Next Big Cosmic Event:The Thanos Imperative

Wow. The last three pages of that preview are f***ing awesome. I wish the Surfer would display more of his personality than just "I am merely a herald" these days, but I'm still glad he and Galactus and the other cosmic heavies are involved this time around.

How real is the s**t about to get?

Pretty real.

Yeah, now I really need to get that second issue, so I can continue to wait for issue 3.

Pretty real.

 Now THAT'S a team!! That's the sexiest pic I've seen in a while. Must. Get. Issue. 3!!!

This is Marvels Galaxy Expendables. :woot::o (sorry, I couldn't resist)

I'm loving this event, it's like each issue just gets amped up more and more with awesomeness.

That picture is awesome. The Galaxies most powerful heroes right there yo! :D

What WAS Silver Surfer's personality when he wasn't a herald? As much as I think that move is backwards, I thought it was done because the 30-40 years he spent alone had set him in a rut. Surfer surfed alone. He sought peace and acceptance and redemption. More often than not he merely made stoic faces and rambled long, philosophically useless monologues while blasting at a target with energy beams. I never got the impression that Silver Surfer ever had much of a personality. His whole schtick was being emotionless and introspective, and to assume guilt for his days as Galactus. The sort of hero who might break down in dry sobs at roadkill, while at another point standing in the middle of a supernova and wax philosophical about some abstract thing that means nothing to anyone but Hamlet lovers. I suppose being Zen (with fits of hysteria) may have been a personality, but I always found him boring.

Now, I agree that Surfer being nothing but "janitor to the apocalypse" again with Galactus doesn't count as much of a personality either, but right now I see it as, personality wise, trading zero for zero. He says stuff that is exposition, and stuff that displays his experience of heady cosmic stuff, and he zaps stuff. And that's fine if he's not the star, which he isn't.

This week's issue was awesome, and that cover image for THANOS IMPERATIVE #3 is, as the kids say these days, "full of win". Yeah, Beta Ray Bill is totally there out of nowhere after having not popped up in a space book for at least a year, but no matter.

**** reasons, it's Beta Ray Bill!

Yeah, it's a big cosmic event and I could argue the stakes are about as high as they were for the original ANNIHILATION, when Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave sought to invade the "positive matter" universe and destroy everything. Sure, Ultron wanted to assimilate the universe, but that was part of his usual far reaching quest to eventually kill the Avengers. And WAR OF KINGS was an epic war between two kingdoms; in some ways a rehash of Kree/Shi'ar conflicts of the 90's, only handled much better.

But this? This is a full on Cancerverse invasion to make this universe like theirs by taking away the ability to die. They also spread around their own "cancer" pretty easily, and as their universe is clogged, this one seems like prime real estate. Every single space character from Jack Flag to Galactus cares about that. So, yeah, bring on Beta Ray Bill! Hell, dust off the Starjammers, have Havok blast something. Call in everyone! It's the big one!

Great series thus far! But what is the Galactus Engine? I have seen it somewhere but can't find it for the life of me!! :argh: It's not even on freakin Wikipedia!

The Galactus Engine is an immense device that harnesses and harvests Galactus' powers for various reasons. The first one was used by The Nu-Defenders to bring their Earth's 8 Billion inhabitants back through time. The second one is The Cancerverse's ultimate weapon against the Cosmic Abstracts of The Marvel Universe.

^Not familiar with it at all, but this is what popped up in a google search. Seems scary as hell though, it makes Galactus himself seem like a gnat.

Oh and I thought [BLACKOUT]Aegis and Tenebrous were destroyed. They are clearly standing with Galactus when confronting the cancerverse. [/BLACKOUT] Enjoying the series but I need to know what happened! :cmad:

A Galactus engine is Galactus as an engine. Duh. To be fair, while the "New Defenders" from the year 2500 from Mark Millar's FF run (the "Nu-Earth" debut run) had one, Annihilus tried to use Galactus as fuel for one of his big engines during the ANNIHILATION WAR. It didn't go well; eventually Silver Surfer (with assistance from Moondragon, Thanos, and Drax, sort of) managed to free Galactus, and he was mighty pissed. Frankly, while the 616 Galactus may be almost unstoppable, alternate reality versions of him keep getting wasted left and right.

