New rule about use of term "racist" or "racism"...

I never quite understood it myself. I'm in a similar but somewhat different position and I was surprised after coming out last week that they claimed to have never noticed, despite the seemingly obvious hints I dropped.

Not everyone has "gaydar". I've met some very open and flamboyant gay people the last few years, and still needed to be hit over the head and flat out told that they were gay. When I say "I didn't know you were gay", they reply in total shock like "REALLY??!"

I had one gay friend tell me it's because I just don't care if someone is gay or not, so I don't even notice it. And there's probably some truth to that, because I really don't care. But except in certain instances, I simply can't tell if someone is gay, even if they are "obvious" about it.

Some people aren't flamboyant or embody gay stereotypes. And a lot of gay teens have girlfriends when they're still accepting their sexual identity. I don't think it's that hard to understand. In some cases when it's obvious, yes the parents are in denial. But in other cases I can understand it completely. And I know my parents don't know all my secrets, like the nasty adderall habit I've been trying to kick.

This is true too. I went to college with a guy who all through high school, and the first couple years of college, had a girlfriend and they were kind of the "it" couple of the department. Then they broke up, and I was like "Oh, that's sad!" Come to find out, he came out as being gay, and that was why they broke up.

I also knew a kid my last year of college who pretty much was in denial about being gay. His parents apparently wouldn't have approved, so he lied even to himself about it. Sad situation.

I can't imagine disowning or disapproving of your child's sexual lifestyle. If my future kids come out to me, the reply is just gonna be "Okay. Now let's eat dinner". My opinion of homosexuality aside, I just don't understand why people get so worked up about it. It's a personal lifestyle that effects nobody else except the people directly involved, and it's not a negative act in any way shape or form. Not a single person gets harmed by the act of homosexuality, so why it's so controversial I will never understand.

Someone not knowing they're gay is very different from parents not knowing.

Whole different kind of denial.

I imagine it bums fathers out more so than mothers, since we live in a patriarchal society, which despite all the homosexual undertones, is all about manliness. Plus, it effectively ends the male line.

I'm glad I was raised the way I was.

I have a cousin who recently had a sex change. My dad and I were talking about it, and obviously homosexuality came up. My dad told me "If you or your brother came out to me as being gay, it wouldn't be an issue to me. I wouldn't care if either of you turned out gay, I wouldn't think any different of either of you"

And I feel the same way about my own hypothetical children. I have my own views of homosexuality (which basically amounts to nothing more than I am a straight male, so I am attracted to females, so males being attracted to other males is something I don't "get" and has no appeal to me, but that's about the extent of it. I guess the worst thing I could say is that I would -prefer- my children be straight, but if they weren't, I'd love them no less and would think no lower of them), but it's not an issue that deserves the controversy it gets. It has no effect or impact on me, and not in a "I have black friends, I'm not racist!" kind of way, I have tons of gay friends and their homosexuality makes me think no different of them than I would my straight friends. Hell I've even kissed some of them.

People really need to just gtfo it.

And now, I've hijacked this into a gay thread. :wow::wow::wow:

I found out secondhand through my mother that my dad apparently told her recently that my being gay doesn't bother him anymore.

He says this to her, not me, and we still do that awkward dance where it's not directly discussed, but it's something, I guess...

That still sucks though.

It happens with people in all walks of life. I've have had falling out with people I used to be friends with then find out from another friend that they were asking about me. If you want to know how I am, then reach out and ask me yourself. It's easier to be a coward for some people.

Anyone who complained about Ledger playing Joker because of BB Mountain is straight up homophobic. No ifs, ands or buts. That's just insane and pathetic.

Man, I STILL hear about this. I have a few friends who are in denial about being homophobic. One of them is just very blatant but claims he's only against the act, not the person (based on his religion), but he's so homophobic it's not funny. And he STILL talks about how shocked he was that someone from Brokeback did such a good job playing the Joker. He was all about the movie being ruined due to a gay dude playing Joker ("Because, come on, if someone's willing to play a role like in Brokeback Mountain, they're obviously hiding something. I don't care what anyone says, those dudes are gay.")

But at least he's advanced of late to the point of having a list of the Top 5 coolest gay dudes.

Another friend is similar but not quite as blatant. I don't think he's genuinely against the people, but I think the church he's from is very adamant about homosexuality being a sin and you can tell that homosexuality just simply disgusts him. He's actually cool when it comes to the people, but any conversation or hinting at man loving a man just gets a grimace going for the guy.

