Namor the Sub-Mariner

I really hope we get Namora and/or Namorita. Swimmer chicks look so awesome.

Heh, all these years of familiarity with the character and I only just realized that Namor is just Roman spelled backwards.

Haha! Back in the days of AIM (AOL instant messenger, not Advanced Idea Mechanics), that was a screen name I used: romanbackwards. Not many got it... :)

At any rate Jason Momoa would've made an awesome Namor. He looks the part way more the Aqua Man.
I agree he looks more like Namor. But do Universal still have the rights as of now? I thought the most recent development is that they are back at Marvel.
I was early to point out this fact. But I got a little backslash.
Strange how the wind can change direction after a while.

Jason Momoa seemed like the more logical choice for Namor than Aquaman. Maybe they need to make Namor blond now in light of this.
I suggested that too :)

I believe WB wanted to adapt Namor, not Aquaman.

I guess he could work but i don't see marvel casting an Asian. I would welcome this casting but the studio isn't going to do it. An Asian lead may be even harder then a black lead for a big budget superhero movie.

Not these days.

Plus you know that Bollywood is like the second largest film industry in the world with the mandarin industry close on its heels at fourth

Agent Tripp mentioned Atlantis on AoS. Marvel wouldnt just throw that in knowing what it means to the MCU potentially right? Could Namor's rights reverted quietly?

That would be awesome!

Unfortunately, there's no place for him in the current line-up, so he wouldn't get his own film until Phase IV at the earliest. But are there places he could show up sooner than that? Sure. While I don't expect to actually see him, the most likely place that I could see a clear namedrop would be in Dr. Strange. They have a long comic history together, and I imagine that DS's film will do a lot of world building. Maybe the The Ancient One can be teaching Strange all about the unseen/unknown aspects of earth, and he mentions the undersea race of Prince Namor or something.

He also mentioned the Bermuda Triangle before that. Now this city is a buried unknown city located in the Caribbean -- If you were guessing which myth or legend this city may be associated with, which ones would you guess? I'm going to go with the Bermuda Triangle and Atlantis. Tripp was guessing, not name dropping.

Note: I would agree with you if there was space for a Namor film in the near future but there isn't, so I can't.

I know but why would they even say it on the show they know it would cause speculation.

I guess they are just a bunch of inconsiderate A-Hole's. You're right, they should have known their brief mention would send the internets into a tizzy. How dare they stir up the internet with unnecessary speculation! Leave us to our slumber, Marvel.

Wow, never knew that

It matters whether you really bother to look or not. The best way to hide something is to have nobody looking for it in the first place.

The reason we don't see a Namor film is the same reason we don't get a new HULK film. While Marvel owns both characters Universal has the distribution rights. Disney doesn't want to give Universal a check for doing nothing just like they had to for Paramount.

I thought I read somewhere recently (possibly in the Hulk thread) that Universal has distribution rights if it's a Hulk solo, but if it's part of an ensemble, then Disney have the distribution rights. I think the same could be the case for Namor, which would then mean that Marvel should have him show up in an ensemble movie. An Invaders film, or a proper Defenders movie (with Dr Strange, Hulk, Valkyrie etc - not that Netflix series) would be the place to debut Namor.

let's hope Aquaman comes out first and gets it right, to clear the pathway for a Sub-Mariner movie.

I hope he shows up in one of the Untitled 2020 movies.

So is he under Fox or what? Disney/Marvel own the character?

He's under Marvel/Disney, but Universal retains distribution on a solo Namor movie.
Same issue they have with Hulk.

it's so odd universal never did anything with the character. Money in the bank.

Yup, one day I'd like to have a look at those contracts Marvel did years ago. They seem so odd and one sided.
I sometimes wonder if Marvel even had lawyers look them up or if it was just Perlmutter and Arad doing their thing without consulting with anybody.

JW made a ton of money but overall I ranked last among the other JP's and after what they threw together in that Jem movie do you really want them entertaining Solo Namor films?

If they get someone decent to write and direct, yes. They're a major player with decent budgets, they just don't know where to put it.

Two of the most-disastrous water based shoots ever to film where Universal (JAWS and Waterworld). Wonder if it was because of this that they baulked at the idea of shooting a water based superhero movie? I'm actually only kidding. But still....

That's like eating a nice tender porterhouse off of a trash can lid.
Whereas Marvel Studios in this case would be fine China.

Namor needs Marvel Studios more than F4 and Spider-man does.

Variety AUGUST 21, 2014:
Universal Veers From Superhero Trend for a Monster Plan
“The trend (in Hollywood) is franchise movies, and building movies around a character people want to come back and see over and over again,” says Erica Huggins
Marc Graser said:
As Disney, Fox, Sony and Warner Bros. plant flags on comicbook movies that will unspool in theaters through 2020, Universal honcho Jeff Shell and movie chief Donna Langley find themselves with few options other than to cull their studio’s library and secure outside properties that are established brands, and thus easily marketable. Its only comicbook-based superhero property is Marvel’s “Namor: The Sub-Mariner,” to which it has retained rights since 2006.

“The trend (in Hollywood) is franchise movies, and building movies around a character people want to come back and see over and over again,” says Erica Huggins, president of Imagine Entertainment, who was instrumental in acquiring the Anne Rice books.
