New series from Dan Slott!

I wish. But since no one else mentioned this I will tell you that Mark millar is doing an Alpha Flight post Civil War.
Really damn, as a Canadian I'd much rather have Dan Slott on it then Mark Millar. Assuming it'll even have anything to do with Canada post Civil War

Dread,

I agree with you on a lot of points.

For one Marvel also seems convinced they are dealing with a shrinking market and no one seems can convinced the "glory years" of the 90s in terms of sales , could ever be reached again.

Especially sad when you see a wall of manga and kids and teens reading them at your local bookstore that wasnt there 10 years ago.

I dont know why Marvel is so convinced on giving up on books after less than a year. Guess no one there thinks sometimes (especially a book they havnt hyped up themselves) word of mouth goes a long way.

I can think of alot of examples of this in the buissness word and that of art. I just bought the new AFI album (and it sucks) and that band pumped out almost 10 albums before it ever got any sort of sales.

THE X-FILES ended as a monster hit for FOX, even after one of its stars departed, but it took more than two seasons for that to happen. There are no end of examples.

I'm not sure the 90's boom can be repeated, but the slow, steady increase of the manga market towards the sorts of fans that DC and Marvel have tried, and failed, to reach for years seems to reveal something. To give credit, DC seems to have outright abandoned the "new fans" who never materialize and seems to gear itself towards servicing their diehards; Marvel does this mostly, too, but they also have one foot towards hoping for new fans.

That said, yeah, many books need time and support to find an audience. If they're given no support, time won't matter; MTU is still going, but it sells abysmally; of course, when was the last time you saw an advert for it? Even a mention in WIZARD? I know that some things fail regardless, but I just think Marvel needs to regroup, maybe trim down some of their line and such, and support the new books they launch. If that means limiting it to, say, one new book a month, so be it.

In keeping with the topic, my "Dan Slott Title Wish-List" is as follows:

1). A non-continuity Spider-Man book: anyone who's read SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH knows what I mean. By non-continuity, I mean a title that doesn't have to adhere to the CW/PRELUDE whatever, and just has back-to-basics Spidey. It's unlikely, and I'd prefer he got on a core title eventually, but I'm honest, this'd be my Slott Holy Grail.

2). New Warriors: I'd trust him to be able to balence the angst and the fun, the darkness and the light, as well as honest superheroism and adherance to the past. Heck, he did his homework on the team for SHE-HULK #8 as is. The team, despite losing 3 of their founders, is in a better position to be relaunched effectively now and after CW than they have in about 8 years. Who better than Slott? Plus, given their losses and the need at redeeming their name and honor, this may fit the intended "not as goofy" tone.

3). Champions: Probably the wiggiest roster in the MU, this is a team that has 2 founding X-Men, 2 Avengers, and Ghost Rider as a main cast. The team seems to scream Slott's style, but a "slightly more serious" take could help the team get more respect. Plus, they do have to mourn the death of Darkstar, one of their old teammates (she was axed off by Phantomex during Morrison's X-run).

4). Alpha Flight: a Team left decimated after the effects of THE COLLECTIVE, as well as a team that has never regained their hieght of popularity that they had during the 80's. Much like the X-Men, they got complicated, their cast got huge, and they tried to spin off, only UNLIKE the X-Men, they imploded and never recovered, and ever since have only been relaunched as "they're a team from Canada", as if that's really important. Its the characters and stories that need to click. Some may say this team could never work, but then again, some may have said a SHE-HULK book could never be relaunched, either. And it has. Could Slott work some magic here?

5). The Thing: Saved from the axe, the book is relaunched with a new, vigorous push with more adventures of the ever-lovin' blue eyed pug from Yancy Street. What? This IS a wish-list after all? Okay, fine, how about EXCELSIOR, the spin-off team of B-Listers created by BKV for RUNAWAYS? Aside for Vaughan or Kirkman, Slott's the only guy I'd trust with that team.

Well I guess this is good for Slott fans. I'll at least try out this new series by him no matter what it is maybe this time I will like it.

I'd say that Slott's pitch would probably be either new warriors or Alpha flight.

And factoring in Slott's recent use of NEW WARRIORS in she Hulk (which i completley forgot about)

I'd say New Warriors is the front runner.

I just ask 1 thing...please dont use rage in his original costume and instead use his metal faced costume...

