Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Meng'er Zhang as Milva is the most exciting to me, loved her in Shang-Chi and Milva is one of my fave characters from the books so hopefully it works out. Not sure how big a role it will be but keeps me invested.

Playing Thronebreaker and seriously can't believe how awful the Netflix adaptation is... When you can squeeze so much out of a character from the books, invent new likable supporting characters... And make it all feel organic and natural to the lore.

I also can't believe people praise Cavill in the role. Maybe he's invested in the role, but he does a terrible job. He's even worse than Superman, because his acting consists of two expressions:

Cavill is easily one of the most wooden actors currently getting huge mainstream roles.

This scene in Man of Steel when he's in the pick-up arguing with Kevin Costner(right before the tornado) really shows how little range he has. I find it hard to take him seriously as an acfor but he's managed to carve out a solid career and dedicated fanbase.

I think he's fine in smaller roles but as the main attraction he just doesn't cut it for me.

Meh. I’ve never found Amell particularly engaging. Hopefully he is here, but I never have high hopes when I hear he’s been cast in something.

Meng’er Zhang though is a great addition.

It will depend on execution. I think the stuff in S2 could've served as a good setup to the Scoia'tel but they botched it all. But now they are doing the guerrilla Scoia'tel who are allied with Nilfgaard? And Gallatin is one of their leaders. I'm sorta confused. Like this is counter to where they left the elf characters in S2.

How is it that after 3 years and vaccinations these studios still are incapable of keeping a production running when someone comes down with covid? Send the sick person home, give the imunocompromised crew optional paid time off, sanitize the set, and get on with it. It shouldn't take weeks to get this done. Most major businesses have learned to accomplish this in a day or two.

Because they are trying to *not* have every single person on set catch the disease, and once you have one confirmed symptomatic case you have many many more exposed individuals who may pop at any time ( and be infectious before its detectable )? Sanitizing the set has absolutely nothing to do with it, and provides essentially zero help. People don't catch Covid from surfaces, they catch it from other people.

Not sure what the COVID guidelines over there are, but the shutdown could've been precipitated based on the guidelines.

Yeah annoying but these productions have to been seen to be doing the "right thing" as well for PR reasons, plus Im not sure what the rules even are these days.

Seems like every season so far has been stopped for a while due to injury or illness of Cavill, hopefully it wont be a long stop and he gets well soon and doesnt greatly delay things in the long run.

I had COVID recently. It was not fun for about a week, my case was thankfully not too severe and I was prescribed good treatment with Paxlovid (pill that helps treat COVID now).

The good news is now that while the pandemic is still ongoing, doctors at least know how to treat it better, and there are multiple legitimate treatments now for COVID that can help you feel better and curb the symptoms. After I was diagnosed, I was very encouraged with how knowledgeable medical staff and doctors seem to be about COVID now and how to treat it.

Provided Cavill doesn't have a severe reaction to the virus, he should be good to go again soon and production should hopefully resume very soon.

Season 3 sounds like it was pretty deep in production already. But considering that Cavill is one of the central leads, it sounds like they just couldn't move on and do more without him. Especially if they were doing things like the Thanedd ball and coup.

And considering that, provided his case is not too dangerous, it's only going to be a temporary halt.

Also, the halt might be necessary to monitor other cast and crew members who had close contact with Cavill to make sure they don't get sick either. Like they might need to temporarily quarantine too in case they become symptomatic as well.

Hopefully he gets better quickly and it’s not too much of a setback to production. I’ve been steaming through the Witcher books recently. I love having a cross-media product where all the versions contribute well to the overall picture.

Yeah, while it’s disappointing that this could delay the show somewhat, it’s a small price to pay to ensure that everyone is safe and Cavill (or whoever tested positive) can recover. Also, they’ve been filming since April, haven’t they? I would imagine they’re almost done filming.

Makes me wonder if the reports were overblown, and if the halt was already mostly done by the time this story got reported.

Sounds like the production crew knew what they were doing and knew how to handle this in a post-COVID era. At least I hope that's the case.

I would have thought so. Companies have had a lot of time to adapt and earlier there was a real business threat whenever one person got COVID, so by now they should all have good procedures. I'm surprised by how well my workplace has handled it.

Adapt is a good word for this.

As of last Saturday my local Target has 14 Jasmine figures. The Geralt figures sold a few months ago but Jasmine was actually restocked a couple of months ago. At this rate the wave 2&3 game figure won't be stocked and more than likely the W2 Netflix figures won't be restocked. I don't know how Target goes about what store gets what stock but 14 figures peg warming can't be be good in anyway shape or form.

Now that we have a Fantasy TV sub, feel free to create episode/character/various topical discussion threads on this show. Just don't forget to select the Witcher Thread Prefix when creating those threads.

I'm actually more excited about Willow right now.

Looking forward to that too, although that seems a more "family friendly" fantasy show. One things for sure, we have never had a bigger and wider choice for fantasy tv shows it seems. GOT feels like it has opened the doors for all these shows.

Mileage will vary for each of course but at least their options out there now.