You're right, but then again, beings of that high power level can usually come back from death whenever they please. The duo are "Proemial Gods", and even Earth gods (or Eternals) are damn near impossible to permanently kill. The forces of Death and Oblivion, recall, were able to bring Moondragon back to life, as well as coerce Phyla Mar-Vell into being their avatar; when that failed, they organized Thanos' return. Maelstrom has been dead for quite some time, and he's still popping around, serving them. So if said forces wanted Galactus to have a little back-up, that could've been arranged. But this is all No-Prize theory here.

Why isn't Kl'rt in this ? The last we saw of him was in Secret Invasion. You'd think he'd be involved in this , but I guess not.:csad::cmad:

He kind of had a personality. Maybe my perception is skewed because one of my best memories of old Silver Surfer comics is one where the Impossible Man shows up. The Surfer was just a straight man to Impy in that, but it at least showed a sense of humor could somehow be applied to him without the sky falling. I don't know if he'll ever be at his best again, but it would at least be nice to have him do something more personal than simply acting as a mouthpiece for Galactus all the time. Hell, Stardust is even more fanatically devoted to Galactus, yet it still has more personality in its gender-ambiguous finger than the Surfer does in his whole body. :o

And yeah, I'm gonna agree with NDX; f*** reasons, Bill is always welcome. Plus, he has been operating in space--read The Green of Eden and Godhunter. He's been stuck hovering around Earth's vicinity since then because of his deal with Agent Brand, but he's still been in space to some extent or another since his return in Secret Invasion: Thor.

Oh, that's true. Super-Skrull's been absent from the cosmic line for so long that I didn't even notice he was missing here. I wonder why they haven't brought him back... I would guess that it's because he's not really a hero, per se, but then again, neither is Ronan or, arguably, Gladiator.

How big of a role did Bill have in the Sif oneshot? I know he and his new girl was in it but I don't know the extent.

Not much. He basically just gives Sif the mission (which was supposed to go to Thor), shares an awkward moment with his sexy new Korbinite chick and Sif, and talks her through what she's supposed to be doing from Skuttlebutt. So he really only appears for like 3 pages.

I never had any nostalgic moments with Silver Surfer. I once found a great poster of his in the lobby of my apartment building that still hangs in my room, but if terrific artwork made a character great by itself, then Ghost Rider is the best character of the last 35 years. His cartoon from 1998 was god-awfully boring. I've never cared for him at all.

I know Beta Ray Bill has been in space in the past, but he did return to earth for SECRET INVASION: THOR. But he hasn't really been seen since, so by all means let's add him to the major space event. Who knows, it might get some Thor fans to buy it, and present a sales uptick.

I do agree it would have been interesting had Super-Skrull continued on his trend of being morally ambiguous instead of a standard FF punching bag. I don't miss, but he's had his moments. That said, it may be because some writers are as tired of Skrulls after SECRET INVASION as readers are.

I just mentioned several instances where Bill was seen--in space, no less--since Secret Invasion: Thor. Damned good ones, too. :o

Fair enough. I don't have a problem with it. Beta Ray Bill's fine. I just don't set myself on fire and run naked through the streets in rapture for him like many fans do. To me, if you can't get Thor to show up, you could always get Bill; he's the horse faced cover band for Thor. But that's fine. He's got a cosmic alien origin and still does space alien stuff, so by all means let's include him in the biggest space war since ANNIHILATION alongside heavy hitters like Nova, Quasar, and Silver Surfer. He fits in well with them.

I probably like Bill more than Silver Surfer. He's at least got a personality regardless of whether he is a herald or not. :o

The Surfer could have one if someone just tried using him as a character again instead of just a plot device. It's so disappointing.
