Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Given the differing timelines I really can't say I agree with the reasoning, just have it happen in Geralt's timeline with a separate child actress for younger Ciri, it's just too important of a story for me to think that anything can justify changing it so fundamentally. Not only does it lay the foundation for Geralt and Ciri's adopted father/daughter dynamic but it also sets up Geralt being trusted by the Brokilon Dryads which is a fairly important part of his story after Thanedd.

Exactly.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think it hurt the show that much. Also, she's not really being thin skinned about it.

Thin skinned would be like "**** you all! You're wrong and I'm right!"

I think not including Geralt and Ciri's meeting in Brokilon kinda rips the heart out of their meeting/reunion.

I do agree that she's not being thin skinned, I just think it's a sorry explanation.

I still got emotional over their relationship this season. I liked the idea that they already knew each other in a way. They knew instinctively that they belonged together.

They also changed the nature of Geralt invoking the Law of Surprise himself. In the books it was completely different, but I thought it worked fine for the show, and added a bit of levity to the situation.

At the time, Geralt either knew Pavetta was pregnant or suspected she was. He invoked the law of surprise with the original intent that the child would be raised as a Witcher.

The reason I think it works is because it gives Geralt an opportunity to change and grow as a character in a way that's a bit more meaningful for a TV audience.

I don't agree with all of the decisions, but I can certainly see where she's coming from. I just hope the trolls don't run her off Twitter. She's being awfully candid and open about all this.

I have to give props for that and it actually lessons my feeling that she doesn't understand the material.

I also plan to list some thing that I think new Witcher fans should check out. One of the YouTube channels I planned on suggesting is Proper Bird. Sadly today I read a statement she put out about leaving the Witcher fandom because people have been sending her death threats because she didn't like the show because of changes. I do suggest that people still check her channel out because she has great Witcher content or if for no other reason than to show support for a fellow fan.

and I was at my local Barnes and Noble yesterday and their Witcher section ( if you want to call it that ) was sold out except for two books.

I love Proper Bird's channel and her videos. Very sad that pro-Witcher trolls made her stop. She simply made a video about the show where she talked about the changed she didn't like. Also, it's not like she hated the show.

Witcher George also makes good Witcher lore videos.

EDIT: I think the journey to Brokilon Forest would've been kept in had the show had another couple episodes this season to show how Geralt and Ciri did meet and bond once before and Geralt tried to deny Destiny for a while. I would've probably had it set after the Dragon episode.

Also, I would've held off the fall of Cintra until the second episode. Let it build up and let us get to know the Cintran court a little bit more.

I love Witcher George as well. I also like xLetalis. And for those who have never watched Proper Bird, Witcher George or xLetalis, Proper Bird and Witcher George are what you could call lore channels while xLetalis has more game content that anything else as he just read the books not long ago.

Also for those who have no interest in the games, don't have time for another game or whatever Proper Bird and Witcher George have excellent play throughs on there channels. If not for play through videos I probably wouldn't have ever paid attention to the Witcher.

xLetalis videos are great because he gives you the outcomes of things you'd likely never try in The Witcher 3, like Geralt getting beat up by the demolitions dwarf. And you see the dwarf just wailing on Geralt, it's hilarious.

I wish I was too, but there was no relationship between them.

And it'a a sorry explanation indeed from LSH. They chopped out some of the best parts of the book in favor of nothing. Just to make three plots run simultaneously.

I would've just done the short stories from both books as episodes. Pick the best ones and have it be an intro to the world of the Witcher while peppering in small things to lead up to the fall of Cintra.

Removing Nenneke from the intro of it all was a mistake as well. I loved how the Last Wish revolved around Geralt realizing he almost got himself killed and reminiscing about his past experiences.

Geralt was probably too white and too male to make the story go from only his perspective.

Especially considering that they weren't able to add anything worthy in place of changes. LOTR or GoT also deviated from the source. To not bloat the cast or streamline the narrative... But did we see anything comparable to Arya and Tywin or Arya and the Hound in Witcher? Nope. Biggest meme from the show is how Geralt reacts with "****". That's the talent. Lyrics, atmosphere of the books is gone... And natural development of the stories.

I definitely plan on watching the season again before the 2nd season comes along. Might play Witcher 3 or read some of the books in the meantime.
Yeah I’ll play the games again and listen to the audiobooks. (I already bought them all)

Reading the books again, on to Baptism of Fire. Would love to go through Witcher 3 again but just dont have the time to download it again let alone play the thing, lol.

Well that's my worry with Witcher 3. I can only game around 5 hours a week nowadays so 100 hour games are just too much.

Haha, yep it’s a big game. You could always watch playthroughs (either full or narrative only) if that interests you.

I agree with this. The original framing device is much better than what we got. This the biggest criticism I personally have with the show.

From Bloomberg: CD Projekt Gains as Netflix Revives Interest in Old Witcher Game. Shares in Poland's biggest computer gamemaker rise as much as 1.8% in the year's trading day in Warsaw, fueled by reports on revived interest in its 4-year-old Witcher 3 title.

The ones who read the books, got the timeline jumps easily?

It was after re-watching the first episode, that I realized that when Ciri was playing outside with the boys, she looks behind as in sensing something (of course, she's turns but there's no one there)... And it was when Geralt saw her for the first time.
