil War Vol. 1: Choosing Sides
Civil War 1 (Beginning - Nitro Explosion)
Wolverine 42 (Wolvie in Bar)

Pretty cool, sir!

That's really cool

Thank you Thank you

I know a lot of people may be against these, since you have to cut up the comics to do it, but I'm proud of them. However, they don't loose all value. One guy did a 6 or 7 volume G.I.Joe volume (from the old stuff) and it went on ebay for... I think it was around $400. I thought that was pretty good.

sorry if you already mentioned this,
but can you tell me exactly where you got these done and for how much?
What company did this?

I have some comics I can do that with too.
Feel free to instant message me about it, if you'd rather do that.

I get them done at Library Binding Company.

That link can give you some information, and if you have questions you can contact that James guy that's listed. He's real helpful and quick to get back with you.

A basic volume is $15 plus the cost of return shipping. Basic volume is 2 inches and under (really, 2 inches or so is when you really start losing art in the spine, so I try to stick around 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch). No die stamps or anything like that. All of mine have been basic.

Those certainly are a lot of CIVIL WAR books, isn't it? I remember I only bought about 2/3rd's of them at the time, and it still came to some 60-70 books. Marvel really milked us on that one, eh?

Even listing some 60-70 comics doesn't quite hit home until you lug out the whole box of them and lay them out on a bed or table for someone else to read. Then it's like, "damn".

Yeah... I set out my Civil War stuff for a friend of mine and his eyes went wide. He's like... "All this?!"

I laughed.

"That's just the tie-ins and all through issue 4."

OK so basically you get your comics cut up and attatched in a hardcover for 15 dollars for 2 inches? How much would it cost for them to color copy the pages of the comics, give them a border so the binding doesn't swallow up the images and give back your comics?

i have all those issues and am really tempted to scan them and make a cbr of them in tht order now...

That isn't a service they offer, but if you were to do it yourself they would bind them. I thought about it myself but feared the cost of the ink, quality paper, etc. I've seen some volumes online though that were copied. They looked real good. Some people do that to older or expensive comics so they don't tear up their copies.

This solves some problems, especially for someone like me who buys them to read and the art and not for investment reasons.
I bought all the Hush series, all the Secret Invasion, Red Hulk, several Ultimate Marvel story arcs, and others I can't think of right now,
and now this idea..
I could store them better and use them as reference better.

Thanks for sharing this great idea JewishHobbit.

They also look nicer on shelves than the white boards. My wife let's me put them in the living room now and people always appreciate them, even the non-comic fans.

Shipping varies on how much you send and how far away you are from Waco, TX. The binding cost is $15 provided you do the basic bind (which is what I do). There's a $30 minimum order, so 2 volumes at least. I'd estimate the 2 volumes would cost maybe $35-$45shipping both ways, but I could be wrong. I've never been good at shipping prices.

You could always try to find a local bindery and save that charge also. I just don't have any near me.

I've had a few questions on several threads, so I thought I'd just update this thread and bring them all here. Personally, I love this binding thing. I came accross some money a while ago and had nearly 30 volumes prepped and ready to be bound. Then we hit some money issues and I had to move that money over to our bills and such. Family first and all that. Eventually, everything I own will be on my shelf in one bound form or another.

And just for the fun of it, the volumes I was planning on binding was:

13 volumes of X-Men. This is the main core X-Men/Uncanny X-Men titles with other X-Title tie-ins where needed to better inprove the story. It ran from Uncanny X-Men 381/X-Men 1 through the end of Onslaught.

7 volumes of Avengers. This tied in New Avengers/Mighty Avengers/Thunderbolts/etc. starting at Civil War (because I'm missing a bunch of stuff prior) through the end of Secret Invasion.

2 volumes of Darkhawk (the whole 90's series)
1 volume of Death's Head II (of a 2 volume run)
2 volumes of Daredevil (Bendis' entire run)
2 volumes of X-Men 2099 (Beginning through 2099 World of Tomorrow)
2 volumes of Spider-Man (the next 2 volumes of the Clone Saga)
2 volumes of Fantastic Four (first 2 volumes for my 90's run, starting at 355, tieing in Fantastic Force and Namor)
2 volumes of New Warriors (1st 30 or so issues of the 90's series plus tie-ins and guest stars)
1 volume of Weapon X (the series, starting in Wolverine, then Deadpool, then back to Wolverine I think, then the oneshots, and the series through the "Underground" arc.)

