Fantasy Netflix's Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender General Discussion Thread

On episode 3 and its getting a little better. Acting is still rough outside of the more tenured actors.

The cinematography though...it makes these sets look like sets.

Netflix forcing them into 8 episodes (similar to how they forced MotU into 3) means there's barely any breathing room for these characters to get to know one another.

I just finished the 1st episode and honestly thought it was decent for a Netflix show, the only time I rolled my eyes is with Gran gran repeating lines from the animated series, bar for bar.

Yeah, three episodes in and this isn't bad so far, there's clearly an effort being made to do the story justice, and they largely succeed, which I appreciate after the last attempt cared so little that they couldn't even bother to get the names right. But I just don't see the point of this show existing when the original has roughly the same runtime, and does a better, more elegant job telling the story within a similar format. Nothing that they've changed or added really feels like enough to set it apart from the original.

Nah, this is worse than sets looking like sets. I actually like sets that look like sets in scifi and fantasy. One Piece very much were set. This is 100% the Volume. It is so much worse than a mat painting background. It is ugly.

Anyway, first episode down, and it was okay. Pacing wasn't too bad until they tried to pack the Southern Air Temple in there at the end.

Got done watching the whole thing and while I'll probably go into more detail in the future about my thoughts, right now are that it got off to a rough start and then gradually got better. Dallas Liu as Zuko was the strongest actor out of the four main cast for me, and the latter started off bad and improved over time. But man, they really need to know how to use the Volume because a lot of environment shots looked downright terrible.

Also been reading some reviews and I automatically dismiss anyone who unironically says that this is worse than M. Night's version. At its worse, it's not even on the same level. And whoever wrote that DiscussingFilm review of it has some serious issues, jesus.

Damn y’all this muted response is deflating me a bit. So this is no One Piece huh?

Definitely no One Piece. But I don't think it's anywhere as bad as people are making it out to be imo, there's some good stuff in here. Definitely nowhere near the movie's level of bad.

It's far from bad, it's just that when it's overall so close to the same length as the cartoon's first season it's hard to not hold it up against the cartoon, which sets an extremely high standard.

Yeah, this wasn't bad at all but at the same time I can't honestly say I thought it was great either. Like One Piece I didn't mind the changes they made but it was really lacking the charm and energy of the anime.

I feel like One Piece just nailed the characters and tone of the show a lot better despite the changes although they struck gold with the casting of Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Daniel Dae Kim IMO.

Those two were pretty much perfect as Iroh and Ozai and I really liked the actress they got for Suki but the rest of the performances were kind of all over the place especially when it came to the main 4.

I could deal with it but it was definitely rough at parts.

I watched episode 1 of the new Avatar and oh my gosh... It's so bad.

The casting is terrible, the kids are as stiff as hell, there is no chemistry at all, Aang just smiles, there is no real emotion or complexity, I prefer Aang from Shyalaman's film because his performance was a hundred times more believable. The dialogues are terrible, most of them are exposition and things that we've heard a thousand times like "I'm an avatar, so I'll do what an avatar should do, which is restore balance, because without balance there is no balance", of course it's hyperbole, but it sounds like the AI was writting this script , there is no passion in it.

Even though the episode was an hour long, which is the same length as the story from the first 20-minute episodes, everything seems so rushed. The direction is generic, the visual effects are good, but the backgrounds are tragic, too much things happening in the background just because they were in the original series, Shyalaman's world was nevertheless believable, here it looks like a stage play, because everything is made 1:1, without taking into account that film is a different medium, and everything is crystal clear, and the actors play with the famous "volume" background behind them, so the whole thing looks look fake with close-ups of faces, the characters practically stand in one place and give expositions.

In Netflix's One Piece we had similar flaws, but they were smaller because the characters had more chemistry, there was more sincerity and less brazen nostalgia, and everything happened on real sets, not on displays behind the actors backs.

The series took 15 episodes and condensed them down into 8 episodes for the live action. So they cut stuff out. They also joined some episodes together. Overall I enjoyed it. I would still watch the original cartoon if you haven't seen it though. 8 episodes for this story was a bit too short. We need more time to follow the trio on their adventures. Iroh and Zuko I think they did enough to establish their story really well.

Not enough Appa, and why they didn't let the Cabbage man say his famous line more is beyond me. They cut him short a few times until he finally yells. I thought a couple of the kids seemed like their voices fit well at certain times. At some points it reminded me of the cartoon voices. I think the best part of the show is Zuko and Iroh. Their relationship is really well done.
The whole backstory with the Fire nation crew that accompanied Zuko and Iroh was also a nice impactful moment. I don't recall their story from the old show, but this one really was quite a revelation. The whole scene at the end with his crew in episode 6 was really good.
Of all the episodes number 7 was the one I didn't care for. I didn't like the forest spirit stuff. Even in the old show I never liked those episodes. I like seeing the world and the relationships between the different factions more.

Seeing the minstels was a nice surprise, "Secret Tunnels" is stuck in my head now. The world looks great, all the exterior shots of the cities are really nice. I think they should've had 10 episodes and spent more time in the Northern Water tribe.

Commander Zhao was really well cast. I do recognize the actor from other things, his protrayal was really good in this.

I hope they do the rest of the series.

Started and finished the whole thing yesterday and while I had issues with some characterizations and changes, I overall liked it well enough but it’s not a great adaption like say The Last Of Us show for its source material. At best, I think it’s an admirable but flawed attempt to bring the series to live-action, and I actually do think it does a few things better than the original did.

One of which is I think is the more serious tone, I definitely feel the toll of the hundred year war and how dire the situation are more than I did with the animated series. Also someone who only watched the first season in preparation for the series, I was quite surprised how many elements they pulled from later seasons.

Makes me wonder how the original creators would’ve pulled it off had they stayed on the project. There were rumors that they were planning to do a more drastic re-imagining of the series than what the final show’s more faithful approach and I can’t help but wonder how that would’ve been received. Of course we will never know, but it’s an interesting food for thought.

I watched 3 episodes and i dont think i can keep going.
ATLA was a huge thing for me growing up, it got me through tough times and seeing all these baffling decisions in story and character is upsetting. Its definitely not as bad as Shyamalan but for a show that was promising to be faithful and honor the original, its just heart breaking.

At least in Shyamalan movie the characters were showing actual emotions.

Yeah, no.

The only thing I'll say here that was equally as bad as in the M. Night movie was the actress who played Gran Gran in the show. Other than being nothing more than a exposition machine, her line delivery was honestly terrible.

That's also true. I think a lot of direction of the show failed some of the younger actors here as well. Katara's especially because most of the time it felt like she was just mumbling her lines, but when it came to emotional scenes, she did those well.

Not really, she's bland as hell, the only thing she does is delivering really softly every line od exposition, even is she supposed to be a bit angry. Sorry but movie Katara was way better.

You have your opinion and I have mine, bud. :like:

We binged all eight episodes in a row. I was fully ready to be annoyed by the changes, but honestly, I mostly really enjoyed it. An eight episode season was never going to be exactly the same, but the most memorable moments of Book One were all here, and remixed in clever ways. Plus, some of the new stuff was really nice too.

Granted, there were definitely a few shoddy lines, occasional wonky VFX, and rushed moments. I also felt the episodes leading up the finale were stronger than the final episode itself. But in the end, this show feels like a nice companion piece to the animated series, and I'll gladly revisit both.

Hope they get to see it though to the end with two more seasons.

I feel like there would've been no way to match that moment no matter how hard they could have tried. :funny:

Speaking of episode 2,
no Sokka in Kyoshi Warrior makeup was severely disappointing smh.

Probably to avoid being banned in the south.
