Namor the Sub-Mariner

Well what are Universal going to do with Namor? They gave up the rights to Hulk years ago, who is a far more known and popular character. They can't possibly be trying to get their own Namor movie of the ground. Marvel should get him back.

Seems to me that theory is now bogus and studios don't have to make the movies to keep the franchises.

They didn't do copy and paste for all their contracts. Contracts had different time frames, and perhaps the ones from Universal didn't have time frames per se, or had less stringent 'we're working on it' specifications.

Whatever happens, I hope they don't call it "Namor the Submariner" because everyone's going to be pronouncing it 'submarine-er' and that's hilariously annoying.

I'm really wondering how bad negotiations for The Incredible Hulk distribution rights broke down. It seems to me that Marvel & Universal are not on the friendliest of terms these days.

I figure at this point, there's no hints at all of Namor being a WWII hero. They might as well go with the Ultimate version, where he's a long-buried criminal, accidentally released, then he becomes an anti-hero. Maybe Avengers 3.

It was written that Universal wanted to make a Narmor movie 4 years ago. They had a director and a script, but were unsure of the success of such a costly movie.

So they must have bought the right one or two years before. (so they must have the right since 5 ou more certainly 6 years)

If the contract is like those of Daredevil or Ghost Rider (a 7 years one), I wouldn't be surprised if Narmor returns to Marvel in the next two years...

Good job from Kevin Feige. He put a good pressure on Universal, to make the movie quickly or abandon the right.

I wonder if this explains why Marvel doesn't have the video game rights for Namor, either. I remember hearing that they couldn't use Namor in MVC3 or in Avengers Alliance, which seemed ridiculous at the time but now makes a little bit more sense.

Still bummed.

I would deem this a non-issue. We have already seen examples of studios loaning out rights if need be. Universal would certainly be willing to loan out rights of Namor to Fox or Disney in exchange for a hefty fee. Obviously Feige is cheap as hell so don't expect Namor in the MCU anytime soon, but Fox already acquired Kingpin from Sony in the past, unless Avi Arad was just fabricated the whole loaning Kingpin to Fox story. In this case, as long as Fox or Disney are willing to put up some money, Namor will be featured. Under no circumstances will he get a standalone movie, the exception being if Aquaman gets greenlit and is a big hit, maybe Universal would try to replicate that, or perhaps try to beat Warners to the punch.

I agree. marvel/Disney should play hardball with this one. They've had the option for however many years now. Fast & Furious is their main breadwinner franchise now.

What Marvel could do is to re-negotiate the deal where Universal gets the distribution rights for a set number of years for a Sub-Mariner feature. If Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson are being targeted for Namor, he's better off as a part of the MCU than just in his own "Namor-verse" or whatever you want to call it.

Why would Marvel do anything? Universal has no intention of launching this character. Could you imagine even WB launching an Aquaman movie? How is Universal, a much smaller studio, going to give a budget to justify this thing? If Marvel wants to use him, they will acquire him. But they will probably just use other characters in the meantime.

The same reason why New Line bought the Blade rights. These characters all have the potential to be successful franchises.

Why isnt there a limit on the time that a studio can keep the rights to a character without doing something with it????


If Universal isn't gonna make so much as a TV show with Namor, it needs to revert back to Marvel, automatically.
