Neil Blompkamp's Chappie

They're techno rappers from South Africa. . . they're . . . special.

I don't say this very often...but that girl is scary. I can't look at her. Because of that, I doubt I'll watch the movie.

Yeah those two from that band kind of killed the trailer for me. The movie looks good but I don't know why Blomkamp had to include those two.

As someone who has followed them for a bit now, yes hearing their casting was quite a shock even.

I think they all just happen to be good friends, because they have a very niche non-mainstream style to them, which could easilly turn people who dont't "get them" off.

It would almost be like Chris Nolan casting Riff Raff for one of his films.

Didn't Blomkamp say he had a bad time working with the guy from that band? I remember reading that somewhere.

Not sure but I believe he (Ninja), actually turned down Bloomkamp who wanted him for the lead role in Elysium.

Wow this director really likes (motion captured) industrial looking robots in a slum setting. He seems to be a one trick pony.
I'm not going to lie I'm starting to wonder if he is a one trick pony.

a good movie is a good movie. but its scary how similar D9 ,Elysium and Chappie are.maybe he just needs to get this out of his system. poor,rich,outsiders,.....

i hope hooooooooope that this movie gets dark at the end. that he will start killing people. not become a villain. but just killing people who deserve it.

still sad that this is not a scifi comedy.

Looks good, but wasn't this supposed to be a comedy? And I agree that D9, Elysium and this look way too similar. Blompkamp should try something a little different next time, or risk being a one trick pony.

He's a film maker from a semi-third world country, he makes movies based on his own historical and cultural context.

Considering this is only his third movie it's a bit early to be condemning him for sticking with what made him successful. And ironically the same people saying he's a one-trick pony are probably the ones who say Elysium is weaker than D9, and Elysium is the movie that's less slummy than D9 which was almost 100% in townships. And all of a sudden being resourceful is a bad thing...people will never cease to find trivia to complain about.

There were reports that he was troublesome and difficult to work with on set, yeah.

Not to compare Neill unfairly to one of my favorite filmmakers ever, but was Cronenberg a "one-trick pony" when he was making endless body horror movies with pretty similar aesthetics? Feel free to say "yes," though i would certainly disagree.

listen, Elysium wasn't great. but it was okay. and it was a completely different type of movie from D9, despite Neill having a very distinct style and aesthetic preference with the designs in his movies (not a bad thing, in my mind, it's about creating a cohesive body of work) and a running interest in transhumanism (again, i think it's good if a director has a few key themes that they come back, most of the great ones did it). D9 was a hybrid mockumentary-sci-fi satire on apartheid with a Fly-esque transformation into the "other" at its center, Elysium was a Hollywood action movie with health care as its hot-button topic and the flawed Everyman its protagonist, just one who happens to get an exoskeleton.

this trailer indicates a movie that continues with Neill's primary aesthetic and thematic preoccupations, but, again, a completely different facet of those and a completely different sort of entertainment factor. weirdly, i got almost a Kindergarten Cop kind of vibe, just instead of Arnold trying to fit in with a class of kids, you've got a robot trying to find its place with humanity. i have no idea if it will be any good, but i will definitely go see it cuz i think Neill is one worth following.

Loved District 9, hated Elysium…this looks interesting. I love that Blomkamp cast Die Antwoord in this, makes me laugh, though his style is getting a bit old.

i went back and read all the news on this movie. for over a year this was supposed to be a full on comedy. not just some comedy elements but a full on comedy.

i guess this was just a rumor that was wrong.

I just watched the trailer... Chappie hasn't gone full ****** on this has he?

he is asking if he is acting like he is because he is a child robot or because he is a stupid robot.

Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er are the ones teaching a robot with AI...is there any hope he's going to turn out better?

Now I know why the name "Visser" sounds so familiar. No, it's not what South Africans say when they have to go to the toilet...it's from Animorphs.

Looks boring, after The crap that was Elysium I will wait for rental.

Ken Eyh borrew yor veesser?

Rofl...that's an exaggeration that comes from listening to Wikus van der Merwe and Kruger. We don't speak like that, thankfully. I was hoping Blomkamp would represent South Africans a little better in his next outing...But alas, it seems the world will continue to see them as ineloquent numpties who wear dollar boxers.

Dollar boxers?:hehe:

People don't like South Africans? I didn't know that, I don't think I've ever heard a negative word about them in my life.

Hugh Jackman's hair style makes him look like Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid 3.
