Yeah.... that color-coded Power Rangers thing seems really awkward and weird in retrospect.
The yellow one was Asian too I remember, proving it wasn't just a coincidence. I think she's the one who died a few years ago.
Honestly, stuff like Electro being black doesn't bother me, because his racial identity isn't important in the comics (His whole ID boils down to former electric linesman who got super-charged). But a black (or Asian or Hispanic or even red-headed) Peter Parker would bother me, because his civilian identity is so prolific and recognizable. Other things that would bother me: a white Luke Cage, an Australian Captain America, a catholic Ben Grimm, a Jewish Matt Murdock, a male Scarlet Witch. See... It's not about race. It's about being true to source material and backstory.
I agree with this. Depends on what character it is. I dont think its racist at all to want a character to look like they do in the comics. I wouldnt want a black captain america, or an Indian wolverine. My opinion. Keep the major characters away from race change because at the end of the day, it will be considered unnecessary. But people who whine about Electro or even Kingpin...come on now. Even the biggest Electro fan has to admit. He's a B-lister.
When you get right down to it, these arguments about whether a character can or should be played by an actor of a different race than the one they're portrayed as in the comic boil down to how popular the character is. Nobody complained when Fox (Wanted), Maria Hill (The Avengers), and Alicia Masters (Fantastic Four) had their races switched. Less of a fuss was made about Michael Clarke Duncan playing Kingpin in Daredevil or Jamie Foxx playing Electro in the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
To answer the original poster question I think the mods just had enough of posters calling other posters racist in the Johnny Storm thread.
They are. Which is my problem in the whole mess. They'd rather silence people pointing out very unlikely to be intentional racism than the racism itself.Which is quite sad considering the posts that drew that attention in the first place are very likely still there.
If you're making rules about racism, probably everything that's similar should be added. Homophobic, sexist, nudist, etc.
I don't know how much cleaning the mods did in there, but I suggest to anyone who hasn't seen that thread yet to go in there and read maybe five pages of it. It has some of the funniest and outright saddest posts I've seen on these forums in a while. Goodness gracious.
I saw worst stuff in the Idris Elba heimdall and Samuel L.Jackson threads
This is like the MTV's Real World.
You're racist.
No, you're racist.
I don't see the problem with this rule. I think both opinions have validity to them. If you're unopposed/in favor of race changing I don't see how calling someone a racist with the opposite view is a necessary tool that you need.
There is a big difference between someone saying something that's actually racist and calling someone a racist. If they want to infract someone for trolling or foolhardily using the race card that's understandable, but those instances are just minor annoyances at best compared to someone saying something against another race. To lump them both together isn't the right call because it's still ignoring the problem of the racism that is going on.
