Growing up and being influenced by a society doesn't mean one is relegated to simply what one see's on wall street or 47th street. It could mean what you see in the cultures movies or their story books, it's about their champions and their heroes. It means Captain America or capes like superman or king arthur cause it's synonymous with that culture. A coat like the terminator....I digress. It's all speculation at this point, we'll find out why they are dressed the way the are when the film drops.
Are you suggesting there will be some justification in the actual movie for them wearing these outfits?
I'd say that's highly unlikely and for the most part it wouldn't be necessary if their look was more subtle people would accept it in the same way that they accept them wearing the bandannas and pads.
I'm unsure what reasoning they could come up with to justify the ridiculous over the top get ups they have anyway.
The turtles walk around naked as do all animals, we've just been conditioned to look past it. These turtles seem to have human teeth...same the sense to cover their genitals. Like splinter, there's no reason not to cover their shame. Not like it takes anything away. Raph walking around newyork street with megan fox butt naked in a realistic live action film. I doubt we'll be seeing much more of that on hairless creatures post avatar. Like avatar it simply adds dignity imo.
Their genitals are covered up by their shells and plastrons.
Their "shame" is already covered up, their dignity is intact. I actually think there's an argument to made that the turtles really feel naked because their shells are like clothes.
The story had to be seen before the design could be properly analyzed and accepted by fans, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this.
I have a feeling fans liked it for reasons beyond how complicated it wasn't. But that's me.
Anyone with any basic knowledge of TMNT could look at that design and see the main plot of the story - it's Leonardo as a Foot Clan member.
The design says it all. Also it's very much the basic turtle design with a few Foot and Shredder-esque additions so I don't think anyone who is fine with the original look would have a problem with this.
If they'd given him lots of rags and spike and coming out of every joint than I'd imagine it would have been different and even then I think fans would be more accepting knowing this is an outfit he was forced to wear and temporary.
Unfortunately, I'm talking about the movie and animated
incarnations of which their hasn't been a fan outcry against. Fans shouldn't start now.
The first animated series and movies didn't have him in armor either.
That trend started with the 2k3 series and like I said more acceptable in the context of Shredder being the "big bad" and having a look that conveyed that. That being said I do personally think the look of the Shredder in this over the top.
Like I said, they make big and small changes at their discretion. For example all this talk of changing the race and origin of the villain. Really take a look at the villains(race wise) in the Batman and the recent ironman film...
It happens, people move on. Easy to cry fowl before hand.
But those are somewhat understandable.
An arab terrorist wasn't going to fly in a movie in this day and age.
An evil heartless villain from China (although not technically Chinese) called the Mandarin is equally dodgy territory even before taking into account the attempts to market that movie to China.
Although I think it should be said that while fans were more accepting of Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins they were less so with Iron Man 3's Mandarin and that's because they changed much more than his ethnicity.
In fact I'd say even the general audience was upset about that. I mean the movie hyped up this great villain with a great motif of drawing from multiple and just when you're looking forward to an epic battle with him...we get Sir Trev. Even the laughs that got doesn't compensate for the let down.
I'd say it's similar with this; Fichtner has as good as said Eric Sachs is an entirely new character to wear the armor and has nothing to do with Saki's story (
as it has been explained to him which to be fair doesn't seem accurate).
As for the Usagi characters, last I checked that was the turtles universe, the point was, clothes can and do make sense when we aren't biased against them. Better example would be the Blacksad comic.
Nope. Usagi Yojimbo is a seperate and longer running franchise. Their characters have crossed over with the turtles often because their creator and Peter Laird are good friends but they are separate universes.
The inhabit a world comparable to Earth in the 16th century but with anthropomorphic animals instead of humans. Usagi himself is based on Miyamoto Musashi so it their world it makes sense to wear clothes.
You correlating this stuff to a failed tv show is your prerogative. It would be like me saying: 'remember what happened the last time they made a live action turtle movie without clothes on? That's what happens when you do it that way...'
I'm not the only fan to draw that comparison. They are actually quite similar not only to the actual show versions but the toy versions which also inexplicably gave them pants
No matter what happens the cgi and how polished it is will be make or break with general audiences(I won't even get into fans anymore). I personally hope they pull a godzilla/TF1 and pull back revealing as much as possible..
I don't think anyone fan or not really doubts that the chi will be very good quality and the turtles will have more texture and look real in motion etc.
That wont make people who don't care for hulking turtles like the idea any more or those who think those clothes are way over the top think differently.
It isn't going to make the story of Eric Sachs any better or worse or if it's accurate the focus will be not on the titular characters but the human ones have it be met with less disdain.
I think you underestimating the general public to overlook these things if they special affects are great. Some movies have had the best fx of the time but still were unpopular with the public like the first two Star Wars prequels for example.
The CGI and overall vfx.
They wanted the Turtles perfect to show off.
I don't think that's even been officially stated. That's a just rationale a lot of defenders of this movie have decided is true.
That's no reason why they haven't released concept art or had Jonathan Leibesman hint tell us about tone or debunk these apparent misconceptions about the movie (other than alien issue after they rewrote it) or hint at characters and plot lines.
