Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Looking forward to that too, although that seems a more "family friendly" fantasy show. One things for sure, we have never had a bigger and wider choice for fantasy tv shows it seems. GOT feels like it has opened the doors for all these shows.

Mileage will vary for each of course but at least their options out there now.
This is as good as it’s ever been for current and upcoming fantasy shows and the potential for more. Streaming shows give enough time for the detailed subject matter big fantasy novels to be dealt with and they are proving popular. I hope many more good ones get greenlit.

Nice! I’m listening to the Time of Contempt audiobook right now.

Disney+ X-Men '97 Reboot Gets Exciting Updates From MCU Writer

Q: "Can you discuss how the production team came about, like how they were recruited for X-Men '97?"

[Beau DeMayo]: "For sure, in fall of 2020, Marvel's head of streaming asked me to develop a take to revive this show. From there I pitched it out, was hired. My LP was the first hire and he brought along all the amazing talent that followed. My general rule was you HAD to be a fan. No questions. I've been on show - namely Witcher - where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It's a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you're allowed to add to its legacy."

Another Witcher Season 2 writer apparently trashed him (without naming) for workplace violations and apparently thought better and deleted it.

Book accurate or not I enjoyed the first season and the first episode of Season 2 with Geralt and the monster. And then the Ciri training parts scattered after. Most of what was after season 2 episode 1 however... not nearly as much. It's become a different show. A lesser show than it was. I can only hope they've gotten their **** together for Season 3 if that's even possible at this point.

I'm of a couple minds off of this.

Based off of DeMayo's comments, what he's saying definitely showed in the second season, especially with Yennefer's character arc.

That said, Beau DeMayo was a lead writer on this show. He wrote the episode where Eskel died, and he wrote Nightmare of the Wolf.

I mean, both things can be true at once - the writers’ room could be openly disrespectful of the source material (the evidence in support of that seems to be on screen), and this dude could also have been fired for being abusive.

Well it's a pretty serious allegation. He's claiming misconduct and assault by DeMayo.
True and said he was fired for it. If he can't prove that, it might be a rather large issue for him. Though if it is true, using it only as a way to slap back feels petty. Feels like something you make a point of before so they can't get another job in the industry and others aren't at risk.

I think there were some tough changes in S1 that I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt over. First season growing pains, first-time showrunner. But it wasn't like they ruined it or anything. They went off the deep end in S2.

I agree completely. I had issues with season 1, but it was a solid enough foundation. Season 2, they showed they weren't interested in the source material. I get that works for others, but not for me.

The games wanted to avoid the issue of an adaptation, so they set themselves after the books, while staying pretty faithful to them. The show is an intended adaptation of very specific stories and well, it's just stopped being that.

I still really dig the first episode of season 2. Probably my favorite episode of the show. It's also the only one that feels like it got the original story it was based on. I wish the rest of season 2 was like that.

I ****ing knew it! I said he was looking for his exit strat, because of the Witcher season 2 not building on it's season 1 audience. :lmao:

He's such a grifter of fandoms. He' has a gaming PC, he's totally a geek. He don't give a ****.

On another note, that Witcher spinoff is about to tank.

Wow didn’t saw that coming. Liam Hemsworth will replace him, but this has written cancellation all over it now.

Wonder what will happen to that Argylle trilogy…

Hmm, hopefully Hemsworth can go do a good job. I want the series to continue a good while. Not sure this will turn out to be the best move for Cavill.

Utter horse manure. I'm done with this show. What a joke. I like Cavill and all, but this is one reason why I was initially hesitant about him being cast in the role. He's really a film actor at the end of the day.

Also Liam Hemsworth as his replacement? No offense to Hemsworth, but that's also garbage.

Lastly, they should've cast Zach McGowan from the beginning.

I blame Lauren Hissrich. Show went over a cliff in Season 2. Utter tripe. Done with Netflix for good. It was all there for them. Unlike with Game of Thrones, all the books were done.
