New rule about use of term "racist" or "racism"...

Yeah.... that color-coded Power Rangers thing seems really awkward and weird in retrospect.

lol you never notice it nor care as a child...but when you look back you go "really!?.....wow"

The yellow one was Asian too I remember, proving it wasn't just a coincidence. I think she's the one who died a few years ago.

Yep, she was straight up Asian. Saban was shameless and that man was Egyptian.

Honestly, stuff like Electro being black doesn't bother me, because his racial identity isn't important in the comics (His whole ID boils down to former electric linesman who got super-charged). But a black (or Asian or Hispanic or even red-headed) Peter Parker would bother me, because his civilian identity is so prolific and recognizable. Other things that would bother me: a white Luke Cage, an Australian Captain America, a catholic Ben Grimm, a Jewish Matt Murdock, a male Scarlet Witch. See... It's not about race. It's about being true to source material and backstory.

When you say Peter Parker's civilian identity is prolific and recognizable, do you mean within the context of the real world or the context of the Marvel Universe? Because I can see where you're coming from if you're talking about the former.

When you get right down to it, these arguments about whether a character can or should be played by an actor of a different race than the one they're portrayed as in the comic boil down to how popular the character is. Nobody complained when Fox (Wanted), Maria Hill (The Avengers), and Alicia Masters (Fantastic Four) had their races switched. Less of a fuss was made about Michael Clarke Duncan playing Kingpin in Daredevil or Jamie Foxx playing Electro in the upcoming Spider-Man movie.

But Human Torch and Spider-Man? They'll get everyone's dander up when it hasn't actually happened.

My opinion. Keep the major characters away from race change because at the end of the day, it will be considered unnecessary. But people who whine about Electro or even Kingpin...come on now. Even the biggest Electro fan has to admit. He's a B-lister.

Or how they decided to white up, Jessica Alba.

I agree with this. Depends on what character it is. I dont think its racist at all to want a character to look like they do in the comics. I wouldnt want a black captain america, or an Indian wolverine. :p

To answer the original poster question I think the mods just had enough of posters calling other posters racist in the Johnny Storm thread.

I don't know how much cleaning the mods did in there, but I suggest to anyone who hasn't seen that thread yet to go in there and read maybe five pages of it. It has some of the funniest and outright saddest posts I've seen on these forums in a while. Goodness gracious.

Maria Hill had her race switched from the comics to the movie? News to me, I thought she was white in both.

Which is quite sad considering the posts that drew that attention in the first place are very likely still there.

They are. Which is my problem in the whole mess. They'd rather silence people pointing out very unlikely to be intentional racism than the racism itself.

The issue is more the people being unintentionally racist and don't see it as such, and now, they see people making comments about how they merely want source accuracy and think "That's just like me!" while ignoring the fact that they said things that are just plain wrong in addition.

I think it's sad that the mods actually had to make a rule about this. Common sense and decensy people!

I think the term "homophobic" should be added to that list. Most people who don't agree with the lifestyle are not actually homophobic. It's just a way to force people to agree with you.

If you're making rules about racism, probably everything that's similar should be added. Homophobic, sexist, nudist, etc.

How often does homophobia and sexism come up in casting threads, though? I can't remember the last time I saw a poster complain that a gay actor couldn't play a superhero, or that a woman couldn't be one.

As for me, I have no problem with racebending as long as it's for secondary characters. Main characters who have an iconic look should be accurately represented in the movies.

I saw worst stuff in the Idris Elba heimdall and Samuel L.Jackson threads

I remember being around for those. Who really knew who Heimdall was anyway? As for Nick Fury, what killed me was that it's wasn't even race changing. There actually is a black Nick Fury.

This is like the MTV's Real World.

You're racist.

No, you're racist.

I don't see the problem with this rule. I think both opinions have validity to them. If you're unopposed/in favor of race changing I don't see how calling someone a racist with the opposite view is a necessary tool that you need.

There is a big difference between someone saying something that's actually racist and calling someone a racist. If they want to infract someone for trolling or foolhardily using the race card that's understandable, but those instances are just minor annoyances at best compared to someone saying something against another race. To lump them both together isn't the right call because it's still ignoring the problem of the racism that is going on.

I'm pretty sure racist posts are against the rules too.

It seems to me some people's interpretation of "racist comments" are way overly sensitive.

I wasn't in the thread from the beginning of the debate,so I didn't read every post, but from what I saw, most of the comments were like:

"I want the character to look like the way he did in the comic for the last 40 years"

"This is just PC/stunt/Trank playing favorites- casting"

"I wouldn't want a white actor playing (Black Panther,Luke Cage,Blade,etc)"

And some were acting like these were racist comments spouted by flaming racists. Clearly,if you think those comments are racist, you needed the "new rule" in place.
