Coming in May, DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave” will literally expand the world-building efforts of the comprehensive publishing initiative. With the addition of a parallel Earth that features prominently into both EARTH 2 and WORLDS’ FINEST, the developing narrative will encompass new heroes from distinctly different backgrounds, building on the shared universe in some surprising ways.

“Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. EARTH 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.”

Here’s a first look at the Batman of EARTH 2, designed by Jim Lee.

So it's a Wayne, could it be Damian? Still hoping it's Dick, but a murderous Batman makes me think Earth-2 stands for extremeeeee. :p

Skimmed through the newest Batman: The Dark Knight issue in the store today. My buddy behind the counter was trying not to laugh at the look of confusion mixed with anger on my face as I flipped through the pages of the Bane fight.

I dunno.

Killer's okay. Murderer is a different story.

I'm not keen on the sound of it personally

Still going to check out Earth 2 though :)

you mean how it's basically the exact same as the regular Batman mask? yeah, it's terrible.

If it's like 30s pulp Batman, no problem. If not, Im skeptical, but I'll give it a shot.

I hope Hugo Strange and his monster men get some love if it is based on the old golden age Batman stories

If it's Damian then they've turned Helena Wayne into Bruce's granddaughter rather than daughter

Earth-2 Robin design:

“Helena Wayne has been taught how to be the perfect Robin,” said James Robinson, writer of EARTH 2. “Assured as a detective, fighter, scientist, pilot and all around crime-fighter she’s been groomed by Batman to be the perfect caped manhunter (or should we say manHuntress) when she grows up.”

“Before coming to the main DCU Earth and taking up the mantle of Huntress, Helena Wayne fought crime alongside her father as the Robin to his Batman on Earth-2!” said WORLDS’ FINEST editor Wil Moss. “But how did she come to be on this Earth? And why did she decide to become Huntress? You’ll get some clues in next week’s HUNTRESS #6, but for the real scoop, pick up WORLDS’ FINEST #1!”

Earth-2 is looking less and less interesting to me. I doubt I'll bother picking up any of the series featuring it. So long, JSA. You were the only reason I even considered buying Earth-2 stuff. :csad:

I... I want to give it a shot, but everything about it so far has left me feeling "meh" to the extreme.

oh, james robinson is writing this? never mind then, i'll pass.

Say what you will about Robinson, but he seems to be able to write Earth-2 type characters, e.g., The Shade, very well.

Well, I'm still kind of interested in Earth-2. Not really what I was expecting, however. The idea of a more ruthless, extreme Batman is somewhat of a turn off, if not a little redundant given how angsty and violent the new 52 is already. Still, I'll probably pick up the first issue at the very least.

Yeah, it seems like every time we get to see an alternate Batman, he's a killing machine. Why don't we ever get to see a happy Batman?

I just don't understand the mindset behind it. They're bringing Earth-2 back, but they're turning it into the polar opposite of what it used to be.

I don't see what there is not to get. Their aim is not the reader base that wants to read about WWII heroes obviously. It's not a big enough fanbase for them anymore look at the mess that was the last volume of JSA.

They're going for what today's comic readers like and bringing back the multiverse in that vein because that's the storytelling and visual aesthetic that makes more money. They're in the business of selling comics; not pleasing the fanbase.

We just get lucky enough to get some quality **** from them amongst all the hackneyed stuff every month. That's been the way the big 2 have really operated for the past 30 years or so.
