Not to compare Neill unfairly to one of my favorite filmmakers ever, but was Cronenberg a "one-trick pony" when he was making endless body horror movies with pretty similar aesthetics? Feel free to say "yes," though i would certainly disagree.
listen, Elysium wasn't great. but it was okay. and it was a completely different type of movie from D9, despite Neill having a very distinct style and aesthetic preference with the designs in his movies (not a bad thing, in my mind, it's about creating a cohesive body of work) and a running interest in transhumanism (again, i think it's good if a director has a few key themes that they come back, most of the great ones did it). D9 was a hybrid mockumentary-sci-fi satire on apartheid with a Fly-esque transformation into the "other" at its center, Elysium was a Hollywood action movie with health care as its hot-button topic and the flawed Everyman its protagonist, just one who happens to get an exoskeleton.
this trailer indicates a movie that continues with Neill's primary aesthetic and thematic preoccupations, but, again, a completely different facet of those and a completely different sort of entertainment factor. weirdly, i got almost a Kindergarten Cop kind of vibe, just instead of Arnold trying to fit in with a class of kids, you've got a robot trying to find its place with humanity. i have no idea if it will be any good, but i will definitely go see it cuz i think Neill is one worth following.