So I guess that was 34 volumes. Man, I wish I could have sent those out. Stupid economy catching up to us.

im a fair way into my digital version of the civil war map now, luckily a mate hate a few digi versions of the issues already so i have less to scan, i have made a few changes to your exact layout (cant remember what exactly) and edited some on photoshop so there arnt any to be continued or title pages

Awsome. Anything to encourage someone else to get into this. It really is rewarding when you get it back and you can thumb through it.

itll be nice to read through when i get the order down, not up for cutting all those issues up though, I dont buy many comics n civil war is one of the only compete sets of anything I have

Hope you don't mind if I post the volumes I was thinking about binding:

I think I have all of Civil War (the main book)
Batman: Hush
Red Hulk (up till the most recent)
Ultimate Spider-Man (most of the beginning until around Gwen Stacy)
Ultimate X-Men (up till around the same time as Spider-Man)
Ultimates 1
(Most of Ultimates 2)
Secret Invasion (main book)
The Good Guys
Most (maybe all) Prime
New X-Men: Here Comes TomorrowExiles (up till Mimic left I guess)
Batman/Superman: Public Enemies (I hope I have them all)
(Several Green Lanterns after Rebirth)
The Tick (many, although I don't know if I want to cut them up.)

I probably have many more, but those are the ones I can think of right now.
It will be nice to have these in book form, easier access to them and tightier too.
and I have no problem with cutting them up, not really anyway.

Is it OK if I keep track of my list here?

That is really cool JH. I wish Marvel did something like that for hardcovers.

Hey, that's fine with me. This can be for anyone who wants to bind. I'm not greedy :)

Batman: Hush

I've considered this myself but I don't like doing them so small. I usually try to get at least 18 issues, though I prefer 25-30 issues per volume. Due to the Jason Todd tease in this story, and Joker's role, I thought it'd be cool to do the arc where Jason Todd dies, then the Killing Joke, then this, then the story when Jason Todd really does return. As one story I thought that'd be good.

Ultimates 1
(Most of Ultimates 2)

Definately doing this sometime myself. I have all of the 2nd run but not the first. The only question is do I want these alone and leave it at that (in 1 volume) or to include other Ultimate stories like the Ultimate Galactus story, Ultimates 3, Ultimatum, maybe Ultimate Six or Ultimate War, etc.

Secret Invasion (main book)

I also have this laid out in a page by page read-order with only the stuff I want. I can post it if you like.

Most (maybe all) Prime

I'm curious about Prime and the Malibu/Ultraverse in general. I have some of the All New Exiles and a few random issues of Rune and such, but I'm hoping to eventualy get more. I hear Prime was really good.

Exiles (up till Mimic left I guess)

I'll probably eventually do this myself but not immediately. I liked it up until when Blink left the 1st time. After that it trailed a bit, then after Mimic and Morph died/written out I just stopped reading.

(Several Green Lanterns after Rebirth)

I'm working on this one myself. I'll be tieing in Rebirth, Green lantern, and Green Lantern Corps... and probably Ion, Rann Thanagar War, Infinite Crisis, etc. I haven't really figured out how I'm doing it though so I don't have much insight to offer on this one.

The Tick (many, although I don't know if I want to cut them up.)

Loved the old cartoon and always wanted to read some comics but just never got around to it. I'll do it eventually.

How much Ultimate Marvel do you have?

Aw JH your doing Darkhawk you are a man after my own heart:D Prime was pretty good in the beginning as was prototype and Mantra I thought. I'm seriously thinking about this. I mostly buy trades now and then donate them the Library in honor of my brother who was killed in Iraq but I know some stories I love are never gonna be worth anything. Like Darkhawk, Nightwatch and Guardians of the Galaxy which I have the whole run of all three.

Urgh, so YOU'RE one of the people buying the Red Hulk comics. Shame on you. Just... shame.

Ok, I'm only half serious.
