Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Haha, not a bad likeness there.

Mads Mikkelson is Vesemir in my mind but I wouldn't be against Hamill doing it if it somehow ends up going that way.

Didn't Mikkelson say he wasn't interested in doing shows again unless it was bringing back Hannibal?

A new english Witcher book is being released May 22, 2018.

World fantasy award lifetime achievement winner, Andrzej Sapkowski, introduces Geralt of Rivia. a witcher who is one of the few capable of hunting the monsters that prey on humanity. A mutant who has the task of killing unnatural beings. He uses magical signs, potions, and the pride of every witcher -- two swords, steel and silver.

But, a contract has gone wrong, and Geralt finds himself without his trademark weapons. Now, he needs them back because sorcerers are scheming and across the world clouds are gathering.

The season of storms is coming...

It is a "midquel" set before the short story, "The Witcher", and after most of the short stories in the book "The Last Wish".

I'm just got to Time of Contempt so it'll be a bit before I reach the new one. Is Lady of the Lake the definitive ending to the series?

I've got that audiobook and kindle on my waiting list.

I love that they use The Witcher series to advertise those books over here. I hope it burns the author. :hehe:

I'm on Baptism of Fire and I'm wondering...

is Geralt really permanently crippled after his fight with Vilgefortz? How do they explain him having no trace of it in the games?

No. He's injured and it takes time for him to heal, but he goes way before he's ready and healed basically. And it does play out like that from now. How I read it.

I also found this book to be a tough read if I'm honest. But good in hindsight.

I loved the short story books and the first two books were pretty good but yeah this one feels a bit of a step down. I'm liking the books but Geralt can be kinda whiny at times.

I really respect Lauren Hissrich for being so open on Twitter, but on the other hand, I wish she wasn't. The reason I say that is because I don't want hardcore fans to harass her and give her a hard time over this or that.

2020 sounds like a realistic time frame for the show to premiere. No casting has even been done yet.

Also if the first season is 8 episodes, IMHO that's a good amount. Some of the later Marvel seasons are souring me on a full 13.

I think 10 is a good number of episodes but if the first season focuses on just The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny then I can see it working fine.

I'm finally on Lady of the Lake and I gotta tell you, each book has gotten worse than the last. Im halfway through this book and the detours the narrative takes is becoming grating.

Anyone ever read The Road With No Return? Technically not a Witcher story, but it's the story of Geralt's parents and how they meet. It's a short story and a quick, digestible read. Very well done.

Also it has a very cool scene that was lifted directly for the video game. To me it's a good example of how Sapkowski can sort of capture on and really put together some inspired fantasy narrative and he was doing it already in the 80s.

Finished Lady of the Lake. It was a meh ending. I think the games seemed a more fitting ending for Geralt if one takes Blood and Wine as the endpoint.

The books did give me a much greater appreciation for the games though and they did have some great parts. If anything the books seem perfect as a tv show because of the multiple stories happening at the same time but I thought it was kinda distracting to read.

Fan fiction or not, the games do feel like the true ending(s) of the books to me.

And you can basically create the best ending that works for you.

That video relased by CDPR thanking the fans of the series should have been the last true mission of the game, an ending where everyone comes to your house and you progress through it like the mission with Lambert and Eskel at Kar Morhen, one of the highlights of the game to me.

Either way I was satisfied with the ending of the game and feels much more fitting than what we got in the books.

Not yet. They haven't even started casting yet. Seems like Hissrich is still in the process of writing out the first season.

So apparently Henry Cavill is a HUGE Witcher fan. Played the 3rd game AGAIN recently and loves the books. Even said he'd love to play Geralt when asked. Zack McGowan is my top choice, but I'd be down 100% if they somehow got Cavill.

I don't think Cavill would the most inspired choice. If I were to cast him as a character, it would be a flashback story for Corin.
