Namor the Sub-Mariner

Since there are some legal issues here, I'd rather see him be saved for Phase 4 as the big bad. If Phase 4 gets two Avengers teams, I can see Kang being the other big bad. Otherwise Kang would be the saved for Phase 5. Korvac needs to come after Kang.

I know it's complicated, but I would LOVE for a surprise Namor announcement as one of the 2017-2019 films.

Definitely don't want Namor as the big bad of Phase 4, especially since he is more of an anti hero and was also an Avenger at one time. Save a big bad for someone who is actually bad.

And as for Korvac, you can't save him for that later stage when everything that is associated with him is happening right now. Either you don't use him at all or you bring him in earlier. The Collector, Carina, GOTG and all the cosmic stuff is highly related to him (Carina being his wife).

Well now that an Aquaman film has been announced by WB for 2018, it's time for Marvel to get their act together and bring out a Namor movie. I'm actually more interested in the character of Namor than Aquaman.

Also, one reason I'd prefer to see Namor first is that he might popularise Speedo briefs as the swimwear of choice, particularly in the US, instead of these awful board shorts that drag in the water, always feel wet and soggy afterwards and slow you down. Speedo briefs were once more popular instead of only for Olympic swimmers, and maybe even as beach wear, but now everyone seems to wear these long shorts that come right down to the knees and aren't even practical. If Namor made them cool or acceptable again to the casual wearer, he might start a fashion trend.

Hopefully Aquaman might offer Marvel some healthy competition and they might try to make their own underwater/ Atlantis-based comic book movie.

I forgot that Universal was going to make a Namor film. I thought that Marvel has the rites the rites to him. I can't believe Namor is still tangled up over at Universal.

At any rate Jason Momoa would've made an awesome Namor. He looks the part way more the Aqua Man.

I agree he looks more like Namor. But do Universal still have the rights as of now? I thought the most recent development is that they are back at Marvel.

The most recent statement from Feige I can find is the one in the article linked at the top of the page. Its at Marvel, but there are 'complications' and its not 100% a Marvel property like Iron Man. I'm guessing Universal has distribution rights or a cut of the gross or something like that.

I think this guy would make a great Namor,
He's Daniel Henney he played Agent Zero in Wolverine: Origins

I guess he could work but i don't see marvel casting an Asian. I would welcome this casting but the studio isn't going to do it. An Asian lead may be even harder then a black lead for a big budget superhero movie.

If the film is good it shouldn't matter.

What the hell?

Did Marvel sign a lifetime deal with Universal or something? How could they possibly still have anything to do with Namor. Its been like 10 years since they were talking of making a film.

hopefully the rights will get settled ASAP. Submariner needs to appear in the MCU, sooner than later.

As an Asian American myself, I don't care for Asian leads. For me, I watch films that have Asian settings to see if Asian culture is respected. For me it's all about Asian culture and how it's portrayed in the movies rather then watching a film with an Asian lead.

Hollywood has done a fantastic job of portraying Asia in their films in the last decade.

They are usually aimed at their domestic audience. There are some fantastic films out there though, that could be set in any country. Watch I Saw The Devil. One of the best films I've seen.
John Woo was my favourite director before he went to America. The 80/90's were class for the made in Hong Kong films.

Surprised that Japan doesn't make more live action films though. I know they love their anime but they have some fantastic story tellers.

...I'd like to see a stunt with Namor lifting a submarine..

So, obviously there has been no news on Namor in quite some time, but I'd still love to see him appear.

How would you guys feel if he was streamlined with the Inhumans at some point in the future? Maybe as a replacement for Triton, or even as Triton's son...?

I'm not saying i want that to happen (let the record show!), I'm just throwing it out there as an idea of one way to bring him into the MCU without creating a lot of redundancies (i.e. another hidden civilization on earth!)

Definitely don't want that. First of all, because I'd want Triton in the Inhumans - he's one of the more colourful ones. And second, because I want Namor to be his own person separate from the Inhumans where he is the Prince of Atlantis.

I like the idea. For me, it's far less about what culture the guy is from and more about visual differentiation. Having so many dark haired white male witty heroes or blonde haired white male beefy heroes is so boring. I'd welcome an asian or pacific islander aesthetic for Namor.

Its also why i'd have loved Pedro Pascal or Oscar Isaac's aesthetic for Stephen Strange.

Jason Momoa seemed like the more logical choice for Namor than Aquaman. Maybe they need to make Namor blond now in light of this. :o

Yeah, I agree with you. I was just throwing that idea out there because it had crossed my mind.

I do hope that we get a Namor film or appearance someday in the MCU that reveals his unique world... maybe Phase IV? Maybe if/when the FF are ever in the MCU.

This.

He should be separate, with his own origin, mythos and supporting characters.

There's no need or valid reason to merge him with other IPs.
It would only limit the potential diversity and richness of the MCU.
