Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

In some ways I think its probably best they went for the books instead of the games as that would have been a much higher bar to clear from the showrunners perspective. The characters are pretty much loved because of the games and the games version of them, I think it would have suffered a lot more trying to recreate that.
I think their biggest issues will come with the comparisons. I am cool with them doing their own thing. But when you are adapting something so beloved, you might run into issues, especially if it is really inferior.

I think many will judge the show off the games even though it’s not supposed to be a representation of the games.
It's all the same source material. It's like not expecting people to compare adaptations of Marvel characters to the MCU. It is unrealistic at this point.

Yeah this is probably true, its inevitable in fact as probably a lot of people dont even realize the games were based off books in the first place.

I hope the show is a big success anyway, and that that boosts production of fantasy shows, films and games. Just a shame the author has been such a prat about the games.

A LOT of people are going to be expecting stuff from the games, including some amazing characters.

Gaunter O’Dimm not being in this thing is an absolute tragedy.

...Mind you, the real version of him will be on Amazon soon anyway, under his other name Walter.

Yeah, I know a lot of people don’t from my recent conversations with gamers I play other stuff with. Most seem to be looking forward to the show believing it is based on the games and don’t even know the books exist. And some thought the books were based on the games, which I’m sure Sapkowski would absolutely love! :D

I thought the books were based on the games at first. The funny thing is I think I was aware of the books first, well I remember the wolf head making an impression on me. Also don't forget all of the U.S. versions of the books has Witcher game art on the covers. I love what I've read so far but I do admit I've only read The Last Wish and about 3/4 of Sword of Destiny. I'm not a big reader so it can take me forever to read a novel.
I think using the game version of the wolf head medallion would have been great. Not only is it a great design and also it's instant brand recognition. The one sword instead of two doesn't bother me. I just wish that when people point out it's based on the books and not the games that they would do so in a informative was and not a condescending way. I've seen way to many people basically reply to it doesn't look like the game with ugh it's based on the books.
While I only know bits and pieces of the books past what I've read, I just don't see how aging Ciri up isn't gonna be a drastic change. Also while watching a trailer reaction they stopped on a close up of Ciri multiple times and it doesn't look like they gave her green eyes. If they did they're way more subtle than I think they should be.

Ciri being aged up does worry me a little bit because I can't help but wonder how it could impact the show's ability to portray Geralt and Yen as father/mother figures to her if she's already well into her teens.

The games definitely elevated the book material. I read the books after putting in countless hours in TW3 (hit platinum on the PS4) and the way they described the characters in the books perfectly lined up with the games. Triss having the bright red hair is a slight deviation but I think it works perfectly for her.

I'm on the fence about this because the teaser hasnt done anything to give me hope, and I agree with the issues others have brought up (Dryads looking like they're from Wakanda, Ciri aged up, Triss looking awful, Nilfgaard scrotum armor, etc), but man do I wanna be wrong cause I was so stoked for this.

I just looked this up, because I thought she looked pretty young in the trailer. And well, she is almost 18. Holy ****. :funny:

Though this does explain the change in her story.

Yeah, I would have guessed she was more like 14. I guess we don't really know how old her character will be, though.

at first glance I liked the trailer but Triss is not working for me at all and I hope Netflix doesn't go cheap on this cause that monster at the end was no Bueno

but Geralt looks great a little odd he barely spoke in a trailer called the witcher and he's the witcher

Never played any of the games so don't have as many expectations but from that trailer I can't wait looks great so far.

Man I know about that they are adapting the books and not the game but I got introduced to this world via the games and me looking at it like yeah that looks like Geralt but the story will be all new to me and that has me excited [you should read the book] yeah I know so keep that negative crap to yourself lol

and watching the comic con interviews man the actress playing Yennefer is breathtaking but she looks like a child compared to Cavill and it didn't help that Cavill was hovering behind her in one interview looking creepy AF lolol

and Ciri looks like ok I'll take that instead of the leaked casting sheet which is good I guess?

Always think watching it first then reading the book is best. As long a you can avoid all the people spoiling it.
If you read first your minds eye will picture the character, voice mannerisms. But they probably wont match.

I look forward to Cavill's next role, in which he'll play the first ever mute version of Sherlock Holmes.

im sure its this year. netflix wouldnt release a trailer for something that premieres in 2020.
and when lauren says 'very soon', that really doesnt sound like next year to me.

On Netflix it still says new 2019 and you can watch the trailer on Netflix as well.