Awwwwwwww....f**k no. Millar is going to use that book to be nothing more than America Is Always Evil the Series vol. 2 :o

The fact that Thing #8 has the GLA take the name "Great Lakes Champions"...
makes me wonder if Slott wasn't dropping a hint that a team book for The Champions might be underway.

After all
the GLA gang just can't be that lucky to actually get a name all to themselves.:)

And my two favorite writers in Marvel right now are Brubaker and Slott... so if I can enjoy a grim and gritty Captain America I can sure enjoy whatever darker work Slott will be doing... assuming I can get into the characters. :)

I agree; yellow masks just aren't scary. Wolverine has one because of notalgia, but they're not. Of course, Rage's metallic costume one could argue could be a clear example of "overly complicated, 90's shoulderpad armor", but its a look that has stuck for him. Honestly, Justice is the New Warrior who needs a revamped look the most; he always looks so generic. Even Rage isn't generic.

I forgot to mention GLA (or is it GLC now) would be another great ongoing title I'd buy in a heartbeat. I doubt it is, but it is a "wish list". Mr. Immortal was literally my "hero of 2005" because Slott wrote him so well. Behind all the cheese was a guy who'd had a tormented life where he's lost everyone he ever cared about, and is actually destined to outlive everyone just to see the next universe, and yet he still puts on spandex and tries to save the world. That's hardcore.

Very true. The aftermath of CW will leave some scorched earth in its wake that some new launches may rise from. The Champions certainly have a wiggy line-up that Slott may have fun with. Archangel, Iceman, Black Widow, Hercules, and Ghost Rider? Plus Bill "Goliath" Foster as an "associate"? Why not? After all, Herc and Foster've shown up in THE THING previously, too.

I was thinking what if Dan Slott's new series is about SHEILD. By the end of Civil War Nick Fury could be the Leader of SHEILD again, and it would be a little bit darker of a series then Dan Slott has done at Marvel so far.

Its a shame that The Thing had to be cancelled.

I hope for better luck for his next series.

I hope Slott working on another book doesn't affect She-Hulk. He really makes that book work, in the wrong hands it could end up being Sensational She-Hulk again.

The problem is todays books are too dumbed down, they are trying to catch the mainstream audience rather than what was always their target market...people who don't fit

Take for example the goblin

The original goblin was a guy with super-strength in a suit, but the horror of the goblin was all internal. It was a man who's psyche had been twisted into something so grotesque it passed beyond human recognition.

What do we get now; a big green demon looking thing. Now for me a man that can do what osborne has done but whom without his mask you couldn't tell from adam, that's scary. They used to say the thing that freaked people out about dahmer was on the outside he was just like you or me, he wasn't some tatooed goth freak, he was the guy that worked down your local record store etc. They need to return to comics as metaphor/intelectual discourse. That's how they'll get new fans.

I read comics for escapism from a moderately mundane life (or at least a life that doesn't/didn't live up to my expectations), if I was the captain of my schools football team I would probably not have given two ****s about comic book

The best way to sum it up I think is to say that todays "kid friendly" books seem to be aimed at flash when your target market should be peter

and finally: WHEN YOU GET A GREAT BOOK LIKE SPIDER-GIRL FOR ****S SAKE PUBLICISE IT!!!

ok I'm done

However becuase he's very good with the humorous side of things slott could be just the thing to bring in younger fans. I mean I showed thing #8 to my ten yr old nephew and he loved it, new nothing of the characters, never read a comic before but he plagued me with questions about it for half an hour afterwards non-stop. I'm getting him an ultimate fantastic four subscription for his birthday (loved the thing!) so chalk up one new reader for marvel...the rest is up to you joey q

Slott can probably handle two ongoings at once. He was able to write SHE-HULK and THE THING side by side for 8 issues and not miss a beat (and throw in a WESTERN SPECIAL or two in-between).

Give him a GLC ongoing ,seriously I've just got GLA missasembled but I had a stack of comics to get through so I've only read the first issue, looks great so far.

Robert Kirkman writes like 8 ongoing titles, im sure Slott could handle 2.

To be fair, writing 8 ongoings some could say has not done him well in terms of quality. I like Kirkman, but MTU and Ult. XM have started to skid a little.

But I agree on the point; I'm sure Slott will be fine with more than one ongoing. He's written 2 before, plus some added specials in-between.

Yeah but look at his other titles he writes well Invincible, Walking Dead, those havent lost any of its quality