I look at them and remember how I used to be just the same and it sickens me. I'm glad most of us have moved on from that church and found new ones. It was fairly venomous.

The sexism posts are very apparent in anything in regards to females on these boards. From "fat" Anne Hathaway, to Aunt May an Mary Jane fan wet dream, to Enchantress using Jane as sexual bait, to any actress appreciation thread to the hotties threads.

Most people turn a blind eye to it unless it gets in the really creepy category.
The Mary Jane thread was multiple pages of face palm for a while.

I agree with this. Depends on what character it is. I dont think its racist at all to want a character to look like they do in the comics. I wouldnt want a black captain america, or an Indian wolverine. :p

But there is a black Captain America. Now allow me to say a few things about this subject after seeing the fallout of a bi-racial spider man. And just the rumors of a man of color playing the Human torch. And this comes from someone who has seen racism first hand.

  1. These characters were created before there was even a thought of placing a person of color in even a comic book. Johnny has always been white because of the time. Nothing more nothing less.
  2. If changing a characters color will stop you from going to see a movie. It wouldn't bother me one bit.
  3. I don't believe that MOST people are saying these thing out of hatred as was stated in the opening post of this thread. Instead more from the uninformed or stupid side of the brain. But that is no excuse for some of the comments I have seen online in several places. If you don't want to come across a racist think before you type something that may come off as racist or insensitive. If you don't , do not become upset at the replies you receive.
  4. If you said some of these thing in front of Stan Lee. He would either turn green and go all Hulk on you. Or he would hit you over the head with a artist's table. You call yourself Marvel fans. But if you know anything about the man who created most of these characters you would know that a lot of these stories that involved X-Men, F4 and someone of the other comics had stories about people being different from the "rest of society". You claim to be a marvel fan then act like a marvel Fan! Racism was a big issue to him and he would try to teach readers about it in way he could get by censors and bigots.
  5. Now understand this. If you see a comment that seems off about a subject in a comic book movie or a thread on a forum. Do not just scream racism. Try to talk to that person. Try to make some points as to your side of the subject. See where they are coming from and try to help them see where you are coming from.

I am a Obama Supporter and this is how I try to deal with people who do not see my POV. I do not call them racist. I ask from fact, statements, and I offer the same. I just wish people that claim to love comic books and comic book movies would do the same

He would be a better fit for a Wonder Woman movie because who wants to typecast Wonder Woman as a hot white chick.
I see the reference was not caught. :oldrazz:

Watch Donald Glover's bit about the Spider-Man rumours.

It seems to me some people's interpretation of "racist comments" are way overly sensitive.

I wasn't in the thread from the beginning of the debate,so I didn't read every post, but from what I saw, most of the comments were like:

"I want the character to look like the way he did in the comic for the last 40 years"

"This is just PC/stunt/Trank playing favorites- casting"

"I wouldn't want a white actor playing (Black Panther,Luke Cage,Blade,etc)"

And some were acting like these were racist comments spouted by flaming racists. Clearly,if you think those comments are racist, you needed the "new rule" in place.

Agreed, and it seems much easier to throw these words around than to simply discuss the issue at hand.

I don't know Trank's reason for this possibility in casting, I'm sure we will hear from him soon enough.

Once again, as I have said before....if a post is looked upon as racist, homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, whatever the case may be then report it.

This was discussed heavily by the mods and admin and that was the decision that was made. I'm sure there are many that agree, as well as disagree...

But that is the rule as stated in the announcement, and it will be enforced.

To those asking if the rule encompasses all of the above? Yes....if needed we can certainly state that as well.

Report first...

Although I agree with the rest of what you said, tread softly with that little blurb at the top, Kelly. There are some bold implications behind that.

I totally stand behind it, we are on the internet its simple to do it, and all kinds of things are thrown around on both sides of this issue including all of the terms I stated above against actors, against posters, etc...No implications whatsoever, simply what I have experienced in my almost 9 years on this site.

The rule was made purely to protect the other side of the coin in an ugly argument that was spiraling because of a few big mouths. As far as the Cracked article goes, it was a PC laden agenda piece that does not concern the Hype, all that matters to us is what happens here between our posters

For as long as I can remember this site has punished racism and homophobia, nothing in the announcement changes that or "Takes a side." All it does is let those that throw around the slanderous term of racist because a poster doesn't want a race change for a character or indeed doesn't like the policies of a President who happens to be black, know that it's not gonna fly here.

Now this thread has just become an extension of the Gay rights thread and Human Torch thread so it's being closed.
