Namor the Sub-Mariner

Yeah, they were reporting it was prob Mass Effect yesterday? My point? No one has a damn clue until it's actually announced.

I'm thinking it's Mass Effect.

However, if it does turn out to be Namor, I think there's a very good chance that it will be set in the MCU through some kind of deal between Universal and Marvel Studios. I'm not sure Universal will commit a massive budget* to a stand-alone character with very low name recognition without being tied to the MCU gravy train.

As much as I love Namor, I don't think I know anyone who's even heard of him. And some of my buddies are pretty big CBM fans... not necessarily comic book readers, but they do a lot of research of characters online, etc. But I digress. I mean, we live in a world where Spider-Man, who's several orders of magnitude more recognizable than Namor is struggling to get to $200 mill domestic.

* I highly doubt a Namor movie can be made (leave alone done justice to) without a sizable budget.

The difference here is that Aquaman will be heavily involved in the Justice League universe which will help launch his character. Namor is all alone at Universal so it is far more beneficial that he is involved with Marvel to give him a sense of inclusion in something much bigger since he will never be involved with FF/Xmen. I think at this point in the game, collaborating expanding universes are taking center stage. Solo superhero movies without being apart of much bigger universes are fading. Look at Spiderman stuck in his small world.

As somebody who is actually optimistic about Fox's Fantastic Four film, I have to say that I'm against this. Namor is not only an Avenger but he's also Marvel's first superhero and the entire foundation for the 616 universe. These rights need to revert and I'm surprised that they haven't already.

I've always associated Namor with the FF first then the Invaders then the Avengers. Never have associated with the XMen since that's been all recent crap and i haven't been following comics regularly for a while.

I'm a comic book fan, and I just don't care about Namor. How do you think the GA will feel? This just seems unnecessary.

Does anyone know just when Universal got the Namor rights as if it was the late 90s like most of the other rights then they have had it for at least 15 years without producing anything.

They tried making one back in 2003 with a David Self script, they tried again in 2006 with a rewritten version of the David Self script, and in 2009 they were supposed to have gotten as far as preproduction. I know that the different franchise have different contracts but with all the others they had to return the rights to Marvel after at most 7 years so Universal being able to hold onto Namor for 15 years seems strange.

That same article is mentioning Zac Efron as Namor. Efron is okay, but I don't think I'd like to see him as Namor. I think Namor should be taller, living up to that Imperious Rex title, and more of someone we see as a potential villain (who ends up an anti-hero).

Could Namor be under The Hulk deal with Universal. Marvel owns but they distribute??

Great to hear that Namor is back at Marvel. That doesn't mean that there are any immediate plans, but I'm glad he's back home.

The article was an interesting read, but (as the author stated), anything beyond the info about the rights was pure speculation. I think that Effron visually fits Namor if they're going for a young actor, but of course there is more to it than that.

For me ,its Daniel Day Lewis as Namor or bust.

Agreed. Still, I think Marvel should consolidate any/ all characters. If Disney getting back Namor hurts Fox's Fantastic 4 reboot, well that's just too bad.

10 years ago people said that about Iron Man, and now he's the biggest superhero in the world. With the right actor, director, and script, any character can work.

I knew something was up with Namor's rights. There had to be more to him being under lock and key all these years at Universal. I thought about maybe a similar deal like Hulk. Marvel can produce the film and Universal distributes just like they still have distribution rights with Hulk.

If Namor is back at Marvel, then that's great news. He's the original Marvel hero. He needs to be back at his rightful home.

You might be right, but I think we're comparing a B lister to a D lister. Iron Man's exposure was much higher than Namor's even back then, but no one expected Iron Man to be the lightning in a bottle it was. If they found that perfect combo you may be 100% correct.

I don't think you'll ever get DDL in a comic book movie. The days of that happening have long passed.
Oh, I know that it will never happen.
I just believe that he is perfect for the role .
EDIT : let me also say that I am very glad that the rumors from a few years ago that The Rock wanted to play Namor never came to pass.

Namor is no more D-list than Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange or Captain Marvel. Why is Namor unworthy in your eyes?

I just don't want a Submariner film to suck. It has to have the utmost integrity in the script. Casting must be perfect.

I'll accept a few guest-appearances at first, but I eventually want a full movie.

First, they have to cast the right Namor,
Then, the rest will fall into place .

I'm just not interested in the concept anymore than I am Aquaman, but don't get me wrong. If they make it, they've already got my money. :D

Hope we get a Sub-Mariner movie! He could start out as a great villain!
