Are they trying to use this as some kind of political slam? I'm sure my grandmother's father, who was white, also had slaves. Her mother was probably one of them. Most of them back in that time had slaves obviously.

Actually most people in the South did NOT own slaves, it was only the rich and large plantation workers mainly.

It was common for prominent southern families to own slaves in the formative years of the USA.
It wasn't seen as immoral. Justification for it was found in the bible.
For all we know, his family treated his slave well.
