Sequels NEWS!! Will We Get to See a Spider-Man 4? (USA TODAY Article)

I wouldn't be surprised if they made a fourth Spiderman movie. I also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Maguire is quoted in the article as saying
"We've done an amazing job at keeping things fresh," Maguire tells USA TODAY. But, he adds, "it's hard to imagine continuously coming up with stories that deserve to be told. I'm not sure if there are more stories for this character that are interesting enough to be excited about doing more."

I take that to mean if Sony and Raimi came up with a really cool and original story, he "might" consider it. He's probably thinking that there's nothing else left to do with the character. As comic book fans we know better. If I'm not mistaken Tobey hasn't read much beyond issue 50 or so. I remember him making a statement before the first film that he wasn't even familiar with the character of Joe Robertson b/c he wasn't in any of the stories he read. Stan Lee and John Romita didn't introduce Robbie until the mid 50's or early 60's. Tobey's knowledge Spiderman's comic book history appears to be pretty limited.

Maguire:"This one, to me, has more interesting twists and turns" than the first two, he says. "It's been a fun ride."

I have no doubt that this will be a good film. Maguire seems really excited about it. But, am I the only one who remembers him saying that he didn't think Sony would be able to top Spiderman 2?

I think in his case it really depends on the STORY. Not just the hero vs. villian angle, but also the story arc with Peter. Sony could put together another movie with any of Spidey's numerous villians and make some money. But, Maguire takes his acting seriously. You can tell that by the roles he's played in the past. If he isn't artistically challenged by the part (or any part) he's not going to do it. If a fourth story was pitched and had an original/compelling story arc for Peter and Spiderman I could see him getting excited enough to do a fourth film. Besides, he won't make nearly $20 million for any other role.

But Spider-Man producers concede they haven't looked beyond this installment of the series, which they always viewed as a trilogy.

"We don't have a book we're adapting, like a Lord of the Rings," says Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin. "It's open-ended. But this could be the last. We've never started on the next movie while we were working on the current one."

I'm actually not bothered by that statement. I applaud Sony for allowing Raimi to map out a beginning, middle, and end for the Spiderman trilogy. There is nothing wrong with waiting until one movie is done before conceiving a concept for the next one. And, it makes sense to see how well a movie is received commercially at the box office and with fans before the next film is greenlighted.

I hate to close with the following cliche, but in this case it fits : "We'll just have to wait and see what happens".

{note}

This post may sound familiar to some of you. A similiar topic was started over on the sequels forum and I orignally replied over there. But, since all of the action seems to be over here (the sequels board is dead this morning) I decided to move my post. :)

well, it's seems that won't be a fourth movie with tobey. It sucks.

Until May 4 , 2007 We don't know Official if their be a Spidey 4 movie .

I still don't believe they'll stop at three. Just because Tobey thinks it's run out of good stories doesn't mean Sony do.

Though it does look like Venom get's his 15 minutes of fame [literally] in this one.

As for the "fourth villain", well no surprise that it's evil Spider-Man.

So the fourth villain is himself. Some people thought that might be the case.

this picture is totally real

USAtoday uses it with the article
http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-07-20-spiderman_x.htm

why would USAtoday been given something fake?

Nothing really shocking in that article. Those people are professionals. They know what to say to get the fans talking. SM3 is still 10 months away and they know the fans are foaming at the mouth to know whats really in the movie. Their ultra secretive approach to #3 has the anticipation level way up there. Then they say they're not sure if there's gonna be a SM4. ComiCon a couple of days later bumps the anticipation up a few more notches. Then we wait. The movie comes out and just about everyone (except the haters) will be blown away, all but demanding another sequel. The money factor isn't really an issue because SM3 will make its money, the franchise has a proven track record.

And on a lighter note, I find it amusing to see so many people saying they knew all along that Spidey was the fourth villain. If I had the time, I'm sure I could find proof that would show otherwise.

i knew it was real... but they have been lazy.. he obv was NOT wearing tht costume in tht picture... u can tell by the neckline:spidey:

naa toby will do more, alot of $$$ can persuade ppl to do anything.

toby will deff do a spidey 4

if spidey himself is the fourth villian, thats........GREAT! more time to devolp the already awesome villians they have! Sandman needs a lot of screen time! Venom not so much i think.

Since when did the actors call the shots if a movie will have another sequel. It's not up to Tobey, the only thing he can decide is if he wants to come back.

Agreed.

Also; Tobey might not find it so "hard to imagine them coming up with interesting stories to adapt" if he read a few comics.

There are a WEALTH of excellent storylines from the last forty plus years worth adapting to the silver screen.

It does, in a way.

However, if the James Bond franchise can survive losing Connery, and the Star Trek franchise can survive a whole new cast of characters, then i think the Spidey franchise has a good shot at surviving without Tobey.

Raimi wants to do SM4. So if Tobey would come back, Kirsten would also and we're all set. This starts out the same way as the cited article, but keep reading.

"We've done an amazing job at keeping things fresh," Maguire told USA Today. But, he adds, "it's hard to imagine continuously coming up with stories that deserve to be told. I'm not sure if there are more stories for this character that are interesting enough to be excited about doing more."

Both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 rank among the highest-grossing films of all time. The total worldwide box office of the two films alone is over $1.6 billion. So it would be hard to believe that a Hollywood studio would pass up the chance to make even more money.

J.K. Simmons, who plays Peter Parker's boss Johan Jameson, says that talk of a fourth movie has already begun.

"Yeah, it got mentioned. In fact, the last couple of days I shot was at the very end of the schedule — we were doing some night-action scenes in New York — and [director] Sam [Raimi] was talking about it," Simmons told TV Guide. "It's not a done deal because everybody's deals, including Sam Raimi's and all the actors', were for three pictures. But he's certainly open to doing more."

Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the series, was only contracted to do three Spider-Man movies. Dunst told ABC last year that she would only return for a fourth film if everyone returned.

"Unless they pay me exorbitant amounts of money," she said, laughing. "I mean, if everyone came back, then probably. I doubt (they'd all come back), but I don't know, maybe everyone would. I would ... I would if everyone came back and if there was a story to tell.""That's why I did the first one."

And if series helmer Sam Raimi has always said he'd be up for more.

"I never know if they're going to want me for another one," Raimi told Costco Connection. "But if the studio did make a part four, and if they'd ask me, I'd be thrilled to do it."

And if Raimi doesn't return, Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) has publicly commented on his desire to direct the fourth film: "It's hard work to find people who will wave the flag with you. However — Spider-Man 4? I'm available!"

Meanwhile, Hasbro sent out a press release in January that included talk of a fourth film.

Sorry cmill216

Don't know how I missed it because I did do some checking before I posted.

Well I predicted this. I expect a fourth film next decade but they'll sit on it a while because they don't want to rush out another Spidey film in 2-3 years with a different actor. That leads to public backlash.

This is the end of the Raimi films but maybe in 10 years we'll get a new Spidey trilogy then.

Doesn't Tobey want to be part of a saga, not every actor gets that chance,it's very rare.Any actor nowadays can be in a trilogy.Come on Tobey, think about it.

If this movie takes back the record from POTC2 do you honestly think that Sony will just stop making them???

^^Sony wont want to lol, the problem will just be finding a new director and cast etc that can really 'do' it well

Let the fourth movie go... what could possibly top this one as a finally??? Carnage??? Lizard??? Lizard and Carnage??? (like that plot works).... Lizard/Kraven won't be good enough to bring em back... the should've put like an option in their contracts and saved Venom... but they played it safe... I really don't mind...
